It was the other way around for me, really. I started with the more vanilla stuff like futa and whatnot. Eventually found monster girls, which lead me towards full scalie and avian anthro, and after that feral.

Probably, but it would depend on what "alright for myself" meant.
If its the kind of fantasy world where you can learn Alter Self with a little effort, probably not worth whatever it's going to want in return.
If its relatively low magic and "alright" means I'm a farmer or something and unlikely to ever be anything else, then sure. If they're willing to go to the trouble than its a reasonably safe bet that they're not just planning on eating or disemboweling you immediately.
