A few friends and I are planning a trip to L.A. We live about 24 hours away and will stay there 3-4 days. What are some great places to see besides the obvious. Any really good scenic mountain trails outside the city to go to. Good restaurants? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Trails: Waterman mountain, Hermit falls, and the Grotto in Malibu are all nice and not too difficult.
Restaurants: Philippes, Wurstkuche, El Burrito Jr, Venice Ale House
Obligatory Warnings: LA is geographically huge, you need a car, everything is more expensive than you're used to, there is traffic, the sketchy area is roughly bounded by the 10, 405 and 605 freeways, the air is neither perfect nor nearly as bad as it used to be, and you will probably not see a celebrity in the wild.

Have you been here? Light rail goes to very few places. Not including the airport. I get not needing a car to explore new york or San Francisco, but in LA you need a car.

I've done LA twice without a car just using Metrorail and Metrobus. It really isn't that hard. If over 1 million people can do it everyday in LA, you can do it too.
