What's the appeal of the Western genre? What can one expect from it? What movies are recommended to first get into it?

My favorite western is The Outlaw Josey Wales.

Western genre is just the American equivalent of the samurai genre.

The Baron of Arizona, Day of the Outlaw, A Bullet for the General, My Darling Clementine, Wagon Master, Red River, Stagecoach, The Proposition, Heaven's Gate, Stars in my Crown, Lonesome Dove and Django.

The appeal of the western genre is watching white men do bad things, but for some reason we congratulate them, contrary to popular belief Cowboys were rarely white, most were former slaves looking for work, but the movies won't tell you that.

"Western" isn't really a genre, or at least not a very descriptive one, as it doesn't denote anything except setting.

For example, Ford and Leone have nothing to do with each other except the setting is generally similar.

The best film considered a Western is probably The Searchers, so that's probably a great place to start. Just check out Peckinpah, Ford, Huston, Fuller, Mann, and a couple Italian directors who's Christian names are all Sergio.

I know it's not a western but I goddamn love city slickers. Never seen anyone talk about it.

It has two Peckinpah films. Probably the two the person who made thought are the most important/ and or his favorites. No, it is not a "troll image".

I've seen films from varied genres being compared to westerns. Often when two characters are facing each other.
I've read that Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds has elements from spaghetti westerns, somehow and whatever that means.

you know the internet is like the Wild West right now.

There are no laws, and very little rules. There are unofficial rules and technical rules given our current culture.

Truly, that's why I fight to keep the internet free from laws and government. If government breaks into the net it'll just be rules and policy from here on out.

On the internet I can do and say anything--be anyone. And I don't have to worry about legit death.

Think about westerns like that. There are a lot of cool comparisons to draw

I've just seen The Searchers tonight at the end of a Ford retrospective, the general consensus was that it was fucking dire or always intended as a kind of joke (very heavy on slapstick parts anyway). Liberty Valance was much better. Now I truly get the German 'Wayne interessierts?' meme
>>
OP here. Thanks everybody.
>>
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is surprisingly good, bit cheesy but enjoyable. The middle gets dragged like hell and the theres basically a second ending tacked on though.

I'm not much of a Ford fan in general, but I do think Liberty Valance is tremendous and probably his best film.

It was okay. Jamie foxx wasn't really that great of a western protagonist, and it felt like the doctor should have stuck it through until the very final climax to have a bit more dynamic.

The shoot out in the manor was fucking awesome though.

I fucking loved the manor shootout. Also, the end bit with "Bye Miss Laura" was hilarious.

The remake of 3:10 to Yuma is great.

Also try the remake of True Grit.

These have a more modern feel and can help you get into the genre.
