Hey /trv/
Have any of you had to learn a language extensively before going somewhere? Thats the case with me. I'm moving to Israel from the US in 6 months, and I'm hoping to know hebrew thoroughly by the time I get there. Any of you have any online programs that are good at teaching a language?

I've always wanted to learn Spanish but my recent trip to Mexico made me realize how lost I was without my Spanish speaking friend. I've done a bit of research about going to a school in a Latin American country. Some recommend Columbia, Ecuador, Bolivia.

Any experience to share ? Recommendations ? Looking for somewhere relatively cheap but I don't want to be somewhere boring either.

i´m from colombia but i think you should go to ecuador, its better for your plans
>>
Ecuador is a bit off-putting for me though only for the fact that they use USD and I only have week Canadian pesos. Is it still cheap ?
>>
I would advise Chile or Argentina, maybe Ecuador, mostly because they are pretty safe countries in SA, and because I had a great experience when I visited Chile and Argentina.

After leaving a review of an apartment at http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g482941-d7829779-r315745166-Fava_Eco_Residences_Anemos_Suite-Oia_Santorini_Cyclades_South_Aegean.html#review_315745166, my gf received the attached libellous e-mail from the owner, followed by more intimidation and blackmail attempts. One will quickly guess that all the accusations in the message (and in the even more creative response to our review, which we got with the message "Dearest ***, now you got the humiliating review response that you deserved. You have to understand that continuously lying has unpredictable consequences. Enjoy it...") have been made up.

Now, we have received another e-mail:
"Mr ***
the action against you for defamation of Fava Eco Residences is ready.
The Senior Associate who is in charge of the case, has already tried twice without success to contact you.
Ignoring our lawyer's e-mails will not allow you to avoid the court, it will just make Ms ***'s [my gf's name; I had asked the owner to leave her alone and only contact me] position worst, since she will appear alone in court and you will be tried in absentia.
You will be asked to provide your home address and not the professional one as you have done till now, so the indictment can be delivered personally to you by bailiff.
In any case, do not reply to this message.
This is the last warning and from now on, the only communication will and can be achieved through our lawyers.
I would suggest you to find a good lawyer if you have not yet done so.
Regards
Antonis Gavalas"

I have heard from friends that this may be the right community to ask. Do you have any experience if one can be summoned to a Greek court for alleged defamation (and if yes, if one needs to appear in court or at least send a lawyer)? We have *some* photographic evidence to prove our case, but not everything (we had never expected to be attacked with such a barrage of lies and accusations), and we're a bit far from Greece...

Thanks!

The lack of legal jargon in that email makes me think the guy just got a different email address and is just trying to harrass you and your gf. I wouldn't sweat it unless actual summons appeared at your job or home.

Thanks! He's a Greek architect (though he studied and worked in London for a number of years), so he may not know the legal jargon, but given that the original review appeared over 3 months ago, he seems unrelenting...

I've wanted to travel my entire life and never got the chance. I'm seriously confused how you all do it.

Do you have jobs? How do you take so much time off? I'd really love to see some more of the world before I die, but I'm starting to feel like that will never happen.

Is there any countries I can live and work in without spending a year filling out paperwork and stuff like that.

The people on this board fascinate me.

>Do you have jobs?
Yes
>How do you take so much time off?
Had a lot of time stored up, but even if not, most European countries guarantee ~20 days paid leave. I took my leave during "off-easons" in mid-October, usually a lot of people can't be off at the same time, but I was alone in my office that wanted leave, so it was p. easy

>Is there any countries I can live and work in without spending a year filling out paperwork and stuff like that.

You mean ARE there. There might be some, but you wouldn't want to live & work in such a place. Not a proper, full time and legal job anyway. Plus language barriers. A lot of North America & Europe is English-speaking, but for employment you need a flawless second and third language.

>I've wanted to travel my entire life and never got the chance. I'm seriously confused how you all do it.

Even though I have zero proof to back this claim, I would hazard to guess that /trv/ has one of the highest average age of all the boards.

I see a lot of people around age 18-20 posting here about WANTING to travel far more than really any other age (Note that I said WANTING to travel). I think what needs to be understood by those wanting to travel is that you (generally) need a bit of a foundation at home. Unless you have rich parents, you're going to need a job and generally the best paying jobs are those where a college degree is necessary.

How old are you OP? Just curious, not going to make you the butt of a joke.

>Do you have jobs? How do you take so much time off? I'd really love to see some more of the world before I die, but I'm starting to feel like that will never happen.

Yes, I'm a primary teacher (Australia) so I have 2 weeks off between school terms, as well as about 1/2 of December and 3/4 of January, give or take a week or two.

Teachers, at the very least in Australia, are heavily unionised and are quite well paid (60k starter with 2k each year, going up the ladder to 100,000 isn't too difficult if you play your cards right and are a half-way decent teacher).

I won't disclose my salary but it allows me to save and take a holiday each year with the time I get off in December/January.

It can happen OP, get a job, save and then take a bit of time off; nothing wrong with that.

>Is there any countries I can live and work in without spending a year filling out paperwork and stuff like that.

No, countries usually aren't interested in letting those without a paper trail to freely wander and work in their nation (legally).
>>
>How old are you OP?

I only travelled once to the developing world (Morocco) and I never wanted to do it again (and I was a fan of moroccan-themed bars), so propaganda like pic related bother me to no end yet my gf eats every bit of it and is always trying to convince me to prepare something for both of us in some "exotic" country.

So I'd like to ask you guys which developing countries are actually not overrated and fetishized. I always hear how India is disgusting and how Thailand is only good for the beach and sex tourism if you're into it. Is South/Southeast Asia overrated ? What about other muslim countries like Lebanon and Tunisia ? Are they on the same level as morroco ?

Been to Morocco and Tunisia for quite some times.

Honestly, Morocco is better for culture than Tunisia, unless you want to see some dunes or local roman ruins (which can be found in Morocco too, but I just didn't see them there)

Tunisia is on the Mediterranean, so water is better there if you enjoy seebathing.

Lebanon seems like a cool place, haven't been there though. Keep in mind that it's not muslim like Tunisia/Morocco, as there's a large group of christians

These sort of promos are targeting people who travel for a week or two per year and spend $5-10,000 on that week. They get the stereotypical "riding the elephant" Thailand experience or "camel ride and turban tying" India or "swimming with the dolphins Cuba" kinda deal.

Since they don't know any better they think this is something the locals do as well. People are very naive. I was recently sitting next to a couple on the plane who were talking about their travel plans which included going to Asia and the girl kept saying how her dream was to ride an elephant there.

I don't think there are many folks who are into that sort of travel here.

hey guys, help me identify the city of my dreams.
let's start by saying it should be in the western world and northern hemisphere.
the weather: don't care much about the weather in summer, cool or hot doesn't really matter to me, but in winter it should be cold and snowy. by snowy i mean not just occasional snow that melts the day after, i want snow to stick around, at least a solid month of snow on the ground (white Christmas everyone).
it should be in the mountains or at least close to them (1-2 hours away), with a developed public transportation network linking it to them so that activities such as skiing or trekking are easily available
it should also be a relevant city, with a thriving economy, skyscrapers, malls, and vibrant nightlife, not just a mountain town with nothing to do

cities that i found that kinda fit the bill
basel, switzerland although apparently it doesn't really snow much in there and snow doesn't stay for long (anyone from basel can confirm that?) and there aren't really many skyscrapers, although frankfurt is not that far so if i want to see a great skyline i don't have to go far.

calgary, canada although maybe winter is kinda overkill here, snow stays on the ground for 6 months apparently from what i read, and is kinda in the middle of nowhere, the only close city is edmonton, anywhere else is a flight away whereas in switzerland you're kinda in the thick of things and seemingly everything is a few hour train ride away

any other suggestions?

pic related it's basel

I'd considered denver but from what i know its wild temperature swings make it so that night snow usually melts the next day, which makes it kind of pointless. still that's a good guess.

Hey /trv/

I'm going to Amsterdam this weekend with my girlfriend and some friends. Some of them may have a smoke but overall where is good to hang out and what should we do?

I think I've found a decent /bleeps/ DNB night for day 1 but has anyone got any recommendations for where we should spend our weekend?

Also on my agenda will be:
A canal cruise
Cheese shopping
And more

Tldr: Amsterdam recommendations?

Go outside of Amsterdam if you have the chance. Other cities around like Utrecht.

Amsterdam is not that interesting outside the museums in my opinion.

Hello /trv/,

I'm sailing from the west coast to the east coast of the United States, and spending lots of time in the countries in between.

A few months ago, I asked /trv/ for any advice on these countries (where to avoid, what to eat, where to go, everything) and you all were nice enough to oblige.

I'd like to return the favor by casting my line and seeing if there was anyone out there with questions about Mexico, travelling there, HAM Radio operation, nautical tourism, regular tourism, fishing etc. I have some downtime on some repairs and can provide answers to the best of my knowledge. I have not yet reached anywhere South of Mexico, which is why I'm limiting this specifically to Mexico. If I do not know the answer to your question, I will tell you that I don't know.

As for OP's question, I found Lisbon pretty cool. Nice food.

In Coimbra now. It's pretty sweet and I haven't met a ton of people who have been here.
Lisbon is cool and has good cheap seafood. I spent a day in Porto but would rather spend more time there instead of Lisbon. Any specific questions?

I know the meme response is Canada but it's true. You can have as many rifles/shotguns as you want if you have a PAL, which is a license you get from passing an 8 hour course on gun safety and a 10 minute phone interview with a mountie who just asks if you're going to shoot people with it.

Handguns need another 2 hours of training and must be registered. They have strict rules about storage so they don't fall into the hands of street dindus.

Semi-auto guns are either forbidden or have so many rules you don't want to bother with them. Full autos are obviously also forbidden.
