Pretty much this >>1058215 stay in the better areas. I was in Rio most of the time and didn't see any problems (closer to the front is safer) but they don't like white Americans that might make it harder for you.

Just go home at night in Sao Paulo, you start to get very jumpy when you walk into a area thats not so nice.
