I have one and only one. He's been with me over a fuckload of time, and he's been barely unchanged in his aspect besides some small looks and his personality.
Eventually I made more characters that represent me over the years, but they were not furry at all but more akin to eldritch atrocities and strange beings. All with a story and concept behind them mind you, but I barely made them public outside with friends and the like. Depends on the quality of the ref, the artist and the time of the commission.
A professional artist will do their best to remain professional regardless of their mood but there are shitters that will reject even the most basic shit because they are angry or overall sentimental (At which point they should have their commissions closed to prevent this).
An image normally should be enough but it depends on the situation you want the character to be in. But if it’s a full body picture you should be fine, you don’t need an overly detailed picture for that but it might help. If you can get someone to draw you a full body character ref you’ll be golden though.
