A white whale is that toy you really, really want. However, you may NEVER be able to obtain it either because it's way, way too expensive or it's just too impossible to find. We are way past the "Grail" status here.
So, what's yours?

So, I'll go first with Transformers G1 Masterforce Minelba. That fembot was a japanese exclusive and I think it was produced in very limited run. Not only does it rarely pop on Ebay, the only one I found was a loose one with FAKE weapons... for almost 900$! Sigh...

The listing claim they are "reissue" weapons. One know that most of the time, "reissue" mean KO on Ebay.
Turns out 90% of my White Whales are Transformers so I will throw in a couple non-Transformer entries.
Epoch's Hajime no Ippo line. I think these are the only articulated figures for the series and I dig the cloth goods boxing trunks. Unfortunately they are literally impossible to find. I can't even find an auction anywhere over the past three years.
Yujin is more known for their hash apron love me of Shmup vehicles in their Shooting Game Historical series but they also did a line of mecha called SR Video Game Robotics. The line ran for four waves, really two waves with a alternate color of each one. The first series is the one that's impossible to find and it makes sense with Blodia, Valken, and Leynos being in the roster.

The whole set. My favorite, sage of Halo, is going up to $200 alone.
ThreeZero Shield Liger is another. I kept putting it off and now it's climbing up in cost.

Well the 1/144 RG has a cockpit so I'd imagine if that thing is an upscale that it'd have one too.
Also I recall seeing more simplified versions of the Zaku/ RX-78-2 that are in 1/12 scale on eBay a year or 2 back for about $3,000.

Left is Razor/Martial from Robopon, right is just a WIP figure. Basically the Razor figures were being given out a while back but obviously in Japan only. I'd love to get ahold of her, though.
Probably this Popy Chogokin Gundam set. Both because of my love for classic Chogokin and the fact that it comes with almost every accessory used by the Gundam in 0079.

That, and Medicom Robot Keiji K. Only like, $100, but I'm not really used to spending that on one toy right now.

A mint Live Robo, preferably with box. Sentai robots that predate Power Rangers are hard to find in any case, and loose Live Robos usually look like they've had the hell knocked out of them (the diecast parts chip easily). I'd expect to spend at least $500 for one that looks like this.

One thing the Holy Grail analogy here misses is that in order to obtain the Grail, you must achieve a rarefied spiritual state.
And yeah, a White Whale should be an object you have been seeking, obsessively, with terrible effects to your mental health.
IMHO nothing is much of a grail if you can find it regularly but it costs more than you're willing to pay
It's not so much a toy as it is a prop, but for those wondering it's a replica of the Thorn hand cannon from destiny.

Blue marvel legends modok wasp, that's a holy grail. It's impossible to find. It exists. You can scale that back to rare, or expensive.
A white whale is more personal, it might not be impossible. Hard to find, maybe expensive usually? Mostly it comes to you not being able to get it, losing the auction, not seeing it at stores. It's your white whale.

Seriously, 3rd party Transformers are way too fucking expensive, especially for their size, where little 4 inch motherfuckers are around $40-60, and shit like 6 inchers are around $100+. and blowing $400-500 on ONE fucking combiner is ridiculous.
Which really sucks ass because Predaking is by far, aesthetically, the best combiner, and Hasbro probably isn't going to make one for it's Combiner Wars line as thats nearly at the end and they're already getting their next line ready.
The Disney Store exclusive Sugar Rush racers-with-cars sets. I have Vanellope and Candlehead. You should see what they go for on Ebay and Amazon. I'm not palying a thousand dollars for the whole set of twelve racers.

I needed up getting the white armor since it's a combination of all of their armors, so it's like owning all of them.
