You ever notice how all Dwarves talk, act, dress and arm themselves almost exactly the same? At first glance, it might just seem like its their culture but it goes way, way deeper than that. There is a very narrow range of behavior that dwarves are allowed to act in, and if you suggest something to them that is outside that stereotype they get angry, even scared.
Something sinister is going on in those tunnels. Something that scares them so much that even when they are out by themselves in the human world, they do not dare drop the act.

Some creature that feeds on some emotional state that comes from this type of living, using psychic powers to reward and encourage such lock-step cohesion among the dwarf population. Not to mention it can use this same method to ensure its safety by dictating the behavior of a dwarf to include having a holy site where none are permitted to tread. Dwarf or outsider, and attempt to do so will bring the full anger of that dwarven city.

Me? If I want to pretend I'm in the 50s I go to an ye old style burger joint or fill my picknick basket full of food and go enjoy a nice park wearing an apron dress. maybe trawl an antique shop for the hell of it to get the feel for the materials and living accomidations, visit a museum.
But day to day living the 50s would be a nightmare. Like our fantasies today, we take what we like, and leave behind what we don't. We like elves and orcs and killing, not a huge fan of gender descrimination and -4 str (ebin memes aside). We like high magic, not so much mysterious magic like LoTRs. they say surface drow are all evil and scheming, we say they are confused eastern europe style immigrants.
