Is the idea of wandering as a tourist in the former Soviet Union a good idea? I am really interested in Central Asia and russian far east.
Anything good to see? How's the people?
Should I try learning an entry level russian beforehands?

There's nothing particularly wrong with Turkmenistan, so far as visiting on a tourist visa goes. The problem is getting the visa in the first place.

Kazakhstan would be my first and only choice.
