post what you feel is the best looking cards, what they do doesn't matter, just looking for top notch artwork
>>48235857
>>48235912
Not related to the thread but what would happen when paired with this?
>>48235979
It would just infinitely go on in a loop
>>48235857
>>48235979
i'm not a judge, but i believe the gain-2-life trigger on transcendence would just keep triggering indefinitely (since its life gain gets replaced with life loss, which would trigger itself again). so unless someone had a way to get rid of one of these at instant speed, or had something like Stifle, the game would just end in a draw since no player could ever take an action ever again.
>>48235857
>>48236004
Ah.
>>48236052
So instead something that prevented life gain would combo better with it instead?
Most Lorwyn Elves cards are pure eye candy to me.
>>48236068
Portal has very consistently good art. I can't think off any real stinkers, whereas I can think of quite a few for "real" sets of the time (Mirage Block especially).
>>48236083
if you want to keep yourself alive forever, yeah something like pic related would work
>>48235979
lol that's actually pretty hilarious
I really like this one.
>>48236199
nvm i just realized how bunked up her face is
>>48236201
YES! Ice Age lands rule!
Mandatory.
I'm terribly partial to anything angelic-themed.
>>48236159
I will live forever. None can kill me.
this is about all i can think of for purely "drawn" lands, some of the computer generated stuff that goes on mtg cards these days kinda bums me out, it's more like comic book illustrations then paintings and drawings
>>48236278
*edit*
purely drawn -cards-
>>48236235
It is my go-to set for Mountains, Forests, and Plains.
Unfortunately, my main color is black.
>>48236348
angels are the most beautiful creature type in magic imo
Gateway-promo of Path to Exile.
>>48236371
Wholly agree. I have an angel-only EDH deck that I love to death, and is surprisingly fierce.
>>48236348
That chainmail thong must be incredibly uncomfortable.
I would be happy to help her out of it.
>>48236371
I think they honestly have lame art much of the time. OP's pic not withstanding.
This is my favorite angel, mostly because nostalgia.
Whats the best Island art save for ABUR, Unhinged, or that one Zendikar print that everyone uses?
>>48236565
The Mirrodin ones look pretty sick in foil.
>filename
I've always adored Phage's art, ever since I was a kid.
Noone posted Champion of the Parish?
This guy only needs 14 townsfolk to slay Emrakul.
Winnow that fucking void
>>48236245
I suddenly need to have a foil of this.
>nonfoil 25c
>foil $4.99
I suppose that just makes sense.
>>48236758
That must be Rem Karolus. Only he could be that based.
https://youtu.be/-yIZBUgKfuw
>>48236438
Who's at the helm? I'm thinking about putting one together, not sure whether to take it Boros or Bant. Might end up just being Mono-W and run NuBruna as the commander.
>>48236420
It's all personal taste I know, but I have yet to find a card with better art then this. It isn't just the piece itself, but how it ties into the card and its effect. It might be perfect.
>>48236924
Kaalia, because she's just too busted. I don't even care about demons and dragons, because theme.
Lot's of Terese Nielsen being posted, nice.
I was always partial to the original BoPs artwork, but Jasconius is also very nice.
>>48236846
Rem was probably a Champion of the Parish before he went around slaying angels and Eldrazi.
>>48235912
Wait, this card is making me take double damage.
>>48237070
If played in the best case it basically gives you 10* extra life
*more like 9, as you can't play it when you are at 0 life.
>>48237099
For 7 mana I can gain far more lives than that.
>>48237111
You are supposed to pair it with stuff that requires you to pay life.
>>48237116
But then I would be paying double for whatever effect.
>>48237067
Blade of the Inquisitors
>>48237111
The ideal scenario would be that you use it when you are at 1 or 2, then destroy it when you are at 18 or 19. Of course, that's a lot of work for not really much of a benefit.
>>48237131
Guess he was champion before he was an inquisitor?
>>48236105
Elves with horns? And not looking like pussies?
Holy shit I can dig that!
>>48237142
I imagine him more like Van Helsing as played by Hugh Jackman, who goes rogue as soon as the Avacynian Church is obviously compromised.
I just love this little bastard

I am not really a fan of those.
But at least virtues ruin is creative looking.
>>48237546
this in foil is godly to look at, anon you have good taste.
This reminds me of Giger or Beksiński
>>48237572
I get similar feels from this
I really like the art for Deathpact Angel
>>48237611
Ahh, the terror. I like the old one too... but not really so much.
>>48236758
>Twenty Good Men
Also Kamigawa Mountains are sweet
>>48237611
I was brewing a kitchen table deck with my roommate yesterday, and it pained me to swap this out for doomblade. Absolutely fantastic.
>>48237646
I was just about to post this. I really wish I played more Gatecrash limited.
Not the biggest fan of her token though.
>>48235979
>Opponent
Would be really hard for anything to actually happen since it wouldn't interact with Trancendence unless your opponent played it

When will this meme die?
>>48237919
When digital art stops looking terrible.
>>48237877
>>48237877
>muh old watercolor blobs of paint are far superior to high-res full epic renders
yeah, keep telliing that to yourself when you cry alone in your bad at night.
This is high fantasy game, not an alternative modern art contest for highschool girls, ffs.
I bet you like pic art on original Stasis too, right?
>>48237877
Going to have to agree I like the old art more, but I wouldn't call other peoples taste shit.
>>48238023
Not that anon, but I kinda like old Stasis just for how absurd it is.
That said, Magic isn't high fantasy all of the time, there should be room for a variety of styles.
>>48238023
Why do you always get so bent out of shape when no one shares your opinion?
>>48237815
>>48237877
Nice bait.
>>48237070
That's why you plop in some card that prevents lifegain. Say, Sulfuric Vortex.
>>48237070
Only 1, it doesn't stop life loss. So -1 + 2 = 1.
Tfw a foil in old border style will never exiat
Tsk tsk, no Progenitus yet.
>>48235857
My favorite card as a kid. I think I still have it somewhere but its kinda bad sadly.
>>48235857
I love basically all Nielsen's art, hard to pick a favorite

POWER OVERWHELMING
Objectively the best basic ever printed
>>48245017
this is also cool, ZEN had best angels
>>48245036
hell yeah it did. Always loved the halos over the eyes
>>48237629
this card is so scary
>>48245017
>>48237724
I never liked that they removed the text from basic lands and replaced them with a large mana symbol.
>>48236201
>>48236235
>>48236314
Any good place where I can buy Ice Age~Urza's Saga basic lands in bulk?
Also I always found APAC lands to be gorgeous.
It just looks so friendly. So many mushrooms in MtG just look evil and threatening, while this one looks like it would just wave and let you pass if you saw it in the forest.
This is by far my favourite.
>>48245850
this artwork always reminds me the large circles arent their eyes.
>>48245850
The original cycle of mana myr just had such nice art. The flavor text was excellent too.
this art has always struck me as just being cery pretty, ever since I first saw it.
>>48245253
Old lands are tricky, because you want ones that have that new card sheen to them. Which is asking a lot from older cards. I bought my local card shop out of Ice Age starters in the mid 2000s, because it was always one of my favorite lore sets, so I have about 4 packs worth of Ice Age lands in near mint. This is about enough for a multicolor EDH deck.
I am looking to pick up some Mirage swamps, though.
>>48235857
Lorwyn represent!
>>48246486
best art worst mechanics
I always loved a lot of the Phyrexian cards, especially the ones like this that really seemed to convey the sense of horror Phyrexia was supposed to instill in people.
>>48243323
Was thinking more your opponent playing it, a pretty legitimate tactic against a white deck.
>>48238023
Reminder that a lot of the artists from old magic are respected comic/mainstream artists.
I don't see Steve argyle selling out any galleries/exhibitions like Guay or Neilson do :^)
>>48237053
I'm sad that the card isn't "Creature - Island Fish
Anything by Rebecca Guay or Terese Nielsen, really. I personally love Volkan Baga, but people around here think he's a pleb taste level artist.
>>48242279
my fetish
>>48235857
Hands down my favored card.
>>48237130

No RKF love?
Dakkon was always one of my favorites but I feel he didn't have many stinkers
>>48235857
I'm very fond of this
Everyone who posted a Kev Walker or Rk Post card is my nigger
>>48248487
All of his art is amazing - it is a shame that the new art philosophy from WotC means you won't ever get art like that again, though.
Sorry about the quality of the picture, I can't seem to find a better one. This art always gives me a chuckle.

>tfw this qt is probably dead or now japanese
it's a shame they had to crop so much out of this one for the card. the little sliver of moon really sells it
>>48245253
I have two of the Korean forests signed by the artist in my Legacy Elves deck, shit is cash.
>>48237877
old magic art isn't necessarily better but a lot of them certainly do have more character. that's what's missing in a lot of the newer cards, they just don't feel very distinct from one another
Still the best art for a board wipe ever printed
>>48245017
not even the best plains, senpai.
>>48252728
I dunno about that.
>>48253422
Not a card but I still like it.
>>48237563

>>48253594

>>48237099
Im pretty sure you gain a net value of one life each time you lose a point of life. You gain two life in addition to each point you lose. I dont play mtg tho.
One card I saw that I really liked the look of had an elf chick asleep next to a stream. It might have been black or green but thats all I can remember. Anyone know that card off the top of their heads? It was in the set where black faeries were a thing.

This is exactly what a talking mushroom would say holy shit.
>>48245784
>>48257462
That friendly look is just a front, though. The main directive of Thallids is "remove elf". Then again, I suppose that's not so bad either.
>>48257498
>Friendly talking mushrooms that only want to smite evil 9-5, make babies when they can, and relax on the weekend
Literally the best race
>>48237877
Cathar's Companion wasn't posted because of its art, you dullard.
>>48236758
he only needs 20 good men
>hurling a stone at a hydra so hard it not only kills it, but turns it into a nebula
Why was did BNG and NYX have to have such awesome art and concepts wasted on crummy cards?
>>48238738
OMG that is a very cute kitten. Like... now I am worried. It is probably an eldrazi spawn or something. I don't want that kitten to explode into a elder god horror.
>>48257754
You're on the wrong plane for that, anon.
>>48257784
but it is so happy... sigh. now I am thinking about exploding kittens. Thanks Wizards.
>>48257814
Look very carefully. It's not a kitten. I doubt it was ever a kitten.
Have an actual cat to make you feel better.
>>48257861
Why is the new Necropotence art so terrible? It isn't just different, or bad compared to the old art, its awful on its own. Extremely dark, confusing perspective, and not visually interesting.
>>48257897
I was kinda hoping for a Phyrexian Arena reprint. Then i saw all the new art and I changed my mind
>>48257917
New Phyrexian Arena is boring, but at least you don't have to see Gerrard's ugly mug. So I guess its kind of a wash?
>>48257935
If I had to design a new arena I'd put Norn watching a bunch of Mirrans killing each other

>>48258305
>half angel, half demon, half dragon
but...
>b-but Alesha is the first transexual in magic!
anyway, the art is good.. if not for That thing.
>>48259284
The best part is how the fabric curves inward. It would be a very poorly formed knee. If I wanted to depict a giant boner under that dress, I wouldn't change a thing.
The appeal of the old (through Tempest) art, to me, is that its washed out and faded and is quite rough like an old spellbook (which is what the cards represent). If you pick up a medieval tome, is the art going to have realistic colors and good anatomy and perspective? Hell no.
I like art better now than during the "comic book" phase of the late 90s/early 2000s though. Those were dark times.
>>48260202
Reasonable. Though I can see why looking old and shitty isn't on their MO any more, as it'll make MtG seem more niche.
>>48260247
Yeah, I'm not one who whines about the new art. As I say, I think it looks better than it has during much of Magic's life. I absolutely hated how Magic looked circa 2000. Part of the reason I quit to begin with. It lost the erm, magic it had.
Really the only complaint I have right now is that there aren't as many standout cards. Give the artists a bit more room for some more abstract stuff.
But I'll certainly defend the classic art.

Post good art from recent sets. They "quality" control is pretty vigilant, but sometimes they let good art slip by.
>>48260801
I pulled one of those in foil.
A recent card I like the art for and play regularly is this.
I enjoy Shinewend.
Question: If a creature I summoned would be countered by a blue counterspell, could I counter that blue spell by blinking my card, with let's say

Also, were that a knee, one of her legs would be at least... triple? quadruple? jointed. Depends on how many spots count as leg-joints.
Really, they probably just wanted to have her holding her dress in a kind of almost curtsy-like manner.or they just really wanted giant futa vampire cock
>>48262995
why is being photorealistic a problem? what makes those cards you called ideal be ideal?

Really though, we all know that Mark Rosewater just lovesbig futa dick.
I actually agree on that though. Just having both legs drifting behind her seems like an odd way to dance/present oneself/etc., even if you are a millennia old vampire who can float around like it's the ISS.

This was my first set that wasn't Core, and the first land pack I ever got. I truly fell in love with OG Ravnica's lands, and Stephan Martiniere's Forest and Island are hands down my favourite pieces of art in magic.
I would kill to have either a full art set of OG Ravnica lands, or a playmat of either his Island or Forest in that set. I'd even kill for a mint-condition land pack at this point.
>>48263202
No, you have no idea what photorealistic means.
You also said Guay's Path to Exile looks like shit, so I don't know why I'm even bothering. Your taste is beyond help.

>>48268667
i dunno, the original is kinda goofy
>>48268667
At least you're not the person that prefers the new Snapcaster art over the original (which I deeply despise).
>>48269083
Neither of them are particularly good, anon.
>>48268667
I dunno, personally don't get why people are head over heels for Bob. I think a lot of it has to do with nostalgia factor. Bob's goofy hair and giant forehead along with the old looking Jabba the hut character in the back doesn't really impress me too much.
The half-shave on the new Confidant is rather unusual I admit, but I think the new art worked out well in the end.
>>48269083
Pick your poison, random asian man with a butterface in a European gothic horror setting? Or random jeskai-ish blackdude that looks like a trace of a soccer player?
>>48269102
I agree that the new art isn't particularly good, but it's still much better than the original art.
>>48269173

>I find it very interesting that flavor-wise, many people enjoy Theros
>Theros

That whole plane and it's lore is just plagiarizing the fuck out of the greek/roman mythos and swaping some names around. notZues, notArtemis, notHades, etc. How the fuck is that interesting flavor-wise?
Say what you will about Kamigawa, but it at least it took inspiration from the source material, and used it to make their own interesting world/lore.
