Let's get a thread going for general horror movie discussion as the month chugs along. What has everyone watched so far? What are your childhood favorites? Best scenes? Best final grills?
>>
I finally watched Blair Witch Project last night.
I can't imagine watching it on a theater given the way it's presented. I don't think it would feel authentic enough.
Anyway it was fun.
>>
I haven't watch a lot of horror movies this month because of work and school, but I have gotten to Suspiria, which was great.
>dat atmosphere
>dat cinematography

I'm going to watch Eden Lake tonight.
>>
favorite childhood movie
>The Mist

>last scene is amazing tbh
>>
>>61702641
I think I was 15 when it came out. Saw it in the theater and it was pretty unsettling, at least that build up to the very end got me spooped. I was so used to slashers up to that point, and Blair Witch had more of a visceral terror-inducing element to it.

I watched it again a few months ago and it does almost nothing for me. Watch the sequel, it's actually not that bad. It's weird because it's so much different, and the scenes are disjointed in that it keeps cutting between at least two different timelines of events with the same characters. Worth at least one watch though, but nothing great.
>>
recommend me a great 60's 70 horror guys. Already watch Rosemary's Baby, Texas Chainsaw, Halloween, Don't Look Now.
>>
>>61702703
One of the few times I preferred a movies ending to the books.
>>
>>61702677
>Eden Lake
Goddamn did this movie piss me off. I'm sure that was its aim, but fuck.

I made an effort this year to watch as many horror movies as possible. Last October was too busy, so I'm making up for it. Last week was "zombies and hordes" week, this one is pretty much "ghosts and creatures". Fridays are F13 nights.
>>
>>61702806
Black Christmas
Dawn of the Dead
The Omen
Suspiria
>>
I find that the newer a film is the less I find the special effects (especially in death scenes) believable.
>>
I don't know one good horror movie past 2000 really. Lost all hope

It's sad that we have to call Conjuring, It Follows or The Visit "decent" just because we are used to total pile of shits nowadays
>>
>>61702806
The Innocents
>>
>>61702850
yeah, stephen king also once said he wish he had written the book ending like the film
>>
>>61702725
The sequel is a fine example of a homicide by studio
>>
>>61702914
They had fewer tools to use for death scenes and other effects in the 80s and even up to the mid-90s so they actually gave a fuck about filming the scene to be as believable as possible. Now they just shoot the scene and worry about the CGI later. If they do use practical effects in addition to CGI, they're not disciplined enough with it to know how to wield it on camera in a believable way.

Some movies (the Evil Dead remake comes to mind) jumps head first into practical and pulls it off pretty nicely, but those horror movies are few and far between these days.

>>61702937
I agree. I was pretty let down by It Follows and was pretty surprised to see all the praise heaped on it. This generation is going to look back on their horror movies pretty shittily and that sucks for them.

My dorm mates made me watch this crap recently. I'm usually kind of a pussy when it comes to horror, but I don't think I've ever been so bored during a "horror" movie ever. At least we got a few sensible chuckles out of it.

Prince of Darkness would be in the Carpenter top tier if it had a halfway decent creature design.

We had a decent thread last night so I'll ask again here

Any sci-fi horror with more of an emphasis on atmosphere than jump scares/gore?

>Top tier films that fit this criteria
Alien(s)
Event Horizon
Altered States
>>
>>61704169
If Hardware had a better second half and was a lot less awkward, it might fit into this category. The world building in that is on point. There's definitely an atmosphere, but it's not explicitly scifi horror, more shlocky than anything.

I'm curious too, because I enjoy Event Horizon despite the stupider parts, and Dead Space was a halfway decent attempt at creating that same kind of atmosphere, but that wasn't a movie.

Who /Val Lewton/ here?
>>
I generally don't like horror movies, but I like the idea behind It Follows. I'm pretty sure there was a YouTube video mocking it about a guy following another guy with a spoon for all eternity, but the video was before the movie, so idk how that works.
How "scary" is it follows? Does it have jump scares and like creepy faces and brutal human dissection scenes? Or is it more like the general atmosphere is creepy? I like those kinds of movies but I hate the cheap jumpscares and shit
>>
>>61704220
As someone who unabashedly loves Event Horizon (despite, as you put so well, the stupider parts) I'd recommend Sunshine

Does have many of the flaws of EH and in many ways it's a bit of a knock off but if you want more "Shining in Space" then I'd highly recommend it
>>
>>61704261
>general atmosphere is creepy

This kind. Very few if any jump scares
>>

Can we please be nice to each other in the one of four threads that's actually about discussing film and television on this board?
>>
>>61704350
Go die in a ditch
>>
>>61704261
The idea was what appealed to me and got me excited for it after seeing the trailer back in January. The execution, however, is pretty disappointing. A lot of unnecessary implicating in the narrative when conventional exposition would've worked much better, lots of boring moments that don't build character or give anyone on screen anything interesting to do, not enough watching-over-your-shoulder-amidst-lots-of-people type moments to create solid tension throughout.

It's definitely worth a watch, but don't go in looking for the second coming of Carpenter like so many people painted it as. Awesome soundtrack though.
>>
>>61704370

;)
>>
>>61704261
Not very scary at all, and the third act it really stifles what top tier first half had going for it. Like when I started seeing some effects I can do in after effects I was taken out of it a bit. Light 8/10 imo.

I'm the opposite, don't believe in ghosts, never did, never will, and the few people I've known with "real" ghost stories were completely retarded drug addicts. So ghost stories don't do anything for me unless they're really really good.

That said, I hated PA. Lots of nothing happening punctuated with 13spoopy666me. Woman in Black was alright for what it was, but not really that terrifying.
>>
>>61705572
It's the fear of the unknown for me, the fact that 'something' could be in your presence, your on your own in a house and something presents its self to you, you would fucking shit yourself. I would rather fight off a burglar then see a ghost in my house.

Is there a horror where the main character is just fed up with all the paranormal bullshit? Not in a modern "wacky" way. Subversion of the genre if you will.

I only noticed it when I re-watched it a couple of years ago. I was so freaked out I gave up on the movie. I find it most disturbing that I must've blinked or looked away every single time I watched that movie, in that exact scene, in that exact moment.

It still creeps me out.

I don't remember it very well, but is this that movie where a chick is filming a basement, then she turns the camera only to see a creature standing far away on the display, and when she looks up there is nothing? Then suddently the creature is up on her face and from them all we hear is the other characters hearing her screams, then later finding out a massive blood trail that leads up into the celling.

I can never remember if that scene was from the first Grave Encounters or the House on Haunted Hill remake.

>>61708425
yeah I agree it declined at that point but overall it was still really creepy. I would've liked it more had it actually been a monster/ghost than just a metaphor for the mom's insanity/breakdown

I actually thought Oculus was scary as fuck during the flashback scenes. Especially the all the parts about the parents losing their minds, like the mom just staring into the mirror blankly while vacuuming

The present-day scenes were retarded though.

Horror movies stop being interesting when the antagonist/monster/demon/whatever is God-mode and can just do anything it wants. There was literally 0 way for the main cast to win. It would've been so much better if the mirror was almost all powerful, but made occasional mistakes that they could exploit.

You must not have been watching many horror movies over the past 15 years, then. Or you're just ridiculously jaded. I'm a huge horror buff, have seen all the big films in the genre's history and have really enjoyed what has been put out this century so far. There's always been a ton of shitty horror movies, nothing's changed in that regard. Likewise, there have always been great ones too. There's never been a year where I've failed to find good/great new flicks.
>>
>>61709299
I don't think 2 was as good as 1, but it had it's moments. The part where he has his hand behind his back is probably one of the creepiest moments in the trilogy.

3 wasn't bad, it just wasn't really scary. At all. What few spooks they had were spoiled in the trailers.

Violent action movies disturbed me more than horror when I was a child.

I guess it was because it was more realistic.

Commando and Gloria to name two. Of course, both involved children in peril and violence against family members.

The bus hanging off the bridge in Superman...

You're being such a drama queen. There's been much worse CGI. The movie you're thinking of is 13 Sins / 13 Beloved btw. 13 Sins (American remake) was actually a lot better. Anyone who thinks otherwise is only saying so because 13 Beloved is foreign and you faggots will jerk off to anything that is foreign in an attempt to make yourself seem smart. 13 Beloved was bretty shit, especially that fucking ending.
