Hostel recommendations for Taipei and Japan?
Eight elephants for Taipei.
The Meeting Place in taipei was great a few years back. Lots of great food nearby. Sort of place that has a lot of long term guys - not always a good thing, but they were fun there.
There's some one in Dulan called Dulan 21 or something, owned by a Dutch guy. Great for seeing the sun rise in the morning. Was in there on my own with a girl when I stayed there, but was too autistic to do anything
For Tokyo the Sakura hostel in Asakusa is pretty good. More like a hotel with tiny private rooms, but with a hostel vibe. Bit far from the main action in the city, but Asakusa is a nice area.
For Matsu, if you go that way to Taiwan, I recommend the Art hostel on nangan, it's more like a cafe with places to sleep. Look it up on lonely planet.
Can't think of anywhere else off the top of my head
How about net cafes in Japan? can't get any cheaper and there are showers and free drinks
For Japan, check out Airbnb. I found nice dorms for a bargain price in Osaka and Tokyo (15$ a night and it wasn't the cheapest). I do advice you though to book well in advance. Some places have a flexible cancelation policy in Booking.com for example.
Shiraho's Friends house on Ishigaki is probably the best hostel I stayed in during my time in Japan

Long term people suck. They ruin hostels because the more it becomes their "home" the more messy they make it.

Can second this.

They also tend not to associate with transient people as much, as they know they're moving on soon, so they can be shit for fun.
The Meeting Place had some of those, but also some really fun longterm guys too, it was a great mix
tabicolle backpackers hostel in fukuoka. very small, very decent, not very expensive, very chill vibe. fukuoka is a cool city
I stayed at Casa Lapichu in Osaka. Highly recommend.
