Enough of the character portrait threads!
Lets have a LANDSCAPE,LOCATION and ENVIRONMENT THREAD!
I am looking for moody, melancholic and eerie things myself.
Think darkest dungein and darksouls.

Dark souls? I have that.
>>48310332
I was thinking in the vein of, not the thing itself, but thanks all the same.

We have one in Italy too. It's located in a small island near Venice called Torcello.
Shit's cash, I recommend a visit if you happen to come nearby.

This opened up at a theme park in germany a week or two ago and I figures it's relevant.

Now that's the kind of tourist trap I could walk right into.

>building a castle on an eroding shoreline
JUST
>>48311887
Those cliffs will probably outlive the castle, anon.
It's not like they stuck the thing on a beach.
>>48311870
Oh and the big coaster above, between and below it all, Taron, is a balls to the wall beast.

How do you think cliffs like that form? Sudden landslides during storms, that's how. Enjoy having your tower in the briney.

"Kilimanjaro is a snow-covered mountain 19,710 feet high, and is said to be the highest mountain in Africa. Its western summit is called the Masai "Ngaje Ngai," the House of God. Close to the western summit there is the dried and frozen carcass of a leopard. No one has explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude."
I love every single thing in this thread, but I wish that I could get better at describing a landscape without simply showing images to my players.
Any tips or recommended readings to help my descriptions?

"It hasn't rained for three years two rabbits, what should we do?"
"Well, six deer, I think we should die"
You can't fight the weather.

Focus on the emotional reaction first. If you start describing the physical dimensions or look of a place you're defeating the purpose.
Think of the first time you were in a high rise building, the first time you flew in an aircraft, the first time you flew in a helicopter. Describe a moment of giddy comprehension; realizing that they had just been picked up out of the world they were comfortable with, and plonked down in a very different world.
Then describe a new perspective. Suddenly, humans aren't limited to mud huts, or planks of timber, or the peaks of mountains, or the blue skies, or the sun, or the bounds of the galaxy. (if playing cosmic horror, humans are limited to all these things, but there are things that emphatically are not). Suddenly you can blot out something greater than all you ever knew by holding out your hand at arm's length.
>>48317856
>>48317917
Then start describing the physical details, and what they mean. The hills are unchanging. Your grandfather was born and you will die without the landscape changing much, and here is a city, half buried by a mountain.
The mountains are the fortresses of the gods, and here humans have hacked them into their own shape.

>tfw you will never live in a castle
Does anyone have anything that could be described as "Gothic Desert?" I'm in the process of writing a western Gothic Horror adventure.
