Thanks,

If you are keen for it come to Mariupol and find Free Space Shelter. Im a britbong and have been staying here for a few days. Will try and organise funds for this place back home and hopefully some visitors. Show them east Mariupol, meet activists banned from Donetsk and find out about the OSCE and Minsk protocol.

Go to Odessa if you are visiting in tbd summer. (pic related) All my friends say it's like a whole different world.
Hopefully will come back before Uni in September.

Mariupol might be a bit too east for me but I definitely am interested. I'll be traveling solo to Ukraine when I do. What's the situation there like now? I know there hasn't been any major fighting recently but are things still tense? How are westerners percieved in the east? Do you need any sort of special visas for eastern Ukraine?

It's pretty calm at the moment, though there are big divides here in ideology. When I was in Odesa there were clashes between pro Ukrainians and pro Russians on the 10th of April rememberance day. Kinda gutted I missed it as I was at pic related.

Attitude towards westerners differs. In one pub in Dnipro these guys didn't like hearing english and yesterday in East Mariupol I was asked to keep quiet in an area due to disgruntled pro Russians. But today going through a military checkpoint the soldier said 'welcome to Ukraine'

Also only special permission visa to go into Donetsk/DPR area. You ask permission from the Ukrainian govt. A Portuguese guy went through the other day. You need to show evidence of friends you will stay with. Aina on couchsurfing organises stuff like this. Though I have had to promises family not to go due to the odd sniper taking pot shots at people at the crossings etc.

There was a time in Shevchenko park at pic related, this abandoned amphitheatre. I was exploring around and this guy walked by me looking a bit rough. Didn't think much of it and sat down to have a cigarette. After finishing it I go to walk down where I had come and see this same guy hanging around. He had something metalic in his hand which he tucked away as soon as he saw me looking. My accumulated paranoia from travelling kicked in and I decided to find another exit.

Also on the plane to Kiev there was this guy passed out next to me. Later on he turned up at my hostel. Turned out to be Mike Spencer Bown. We even had some mutual friends from the UK freeparty scene

These are great - thanks OP.

There's this meme going around about Kiev (and the rest of Ukraine I guess) being this place where you can live like a king for ridiculously small amounts of money - what's your budget like? Did you meet any foreigners living in Ukraine?

So far I have only spent about a day and a half in Kiev. The main places I have been are Odesa, Dnipro and Mariupol. I will head back to Kiev and then to Lviv at some point I think. Will start another thread if this one isn't around and post some of that area.

Friend in Odesa has told me some shit is gearing to go down on the 2nd of May and the 9th. Pro Ukrainian camps outside the Mayor's office were attacked at 4am and later on it the day. Apparently the will be lots of foreign media and he is worried what light pro Ukrainians will be cast in. Also of more Agent provocateurs stirring shit..

Also I lived with free accomodation pretty much everywhere due to family friends, couchsurfing and being a jammy bastard. Spent maybe just under 1500.hyrvna a week.. but I haven't paid attention. But yeah cheap as fuck.

Ah yeah I saw your thread. To be honest I don't think it is actually possible to cross the Ukraine/Russian border. But fuck yeah dude the borders would be tense as fuck. In snipers from Donetsk People's Republic often shoot at people, cars and soldiers at the border crossings.

I think you would be better off trying to get into Russia via Belarus. Apparently it's amazing there.

I was in Odesa to get some cheap dental work. Originally I wanted to go back to Morocco but knew the poor state of my teeth would be completely fucked by drinking the tea and coffee out there. Also I am incredibly interested in International politics/set up to study International Relations in September. And I'm real traveler as fuck so I can scoff at people who don't go on holiday to warzones.

Just spent the past two days/night at a village called Ryban'ske near Volnovakha, 60km south of Donetsk. Visiting my mats's hone village abd staying at his Babushka's house. Really great to experience the Ukrainian countryside. Though pretty sure I walked through a field that had mines in it finger some pics of a dilapidated communist farmstead.

Sup Anon,
Haven't been to Lviv just yet. I do have a guide book onit and it sounds very interesting, though the guide book will mention Lviv as one of the jewels of Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic so it is a tad outdated.. great photos though.
Lviv is supposed to be a great cultural centre and I an sure you can find somewhere to teach English. Though I wouldn't know the routes to take.

My assumption is grave count, there are so many crammed together. Not sure what Anon was looking at via Google maps but some parts of the cemetery aren't visible and just look like forest as they are so overgrown. Also they said it is the fasted growing cemetary in Europe due to the sheer number of people dying from respiratory problems and cancer due to all the pollution in the air.

Honestly I don't know why Anon got so triggered about it.

Hopefully I'll be able to fit it in. Only have until the 17th before I have to fly back to the UK. Still need to head back to Odesa, get to Lviv and see Kiev/Chernobyl. Planning on coming back in August for a short stint so may have to hit it up then.

Does anyone know if Tinder is used in Ukraine? I tried it out in eastern Poland and it worked better than my best expectations. I'm not even ugly or a loser but I get maybe a few matches a week in my western Euro city but when I was in Poland I literally matched with every girl I swiped right with. I'm hoping for something similar in Ukraine.

I think you'll be fine in main big cities and metropolitan areas. There are aggressive facist/right wingers here but my bet would be a Mexican is safer in Ukraine than a Caucasian in Mexico.

Further east I have encountered quite a few, but that's mainly due to AZOV battalion being stationed in this area. But due to the situation and war there are a lot of young angry lads around and many will tend to lean towards right wing gangs etc as a part of belonging and venting. Honestly I think you will be fine though.

are they present in big western cities like Kiev, Lvov, and Odessa?
>>
>>1111221
Can't vouch too much for Lviv or Kiev, though they are big touristic centres and very international so people will be much more open. Odesa is very multicultural and also has a large Turk/arab population which Ukrainians have mixed views about. Though overall Odesa is a melting pot of many ethnicities. Darker skinned people are relatively common there I found. You'll be fine mate.

Things are a tad turbulent but to be honest I think there is even less of a crime rate here in the cities than Paris. Even my observer friend from OSCE agreed. Would probably be safer to avoid large group gatherings and protests if self preservation is a high priority. Personally, I love seeing these militant protests.

To be honest mate I don't know too much about Kiev (yet) and have decided I am going to save Lviv for the next time I'm back. Odessa is great fun. In terms of what is outside of the cities you should definitely have a look at the countryside/village life. Doesn't matter which ones in particular as they are all pretty much frozen in time. Also going through military checkpoints and being questioned by police etc is quite a cool experience

Leaving Mariupol tomorrow for V day in Odesa. It's a shame, I will really miss this place. I have even got used to the bullet holes in the bathroom.

Hey I am glad you made this thread, I am planning a trip and many people have recommended Ukraine

My big concern though, is that I do not speak Ukrainian or Russian. How hard would it be for an obvious american to get around there? I would also like to visit a lot of authentic "hillbilly" places I've seen pictures of. Have you had any experience in those?

Thank you

Pic semirelated I have over 100k miles on 2 different cards, so airfare/hotels are not a problem
>>
>>1114080
Kiev, Lviv, and Odessa no problem w/ English to some degree. If you have questions on the road, try to find a young guy (the girls are often too shy to speak English) and ask him whatever question you have.

Train + Bus stations even in the bigger cities are almost an guarantee for no English. For train stations, it can be helpful to have someone write down your name in cyrillic as it needs to go on the ticket.

Menues are hit and miss w/ or w/o English. Expect some funny translations.

I met many Americans during my trip and none of them died or had any issues due to their monolinguality.

Ukraine is much fun. If you're willing, I would suggest you to learn how to read Ukrainian letters and know how they sound. It takes a few days, but it is well worth it.

The anti corruption protests were attacked a few weeks ago at 4am. They set another on up at the Odesa city hall after which was also attacked

An old supermarket.

One thing I found about Chernobyl and Pripyat is that it is nothing like the oppressive spooky ghost town it is made out to seem in films and other media. Yes it is abandoned but it's not scary. You can really see and experience how nature can and will take over and flourish if it is left to it's own devices. Things are radioactive yes, but because there are no pesticides and herbicides being used the flora and fauna is teeming. Even in the wild horse dung and toilets there are loads of dung beetles everywhere. Also there are many people still working and living near the reactor. Quite odd as all the men there will dress in camo fatigues and look like some form of militia, however apparently it is just the fashion there.
