How does one latch onto nights out at party colleges in the US as a tourist? Say, in LA. Are the student unions etc restricted to students only or what?

Show up to what? Bars? Clubs? How are they full of students if tourists are allowed in also?

Pretty much this as ridiculous as it is

The best way to know obviously is to have a friend who attends the college tell you of a upcoming event or something but in most cases you just show up

Look at a Facebook page or something

As stalker ish as it sounds it's kinda normal nowadays
Best way to get free beer too
