What's the best approach to nightlife in California? Specifically LA area.

I'm a britbong travelling this golden coast state, and so far I've been unsuccessful with the nightlife. Bars in Hollywood were dead during the week, so then I went downtown LA this weekend only to end up in Hispanic bars/clubs or gaybars. The only chicks that would give me the time of day were on the street when I needed help getting a ride home.

Is it a meme that you'll get pussy in cali just for being a brit? What's the best places to go to take advantage of my supposedly high value accent? I was thinking of trying UCLA but I don't want a repeat of a shifty night. Hmmm...
