Does it really cost over $1000 dollars to go to Europe? Are there any cheaper alternatives?

Best bet is, not to fly in to Paris, but actually fly in somewhere cheaper, maybe Portugal, Spain, Italy? Then take a train to Paris.

This completely. Fly into northern Spain or Portugal and then train it in. If you book in advance, the train can cost you next to nothing.
