Of course it's a kitten! What, does it look like a horse to you?
>>
>>48064136

Wait a minute, there's something not quite right in that image...

The button in the top collar is on the right hand side, meaning that the left side of the collar will fold over the right.

However the coat directly beneath that has the right side folded over the left. This makes no sense, from a fashion perspective.

Exactly why this should be is a mystery, but whoever this female is (and it is a female, since she's wearing a female coat. The only visible buttonhole is on the right, just below the hand, and female garments have buttonholes on the right, whilst male garments have them on the left. Although given that the shirt has a buttonhole on the left, this would seem to indicate that the person is wearing mixed gender clothing. Draw your own conclusions from that but it's clear that something odd is going on here.
>>
The tail is way too obvious, but i really like all the other subtler details on that pic.
>>
>>48064643
Some collars are separate pieces of fabric, which would explain it buttoning from the other side.

It has one on the right, at the top, just above the wrist. But that could just be a false button, because just behind the LLC text, there's what looks like a buttonhole. There's certainly not a button there.

Interestingly, the background shows a set of towers with a bridge between their upper levels, a relatively recent convenience in our world to allow for travel between otherwise separated buildings without going out to the street or taking long stair climbs. This implies either retrofitting of older architecture, or a newly forward thinking way of designing. In either case, it is clear this town shows early signs of societal progress.

despite being a squirming mass of horrific flesh, there is still a shred of innocence and a desire to feel at peace in what is probably a frightening ordeal for a formerly young girl.
Unless of course she's going "OH YEAH I HAD A TEDDY BEAR TOO, I BETTER GO KILL IT LIKE I DID EVERYTHING ELSE".

What's the best place to start with MTG lore? I'm not all that interested in playing the game, so I don't want to buy the cards just for the lore. Is there a good resource for collected MTG lore and the story so I can get a feel for the setting? It seems like a cool one for an RPG system.
>>
>>48069129
If it's a remaining scrap of independent desire, why does it come with flavor text about how Emrakul doesn't work with independent desire, she just makes other creatures share her own desire?
>>
>>48069175
Start with all the fiction here

http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/columns/magic-story-archive

There's also a bit of crossing the streams with Wizards making a Zendikar D&D conversion

>>
>>48064136
You know, the leech wurm head is the real head. The kitten part is actually the rear end of the critter. This is good because you only get dried hair pellets (like an owl) instead of cat poo.
>>
>>48069175
There is a multiverse.

Stuff is made of mana of different "colors". Each color corresponds to a myriad of concepts.

Each world is a "plane". They each have different concentrations of the different colors of mana, which decides their properties.

To go between the planes, you need to be a planeswalker. Previously, planeswalkers were deific. Then one of them decided to kill absolutely everybody with his army of mechanical goons. So all the other planeswalkers (after much hilarity) ganged up on him and the ensuing war completely fucked the universe in half.

So this chick named Freyalise blew them all up, then fixed it all.

But in the process, this war-and-mending destroyed the godlike-nature of planeswalkers. And time. Think "comic-strip universe reboot". Now, planeswalkers are merely incredible sorcerers and reality-warpers. Godlike to a common person, sure, but not freely altering reality to their designs.

This would be okay, but now there are some very, VERY powerful monsters called Eldrazi on the loose that can brain-rape and kill planeswalkers like it's nothing.

Just another Tuesday.

In Magic, you technically play as a planeswalker.

The Planeswalkers Guides also still exist on their site, so there's enough background stuff to base adventures in each plane off of much of that.

http://mtgsalvation.gamepedia.com/Planeswalker's_Guide

Each link goes to a list of the planeswalkers guides used on the wiki, or you could read the wiki as well for each to get a primer on what each plane/setting is.
>>
>>48069248
It doesn't say that twit.
It's basically saying she twists wishes so that they are what she desires as well as what the wisher wants.
>>
>>48069313
Yawgmoth wasn't a Planeswalker. Its one of his old obsessions to figure out how the damn Spark and planeswalking thing worked.

But yeah, all that fuckery did kinda screw Time, the Multiverse, and Everything. So here we are, dealing with 20 story Galactus/Cthullu monsters that can devour planes, a scheming old dragon who wants his godlike power back, and the scattered remains of Yawgmoth's legacy infecting every plane they're on.
>>
>>48069413
And Ob Nixilis, who has the best internal monologues of any character in the setting.
>>
>>48068612
>>48069129
If you look close, she has the bear beforehand. I think the implication is supposed to be that she's using the bear to grab something from the well.

Presumably coins to show that wishes are pointless thematically, which might just coincide with Emrakul's desire for the coins, which could be to make some weird silver-infused spawn to better fight werewolves or whatever.
>>
>>48069654
Or she dropped the bear and in sometime she became a spawn.
Her wish was to not be alone, emrakul wanted to be one with everyone
>>
So did Nahiri really kill everyone?
>>
>>48069763
Not as far as we know yet.

The only concrete information we have is that Emrakul is sealed in Innistrad's moon by Tamiyo and Nissa while Jace keeps them all sane and Chandra, Liliana and Gideon act as the muscle. Then later on, despite Gideon's misgivings, Liliana becomes a part of the Gatewatch while Tamiyo refuses.

Anything else is Sorinfag propaganda.
>>
>>48069763
Not everyone, but pretty much everyone who mattered.
>>
>>48069248
This is a valid point. The text implies that emrakul would indeed replace the desires of the afflicted with her own; with that said, I highly doubt emrakul's priorities involve an abandoned stuffed toy at the bottom of a well.
That, to me, implies that the young girl (perhaps not as young) still has the will to retain some memory of her former self, despite her obvious condition, and they took the opportunity to label it as a "grapple with the past" in a figurative, psychological representation with her apparent defiance to emrakul's agenda; and a literal representation with squid arms around the ol' teddy.

Giving the design team too much credit? I'd hope not, but that's just how I see the new card.
>>
>>48069763
Three White legendaries from this plane are still alive, and the three major black and blue characters, and Sorin.
>>
Or to be more accurate; Sigarda, Thalia, Odric, Geralf, Gisa, Ludevic, Arlinn Kord, Sorin, and Tamiyo from previous Innistrad installments are alive and unharmed.
>>
>>48069800
>>48069806

>>48069806

Last thread said everyone died, including Thalia, Gisa and Geralf.
>>
>>48069868
No evidence was given. It was Sorinfag propaganda designed to make Nahiri look even worse than she already is.
>>
Would not be surprised to see Sigarda elevated to Archangel status by some kind of planeswalker powerup that gives every single human on the plane hexproof.

The flavoir text is completely nonsensical when read your way.
>Emrakul does not grant wishes because the people that she turns into Eldrazis have no will of their own anymore.
What? That's fucking retarded.

However, it can also be read as:
>Emrakul doesn't grant wishes, the turned's desires simply become part of her will.
And suddenly it doesn't sound like the interpretation of a stoned teenager.

So apparently the lore for Kaladesh will primarily revolve around the Gatewatch going there for some downtime.

Let's evaluate what was written again.

>It's basically saying she twists wishes so that they are what she desires as well as what the wisher wants.

So, she grants wishes in a format that furthers her own agenda. The child wanted her teddy back from the bottom of the well? She's mutated into a hideous, long-limbed thing that can reach down and grab the teddy. She's a horrible monstrosity that serves Emrakul now and she has her teddy as well. So through this alteration, the wish has both given Emrakul what she desires and the wisher what she desires. Both parties are satisfied.

Red also has way too few. Yet I feel like Wizards is going about it all wrong. The main problem for red is that it doesn't have enough variety at common, where pretty much all it can do is burn. The mechanics they have started to shift into red the last few years, and allow it to do temporarily, are not things printed at common though. With the exception of looting they have all been at best uncommon mechanics, and most often rare.

I think the writers meant this when they wrote the flavor text, but it came out wrong.
"Desires simply align to her will" kinda implies that the desires change to fit her will, but the card art shows that the desire stayed the same.

Not only that, red has a ton of "take control until end of turn" cards.

Think of it this way: Blue control give/take/exchange is the product of mind control or manipulation.

Red has dozens of cards that also give/take/exchange control but they are based around impulse, chaos, betrayal, or bloodthirsty violent disregard. The Harmless Offering card fits the pie perfectly. It's intent is obviously a good-ol' Trojan Horse "heh, heh, heh, I can't wait to see the look of surprise on their face" type of flavor.
>>
So to expand on the whole "Jace loses his composure on Kaladesh after eating a spicy curry." thing, here's how the exchange between Chandra and Gideon would most likely go before Jace collapsed due to capsaicinoid overdose.

>>
>>48074703
Yeah, and so it's more apt to assume that a drone that's expressing desire, or any set of goals or plans, is doing so as an extension of Emrakul.
>>
>>48074722
There's exactly zero drones on INN though, they're all eldrazi horrors at worst and eldrazi x at best, the people stuck in Hanweir still existed as separate entities then there's also the granny that's having the time of her life.
>>
>>48074682
That's most of mtg lore period
>>
>>48074754
I mean I can buy that, but why's that the case? Emrakul can presumably shit out drones like the other two (Vestige of Emrakul)-- What's different now? Innistrad has seen a wholly different version of the Eldrazi and while this is an objectively good thing, I imagine there has to be a written reason for that somewhere. Maro's coyness makes me think that reason is the effect of Innistrad on Emrakul.
>>
>>48074842
Different places different paces, I guess, thing is it all feels like Emmy was supposed to be a OG INN related eldritch horror at some point but got shunted out by Emmy because Emmy is marketable.

A midrange deck with 4 Demonic Pact and 4 Harmless offering and plenty looting for standard yes/no? It sounds like a super janky idea but god I want to try it.
>>
>>48075343
Go Grixis or Mardu.
White has Starfield of Nix and Angelic Purge.
Blue has counters, Disperse, and Slimugar's Command.
Pact needs some support that Rakdos can't provide.
>>
>>48075343
Demonic Pact, Triskaidekaphobia, Tree of Perdition, Harmless Offering, Unsubstantiate. Then run a creature-control deck with things like Rattlechains and Nibilis of Frost, Docent of Perfection, Sin Prodder, Stormchaser Mage, maybe Endbringer and Thought-Knot Seer if you're interested in that. It's like, midrange Grixis boardstall with two alternate win conditions.
>>
>>48075390
>>48075605
What would the Grixis mana base look like without fetches? Is there some sort of acceleration currently in standard that can be used? I am mostly a legacy player so no Dark Ritual will hurt
>>
>>48075869
Current mana bases are really variable and everyone uses different shit. Evolving Wilds is nice, the "unless you control 2 or more lands" series is used a lot, and I think the best fast manafix right now is the colorless lands that produce dual colors for 1 life. There's also a lot of the creature lands from last block because the format's a bit slower and you'll often want your lands to pull more weight in the mid to late game.
>>
>>48075605
>AllTheJankCombos.dec

Yes please, my dream has come true.
>>
>>48075605
Docent seems shit because no other wizards and we're already running a high curve, with Pact, Tree and Trisk being 4 drops. Any alternative 1-2 drops in this vein? Maybe some baby Lilianas?
>>
Also, can you activate Tree of Perdition in response to Triska upkeep trigger?
>>
>>48076161

As long as origins is around, you can do jund instead of grixis and go for a full enchantment strategy.
>>
>>48076783
What would nice cards for this build be? I assume oaths?

Also, any idea if we will get Oath of Liliana enchantment in EM?
>>
>>48076827

THAT IS NO SON OF MINE.
>>
>>48076783
Jund is super midrangey which I love, but for this specifically it feels to me like Grixis's control focus would better enable the win conditions in Pact and Triskaidekaphobia. I like the idea, though. I just would build it way different than what I wrote.

>>48076059
That's sensible. Docent does a good bit on its own, but it'd be harder to curve into. I was thinking the early drops would be like, Stormchaser Mage, Rattlechains, maybe three drops like Kindly Stranger or Daring Sleuth. I think two-drops would be a bit more solid than three-drops and Rattlechains is likely the best card for the low curve in general-- You just need the flexibility of mixing spells and creatures. But Kindly Stranger is nice too because it's uncounterable instant-speed Destroy removal, if you can keep her on the board, and you can repeat it with a flicker effect. It's just a bit slow to set up.
>>
>>48073504
I think you got it
>>
>>48077138
The mana will be a bitch in grixis though. No access to nice ramp stuff like Nissa. Your plan presupposes not only that we will hit a land drop every turn, but also that we will have two sources turn two, then three sources turn three.

Not that I have any right to speak of consistency - we are brewing a pact/offering deck after all - but still.
>>
>>48077518
That's why it might be safer to lean on two-drops and spells than try to curve all four turns. But it's very possible, as well, to build it to curve as UR early on for the consistency and then try to gain the skellington mana later on through Evolving Wilds and Llanowar Wastes pain, alongside a couple Swamps.
>>
>>48077600
So let's say something like:
>Turn 1 Insolent Neonate
>Turn 2 Stormchaser/Rattlechains
>Turn 3 tempo play - Spell Shrivel, Negate; or Lilly if by some miracle we have 2 black
>Turn 4 Demonic Pact
>>
>>48077666
Perhaps a turn-4 tree or trisk if you happen to have those in your hand without the combo of Pact and Unsubstantiate/Offering to ensure you don't die in a few turns to yourself. I'd like to have Nibilis of Frost around in the same curve slot-- but that might be spreading things too thin, even if the Rattlechains combo would be a huge way to flip a board state in stalls.
>>
>>48077777
I feel that to be (relatively) consistent this deck will need looting or card-draw. That's why Neonate may be playable in it, besides being a turn 1 play. Tormenting voice may be an option as well - I dont know if other standard sets have good cheap card draw in grixis.

The above cards also serve as madness enablers so we can play stuff like Fiery Temper - it clears the board and triggers prowess in case we have to rely on damage to win.
>>
>>48073101
Ral Zarek please. I need my Jace/Ral ship to set sail.
>>
>>48077842
Take Inventory will be dropping as a one-mana card draw that gets better as it hits the graveyard, it could be alright for just greasing the wheels. Otherwise maybe a baby Jace instead of a baby Liliana-- It's less unique but it's got card draw. Though, Unraveler of Secrets jace does have a better consistency +1, it's just a 5 drop.

Tormenting Voice and Read the Bones are probably both options for card draw, and we also have the third option on Demonic Pact. If we can reuse Unsubstantiates and Take Inventories with Vryn's Prodigy, that could also be plenty. I don't know what card draw tends to be the most competitive, though. It's not the first thing you see in tournament discussions, I guess, since the CoCo selesnya meta makes card advantage a pretty straightforward game.
>>
>>48078036
I dont think this will win GPs even if it did have competitive card draw but I digress.

Problem with baby Jace is his price - even if we want to run 2 it's around 60 bucks, is it not? Unraveler of secrets is nice but as you've said, it's a 5 drop. On a bright side, that's exactly the spot where we need card draw, because we will be fishing for combo finishers. Ideally, game should end at turn 8 upkeep.

So far:
>4 Insolvent Neonate
>4 Stormchaser Mage
>4 Sin Prodder
>4 Tree of Perdition

>4 Take Inventory
>4 Triska
>4 Demonic Pact
>4 Harmless Offering
>>
How does Replicate interact with Modal spells/Escalate?
>>
>>48078232
Not a judge, but iirc, you choose the modes as its cast, once you do, the modes are locked in, so redirection and copying take it as it was cast.
>>
>>48078312
Okay.
>>
>>48069654
I think the implication is she turned and is fighting to keep the bear while her now murderous eldrazi master is compelling her to let go and start slaughtering everything.
>>
>>48078228
That leaves 24 lands and 4 spells already, so if you were interested in throwing 4 Unravelers in there you'd have a deck. I'd probably do 2 Unravelers and 2 Read the Bones, is my guess, or instead of Read the Bones put Nibilis of Frost in for the sake of keeping a board stalled out.
One or two of Jori En, Ruin Diver would be nice, but only playtesting can say whether you get more average net cards from 2 Sin Prodder 2 Jori En, or 4 Sin Prodder, or 4 Jori En.

Otherwise, for the list I'd build, I'd likely thin out creatures somewhere to mix in 4x Unsubstantiate. So, just guessing as to where I'd go:

>24 lands, manabase crafting is pretty separate so whatever

>3x Insolent Neonate
>4x Stormchaser Mage
>2x Sin Prodder
>2x Jori En, Ruin Diver
>3x Tree of Perdition
>2x Nibilis of Frost
>2x Jace, Unraveler of Secrets

>4x Take Inventory
>2x Triskaidekaphobia
>4x Demonic Pact
>4x Harmless Offering
>4x Unsubstantiate

And each individual proportion goes through playtesting to get tweaked further.
>>
>>48078527
You are perfectly right - in no way my list was supposed to be complete, just suggestions.

I think we need some way to control our own life total to not die to our Triska - I saw that happen more times than I am comfortable with. Pain lands serve that purpose and so do Demonic Pacts but I wonder if there is a need for some lifesteal creatures. That being said, your idea of mostly keeping it U/R and playing B for wincons is a good one, I think.
>>
>>48078595
>>48078527
I also think that 24 lands, considering our curve, colours and playstyle, is cutting it a little bit too close. I run 24 in my midrangy U/W fliers and I find it to be risky - in a deck where curve tops at 4.
>>
i have an important lore-related question, viz: what happens if a vampire tries to vampirify someone who's already a werewolf
>>
>>48069413
When he said about a planeswalker murdering everyone with mechanical goons I assumed he meant Urza
>>
>>48078595
Unfortunately with the mana curve, the two lifelink creatures I can really see being useful would be Kalitas and Indulgent Aristocrat. Geistblast would offer an instant 2 damage spell and it'd make itself useful from graveyard with a Goggles copy, though. Might be reliable enough.
>>
>>48075177
The murders won't be announced until MaRo decides it's time for the Jacetice league to fight the Hulk. And it won't be announced until we've had some sets of Jace travelling around the multiverse cracking clues.
Meanwhile, consider Garruk's unknown whereabouts as a reason for the absence of prints of oddball planeswalkers.
>>
>>48078232
Spell copies retain the exact values of the original spell such as X value, chosen modes and targets. Note that most copy effects explicitly allow you to change the target for the copies.
>>
>>48079571
The reason for this is that you choose targets and modes as the first thing after declaring that you're casting a spell, even before you pay mana for it.

It's not to be confused with cards like Cabal Therapy, however, which state "Name a nonland a card". You don't do that until the spell is resolving, well after any copy effects would have already placed more on the stack.

I want to build a "fights target creature" deck. What best do?
>>
>>48092585
Don't.
>>
>>48092585
In old Innistrad I ran a fantastic deck that used Prey Upon to great effect.

Used Wild Defiance so that Prey Upon was +3/+3 then fight, while using creatures such as Bird of Paradise and Avacyn Pilgrim to ramp then Silverblade paladin and Wolfir silverheart for beatsticks. The Miracle for +6/+6 trample to finish and a few other small "Pump" spells and Rangers guile to fend off removal, A few other spells for just gravy.

Generally worked really well, not much stands up to a 6/6 Doublestriking Silverblade and a 8/8 Doublestriking Silverheart in casual games, and I got more than my fair share of kills from a double-striking bird of paradise getting pumped.
