The movie just didnt have time to develop everyones character. Even at 2 hours and 45 minutes, some of the character development already felt kind of light.

I think she was a microchosm (is that the right word?) for how hypocritical the First Order is.
All the stormtroopers are identical, they even need permission to take off their helmets. They are expected to comply with every order and if they're not, they're sent to some reconfiguring brainwashing seminar or something.
Meanwhile we have Phasma, who wears different armor, has a different clothing article that denotes her rank relative to other ranking stormtroopers, and in the end, isn't herself as loyal as she expects her troopers to be when it comes to defending the first order.
She and Finn are opposite sides of the same coin. Finn cannot betray his morality despite his apparent brainwashing and upbringing. Phasma cannot betray her survival instinct, despite her apparent brainwashing and unbringing. One betrays the first order because of his sense of compassion, the other one betrays the First Order to save her own skin.

It's not the recognizing Finn that's the problem, it's the Stormtrooper showing off a personality.
This wasn't some Stormtrooper that had any links to Finn, it was just a run-of-the-mill extra Stormtrooper, why'd he go all gladiator instead of just shooting Finn like any other trooper would?
I don't know, maybe the scene was supposed to emphasize that Finn was highly hated within the FO, but the scene felt out of place.
At least make the stormtrooper somehow notable, maybe he was a friend of Finn's, maybe he fought beside Finn before, we'd never know because they're stormtroopers and they're not supposed to have character, they're fodder.

The articulation is great, and I like the overall look, but the arm joints are weak as fuck for some reason.
It's generally a display model through and through - it's not as solid enough to be played roughly with.

I imagine that the First Order troopers may have been trained to suppress their emotions, but they weren't complete robots. Finn felt strongly enough about his actions to rebel, and once he wasn't in an environment where there were commanding officers breathing down his neck, his actual personality shone through. In the same vein, TR-8R probably just felt really fucking strongly about the whole betrayal thing, to the point where he couldn't contain himself and had a little outburst when he saw Finn.

I should probably add that though I said the articulation is "great", it's actually not completely satisfying. The legs, in particular, could bend a lot more. He can't really crouch or even sit properly (removing some of the props on the belt allows for more hip movement, but the knees don't really go any sharper than 40-45 degrees).

The kit actually stands very similar to the Black version. At a glance I can't really tell mine apart until I look for the cleaner lines and joints. Which feel nice and sturdy, not at all like a flimsy gundam.
