Eurofag here, my gf is from a rural city nearby San Salvador.. We might decide to spend a month in august over there... has anyone ever been there? Any advice? What is the probability that I'm not gonna make it home alive?

Even if you went into a bad neighborhood in El Salvador, probably the worst thing that would happen is that you would get mugged, although chances are even before that locals would tell you not to enter the area.
Unless your buying drugs or doing deals with a gang they really dont care about you, they know that you dont really know whats going on and they also know killing a tourists for no reason whatsoever will only cause a huge law enforcement surge in the area (because tourists are high profile).
Just look it up, there isnt any more tourist deaths in El Salvador than any other central American country in particular. Your dad must have been visiting a cocaine refining plant or something along those lines.

Why do people continuously defend dangerous shit holes? I get defending shitholes that arent particularly dangerous like Cambodia, or Ukraine (not dontesk area). But places like Liberia, El Salvador are undeniably dangerous.

It's the least safe city in Central America. It makes the bad parts of Mexico look safe. Don't bother going.
