Hi there, not sure if this is the right thread to post this in but I'm hoping it's close enough.

Basically myself and my partner need somewhere to live near London and I was hoping to hear other people's opinions on where to live that isn't in the city itself but close enough to commute in when required.
Right now Ashford (near Hounslow) is looking very promising (cheaper due to the airport) but I want to explore my options and gain some insight. Many thanks in advance
>>
You could look for places that will be on the new Crossrail line. A few of the stations are outside but will connect directly to London.

Some of the areas are cheap now but the prices might go up in the future when Crossrail opens.
>>
Luton. (:
>>
>>1125027
hahaha no thanks!
>>

Depends on what you're looking for. Ashford is cheap, only 45 mins on the train from London and reasonably safe, but it's a bit of a dreary place. Isn't as bad as Hatfield or Slough don't get me wrong, but I go there quite often as Canterbury doesn't really have a decent cinema and it really does come across as the classic grim officey London satellite town, full of professionals like you who wan't a fast route into the city.

Probably a great place to save money as a young professional and gives you all you need, but it isn't a place I'd necessarily love to settle, I'd just take the extra 20 mins on the train to Canterbury or other similarly nicer places.
>>
Is there somewhere in particular you need to get to in London? Often you'll find that you get to a terminal "In London" but still have a pretty hefty commute after that. How often do you think you will need to get into London? Do you have a budget in mind?
>>
>>1125087
thanks for an illuminating answer anon, well it's short term as we are in no rush to settle down and get a mortgage and all that. The drearyness isn't as much an issue as the money involved. Cheaper the better without feeling like i'll be stabbed when I step out the house.
>>
>>1125105
we won't be working in London so the commute won't be a daily thing, that should keep costs down. We're looking for work in that area, I don't know budgeting too well but we would both be on average wage, so say 2,000 a month give or take a couple hundred
>>
>>1125105
to clarify, by 'that area' I mean Ashford and the surrounding area. the aspect of commuting that you described could be worked out as and when as it won't be a regular thing
>>
>>1125087
I'd also just like to confirm that Hatfield is a boring shithole.
>>
Maybe Gravesend or Bromley both are fine, within your budget, and not a hassle to get into London if you're only going in occasionally.
>>
>>1125111
>we won't be working in London so the commute won't be a daily thing, that should keep costs down.
I don't know where you're from, but London is massive and even the ring roads have traffic, so it's important to give a town, because if you're working north of london, and you go to south london you're gonna have a 2+ hour commute.
>>
>>1125243
from the UK but only been to London a handful of times, I hadn't realised the size of the place to be honest. I suppose that can't be helped, no matter where on the outskirts we live there will be the 'other' side of London to get to sometimes. I think we will just have to live with it but thanks for bringing it to my attention.

St.Albans I have a house there and it's pretty good
>>
>>1125550
I have a former friend who lives in St Albans and it's 'alright'.
Also Leighton Buzzard isn't bad.

Both are boring places though unless you are a 30 something that doesn't mind going to the slug and lettuce.
>>
>>1124996
Watford is superior and only 30 mins down the m1 to London. Also Uxbridge is better than Hounslow

I would kill myself form boredom if I lived in an inbred satellite town.

Why don't you plebs get good and make some money like me

Why? The only value London has is as a convenient collection of museums, specialist shops and nice buildings. Which you can easily visit by train for the day whenever you feel like.

Pressdram vs. Arkell?

Honestly, don't do it to yourself. London's satellite towns are all cesspits devoid of any culture or variety.

Look into Brighton if you don't have to commute too frequently.

hounslow and the whole area there is cheap because it´s a shithole full of Somalians and Pakistani... that´s why it´s cheap, not because of the airport

there are so much Pakistani in hounslow area that the Pakistani government moved their embassy to Hounslow. No joke

>>1125118
bromley is a no no.. As it´s getting full of crackheads and black innercity gang youths lately..

they got asbos in Lewisham catford brockley etc.. so they move down south (10 minutes by bus) to bromley...

http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/bromley-machete-attack-second-teenager-arrested-connection-shopping-centre-knife-attack-1535053

last few months there were various similar incidents there.,,,and you clearly see it on the streets..

What part of London do you live in?
>>
Tottenhams pretty decent, it has a bit of a bad reputation but living here almost all my life I like it. Also with a lot of gentrification going on at the moment it will probably get a lot better in the near future and is becoming quite desirable now

Does it really matter if the town itself is boring? If you're at any given moment an hour away from London, which isn't boring...

Ive lived in Catford.
What a shit hole it is. Even by South London standards. Did you ever see 'punch man' the crazy guy?

Lucky prick where you gone in s.europe and why did you move
>>
Why would anyone want to live in London or the greater London area? I am from the UK and I don't understand this phenomenon. I understand if you are fresh off the boat and want to be able to tell people back in your home country that you stay in London and also want to meet people from your country, but aside from that it doesn't really make any sense.

because my company has offices all around Europe.. they had a position 2000 miles away .

Doesn´t ring a bell.. I´ve met Fritz quit a few times though. I remember once.. I was standing outside at night at a corner shop.. He came to me ´´do you want want a beer´´´? He bought 2 cans of lager, gave them to me and walked away the second after..........

I´ve met plenty of very colourful similar characters there..

What are some fun things to do in London, anyway? Going there on vacation, need some things to do that aren't just sightseeing.

Get mugged, pay too much for a sandwich, feel generally unpleasant.

In what possible sense?

You can still get internet and computers outside of London you know. And all of the same shops exist all across the country apart from extremely specialised places.

And there are corner stores there with the cashier behind bullet proof glass lol..

Housing is cheap there for a reason anon.

Drinking, concerts, drinking, shows, drinking, did I mention drinking?

>>1130040
I've been living in London 12 years now and I don't know anyone who's been mugged. There's one guy who had someone try and mug him near elephant and castle, but the mugger was clearly retarded. Would you choose a drunk six foot two twenty+ stone South African as your mugging target for the evening?

(Apparently the SA still had teeth imprints on his knuckles the next morning.)
