First strip it and tool in hard edges where they should be and go for it. I'd do classic gondome or you could go for gunpla generals group colors for fun.

why strip? Guys a beginner too, just overcoat with primer
you could give him more articulation, cutting his limbs and usig ball joints from scrap figures. I do that
