Turkmenistan is the one like North Korea isnt it? Might be a bit hard to get in there and probably not much freedom to just do your own thing once youre inside.
Other than that I can only say Im jealous and eagerly wait for a time when I have enough money and time to do it myself.

It will be the hardest visa to get. I will not have to have the Kazakh and Kyrgyz visas (which I'm very satisfied with), Tajik visa will be pretty easy to get. The problem will start with Uzbek and Turkmen visas, although I have heard of some people who did it even over the Internet (embassy in Vienna).
I also thought about deferring the journey on behalf of other, cheaper ones (getting three visas will cost shitloads of money, at least as it is in my opinion).

Generally my goal is to visit every country in the world, possibly with as little flights as possible in journeys a few months long

To get a Turkmen visa you need an "inviation" of some sort from Turkmen citizens. I have a Turkmen friend, he offered to invite me and have me in his parent's home, but the visa is still 200~ dollars and I don't think it is worth it. All the important cities are in Özbekistan except Merv.

what kind of border crossings or security is there on the north side of kazach? can you easily enter from russia?
