If you plan on visiting Machu Picchu, stay in Cusco, as there are transport systems leading to many other destinations (ruins, mountains) that leave every morning from there.
Honestly, besides that, there isnt really much to see.
And just as an fyi, Peruvians love Japanese people for many cultural and historical reasons.

Well, that shows me that you have never been there. I spend two weeks travelling in Cusco and Machu Picchu took me one day.
