Thinking about going to Singapore for a week (or two?) in June. What would I be getting myself into? I'm primarily interested in exploring new cities, photography, and culture. Don't know fuckall about Singapore aside from "don't break the local laws or you'll get your ass caned in front of the whole world."
Honestly, that's way too long.
There is little culture in Singapore aside from consumerism and materialism. Sure, they have various museums and such, but it's a fabricated culture with little cohesion.
Use Singapore as a base, where you can travel to other SEA nations from.
You'll be fine with 3-4 days in Singapore total, it's tiny, expensive and as mentioned above, not a whole lot to see or do except look at buildings or gambling perhaps.
Maybe I'm tainted, lived here for 20 years, currently in bangkok to escape and recharge.
Don't go any longer than a week.
One day in little India.
One day in and around MBS.
Apart from that, the malls would be awesome for abstract photography.
Hawker centres for street.
Took this gem on my iPhone when I was there, I like the mystic feel to it. Would have loved to take a DSLR over but I'm poor as fuck.

Any particular reason you recommend Singapore as a base over Bangkok for SEA?

It's small, efficient transport system, efficient airport and relatively little language barriers.
One week and you will have seen it all. Sure, Singapore is one of the most modern cities out there, but if you are looking for culture go to Japan instead.

Agreed.
Even one week is pushing it.
4-5 days is plenty.
