I think the mucus is around 80% water, the rest being a mix of different natural lubricants. I assume this is both what makes them excel at special defense, and it helps them get their huge, blubbery booties through tight places.

I don't see the point in arguing since both spectrums pull off some decently done images.
I'm no anatomy expert but fat also develops under muscles and whatnot iirc. I get that bones don't grow with fat if we're getting super technical but for drawings of fictional gain scenarios, aesthetics come into play first and foremost.
