The amount of THC in their fluff correlates directly with how happy they were growing up (more happy means more thc) so people keep them super happy. Since they're stoned from birth on their own thc this creates exponential growth (since more thc means more stoned means more happy) so if you keep them really happy and loved for a few generations you approach psychedelic halluc levels of thc.

No it hasn't. The "every fluffy is an asshole" trope started a year or so ago. There used to be smarties and brats before but most of the fluffies were happy, naive, creatures that cared for each other and loved their family above all else. Before the only reasons a mother would abandon her foals was if it's a runt with birth defects or an alicorn because reasons. So long as the foal was healthy the mother loved her babies so much she would think they're pretty no matter what color they are, even if it's clearly ugly. I personally have everything canon and having certain things going on in other parts of the world. Keeping the possibility open lets you have freedom if you ever get ideas in the future. That being said, you don't have to show off every single sub species in all of your stories.
For example, an easy out is having them exist but having most of the public not aware of their existence so you don't have to mention them at all or having the public think they're a hoax because they are so rare or believe the pictures to be fake. Since they are so rare in your area and timeline you don't have to acknowledge or disprove their existence so later if you get a wild hair up your ass to make a subspecies comic you have the ability to do so.
Why is it that Smarties always choose someone's backyard as their new land? Why is it never just some shitty meadow in a forest or a dingy alleyway?

The pretty much happened in the beginning of The Mare's Melancholy. Detroit became so awful even the low lifes had to move away. With no humans to keep their numbers in check it became a paradise for fluffies and they had no want or need with all the resources at hand. After the government saw the number of fluffies in Detroit, they sent people to capture them so there wouldn't be another fall of Cleveland. That's when the real story begins.

IIRC there was that story with some guy, a completely normal and caring owner feeding spaghetti to a fluffy laced with chili sauce and telling her she must be a bad fluffy because skettis hate her. Then when she entered the "wan babbehs!" cyle he let her have a special friend and poisont her so she'd misscarry every time then some time later he would poison her special friend too.
It was absolutely brutal and heartrending, especially with how the owner pretended to be the bestesd daddeh ever, meticulously grooming, hugging, playing with his fluffy every day.
Just imagine being a dumb little fluffy but you cant eat sketti because it burns your mouth, having a new special friend every time you want it but you wake up him being cold and stiff within days and trying your hardest to be a good fluffy mummah but having nothing but stillbirths again and again.
