Because Elrond was much older. The elves were losing their power and becoming mortal, hence their journeys to the Grey Havens to go over the sea to a land that was their actual home where they could be immortal.

She is Half Elven and was given the choice to choose to be human or elf kind. Elrond had the same choice and choose to be an Elf, his brother Elros choose to be a mortal man and founded the Numenoreans. Aragorn is a direct decedent of Isildur the last of the Numenorean kings and is directly decedent from Elrond's brother Elros.
