Japan has a huge culture surrounding mascots. Sports, businesses, towns, pretty much everything has its own mascot over there and there's a massive industry that goes with it, so they're designed to be as memorable and marketable as possible. Combined with their love of all things cute, female mascots tend to be a common occurrence and draw pretty big crowds for obvious reasons.
I'm guessing mascot merchandise doesn't really bring in the money for western teams, so there's probably not much incentive to give them as much mass appeal.
They also don't look like a weekend fursuit project, which is a big plus.

that depends on which references to use. Although there have been quite a great deal of fake CGI animal girl lewds before so I don't suppose it should be a problem.
On a side note, how many of y'all ever considered making replica suits of your favorite mascots? I've always had the thought of making myself a replica of Bell or Polly, hell even Lina for the longest possible time now.

There apparently used to be mascots for the JR Kyoto West Station. Any coincidence the squirrel mascots look very similar to Polly? Like, I've always guessed the ones who designed Polly also did these mascots. But I've yet to know who though.

I dont have the skills to make shit, but I've been thinking about trying to get a knock off made off the suits from china. aliexpress has some seemingly really good and cheap disney and hello kitty suits.
But there are issues
you can't just trust their photos and reviews and there is a huge price and possibly quality, difference between buying something that they already have done and something they have to figure out how to make
add to that the language barrier and then just look at the differences between the korean Rine (AhRa) and regular Rine, an the actual lotte group couldnt get it right

The cultural gap between mascot appeal hurts so much. Well at least the local baseball team we had around my parts had a pretty decent mascot, especially for a minor league. Pic related, this is Rocky of the now-disestablished New Britain Rock Cats team. He was probably the only mascot I ever liked until I discovered my newfound love for Japanese baseball mascots.
