Tawna wasn't written off from the sequels because she was "too sexy for kids". Originally she was supposed to be a complete sexpot, like a furry parody of '90's-era Pamela Anderson (pic related), but her finalized design was considerably toned down from what the designers intended her to be and she simply became a bland love interest, so the Naughty Dog didn't know what to do with her after the first game.
Personally, I preferred Tawna's finalized design over the furry version of Pamela Anderson they intended her to be and wish they had kept around for the sequels.
