Just wondering about some opinions on the Akira figures. There are a few options out there, but I was surprised by how affordable the Mcfarlane ones are compared to other figures out there? How to you guys think they compare to other company's Akira lines?

Yeah. From their Anime line, lasted two waves. They did Kaneda, Tetsuo, Kaneda's bike, a clown thug and Akira.
Well, like most McFarlane figures, they're basically statues. They look really nice, though.
I've been thinking of buying kaneda and tetsuo. Are they still 6 in? What's their articulation like? Do they capture the likeness of the movie well?

Yeah, about 15 years ago. Same line had Tenchi, Ryoko, Vash the Stampede and Motoko Kusanagi. I think there were a couple others but I don't remember them.

Their articulation isn't too good. If you're used to modern Japanese figures like Figma or anime based figuarts, the style is pretty different, as McFarlane chose to go a somewhat "realistic" route in rendering; i.e. colors are more desaturated and less bright, and textures are far more detailed than animation.
The weird thing is that you may even argue that they aren't based on the movie; but the manga. Akira himself comes with his throne from the manga. So I guess you might say they aren't based on the animation, but the more detailed Otomo art from the manga.
