Shh, don't let the shitposters know about this... this is the thread to talk about the 40k tabletop game.

I'm trying to find a job so I can buy the rest of my army. I used my excess financial aid last semester to get my 1000 points of marines and I don't want to do that again.

I'm excited about Blood Bowl, a 6 man Kill Team campaign that starts next week, and CitOW - just got it.

Nothing super exciting. Last large scale 40k I played was couple 1850 games with Nurgle Incursion vs Tau.

Not working on any kitbashes, but 2 projects out is a crashed Stormraven using a manufactorum type GW kit, and a Stormraven kit with the Chapter House fuselage extension.

Imperial Cults and Militia. You can obtain Power Armoured catgirls with the following:

Providences:
> Abhuman Helots(+1 Toughness, -1 Initiative)
> Survivors of the Dark Age(+1 to armour saves, gain an option on S4 Las weapons).

Then max out your troops as Grenadier Squads, which have 4+ armour native, which becomes power armour. You now have Abhumans in Power Armour, feel free to model them as catgirls.

It needs to have some kind of turret. You should probably look into stealing one from another kit. It also needs lots of scrap plating to make it more orky.

>>47936933
Here's the pages for the Providences rule, you only get to pick 2 for each detachment. Also there's a few other things to note, in that this army is "BATTLEFORGED-MANDATORY", no unbound allowed with it under any circumstances. Then again this is the same deal with nearly all other 30k armies, most things just don't work in unbound anyway.

Here's page 1. The source of all the hilariously large customization for Imperial Cults and Militia. You can make literally anything with this army list.

They're kind of shit outside of certain very specific builds. The only way I've ever seen it work is if you go the route I did with Abhumans and SotDA, and run them as Max-size, 10 goonz with Carapace armour(Which then goes up to power armour). But that takes out a pretty huge chunk of your points.

So 10 Ogryns with toughness 6(Haha, not getting ID'd by a vindicator is great), and wearing Power Armour is the only way they're ever viable with the sheer base cost.

But that brings to a point of the sheer cost of deploying such a unit. With all of the taxes, you're setting yourself back 390 points for the base squad, plus more points so they can have decent weapons..

Then there's the tax of you MUST have a force commander to get the providences. 170 points for said commander to put the providences into play. Then the mandatory 2 grenadier squad(3 if it's your primary detachment) tax, which is another 195 points.

That comes out to 755 points to put killer whale ogryns on the table... In a cad. Allied detachment brings it down to 690. It all adds up pretty quick.
>>
>>47936955
I think that would make them a bit too good on regular infantry, and this way Combi-bolters can be Assault 3, TL'ed, 18".

>>47937196
40K has a lot of mechanics that help close combat other than just making it the Instant Death phase, that simply couldn't work in a real-time setting. I think the strengths and weaknesses of actually being in close combat are pretty well balanced; the imbalance for stabby armies is in getting into range and pulling off a charge. If we could get them into melee more reliably, the existing Assault rules should be enough to keep CC in line with shooting.

In your bike squad, have an assault marine with standard backpack mounted on a bike base.

Then another in the squad is just a straight up blood raven riding a green bike.
Always position him in front.

I actually started working on some of the writefaggotry I had on the backburner to avoid painting.

Also haven't gotten a game in for about a month now which is a bit lame. A summer campaign started at my shop which sounds fun and currently has 18 players. >>
>>47937214

>>
>>47937463
Okay, you're right, the problem with close combat has nothing to do with footslogging across the battlefield and a lack of effective Assault Transports that don't cost a billion points. The problem with close combat is that shooty units like Fire Warriors regularly stomp Assault Marines and Thunderhammer Terminators in the Assault Phase itself.
>>
incoming noob questions:

gonna get into 40k, all i know is i want to get into orks but have no idea where to start.

just wondering if anyone can provide me with a basic 500-1000 point army list?

I want to work on my own list eventually but for now i just wanna figure out what models i need to buy, slap them together, play some games and then start working on tweaking and building upon my own lists when i get a bit more experience playing.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Get your self two boxes of gretchins to fulfill your troops slots.

Buy a truck to kitbash into ~3 Mek Guns. Will need more gretchin to man them.

Get a Battlewagon with a Pain Boy and Warboss with as many MechaNobz. OR get a Pain Boy and Warboss on bikes with like 10 other fucking bikers.

Either way your screwed.

Look into Space Odins codex or whatever its called if your group supports Home Brew. If you play at a GW prepare to be NPCd.

>Okay, you're right, the problem with close combat has nothing to do with footslogging across the battlefield and a lack of effective Assault Transports that don't cost a billion points.

These are only a problem because shooting is OP and you're being shot at while doing those things.
>>
>>47937587
well i'm not planning on going to GW, just gonna be a small group of mates getting into it so we're just playing for the fun of it.

i like the idea of bikes, seems like they would be fun to paint.

Cheers for the input.
>>
>>47937656
I know those things are problems, that's why I'm working on solutions to them (>>47936188). But the actual assault phase, you know, the part where your stabby guys get to turn the tables and steamroll the squishy shooty guys, is not broken. Which is why solutions to make close combat balanced include always being able to charge (though sometimes at a disadvantage) and having more reliable charge range rolls, and not making Chainswords AP1 or making units that have been assaulted unable to fight back.
>>
>>47937796

Well nerfing their ability to charge from around a corner to safely avoid shooting sure and removing their bonus attack from sacrificing a hand to hold a pistol isn't the fucking solution.
>>
>>47937523
Terminators can still assault, and the idea that two Boltguns glued together will make an easier to handle weapon is dumb. Further, Storm Bolter as an assault weapon is just awkward. You already have pistols and Combi-bolters if you want a shooty CC upgrade, and a Salvo Bolter gives the sergeant something it lacks; a dedicated shooting upgrade.
>>
>>47937523
Salvo on a stormbolter doesn't really change much considering what you normally find it on I.E. Vehicles. Sure it's also on vanilla terminators but they have relentless so it doesn't really affect their ability to charge things. If anything it might make Stormbolters more varied compared to regular bolters which it pretty much is save for the whole "assault" weapon type as opposed to rapid fire.
>>
>>47937857
You're designing a weapon around one unit, the opinion that its dumb doesn't matter, I think the fact you don't stack cover and armor saves is dumb.

Salvo is a horrible weapon type. Assault is what they need to stay as. If we want to make Termies better they need to be able to take multiple AC or TML.
>>
>>47937853
What are you talking about? Open up your rulebook and you'll see that charging without Line of Sight to the target is currently impossible. Making it possible is not a nerf, no matter how many drawbacks it comes with.

And speaking of drawbacks, the only additional drawback added to Disorganized Charge as written by GW is a penalty to Initiative.
>>
>>47937931

Simply charge with one model giving LoS. This limits overwatch losses to one model, but the rest get in the charge for free.

His change would make everyone out of LoS lose their charge bonus.
>>
>>47937931

You shouldn't be nerfing assault at all as it stands, regardless of other buffs. You don't nerf the underpowered shit. And if you can't figure out the los thing you're just a bad player.
>>
>>47937857
>>47937898
>>47937923
>Terminators get two Storm Bolters
Was that really so hard? No diicking around with weapon profiles find on other units required.
>>
>>47937941
Question then, if the only model with LoS dies, does this prevent the whole unit from charging? It sounds like it would if he was also the only one able to charge to begin with.
>>
>>47937958

LoS is only checked when declaring a charge or firing overwatch. Please don't have rules discussions if you don't know how the rules work. This is why the generals are always so shit and the discussions turn into "are you stupid" and "well at least I'm not a WAACfag" or "Tau aren't even OP".
>>
>>47937954
That works.
>>
>>47937941
>His change would make everyone out of LoS lose their charge bonus.
Disorganized charge is handled per unit, not per model. If at least one model has line of sight, nothing changes.

>>47937953
There are no nerfs in there. Charging through difficult terrain gives I-2 instead of I1, everything else is stuff that flat out wasn't possible before.

Can you really not understand how insanely good charging out of Deep Strike after Running is? Or Consolidating into combat?
>>
>>47938004
Eh, fair enough. Just seems like something that would get brought specifically to deny someone a charge anyway.

>>
>>47937954
That would necessitate adding some sort of Multi-tracker equipment and widespread remodeling.
>>47937923
I literally outlined why the change made sense for non-terminators. Either actually read my posts or don't bother responding.

Only Grey Knights are really negatively hurt by the change, but they could either get their own Angelus Boltguns analogue or have Hammerhand grant Relentless.

Salvo is a fantastic weapon type, and we need to see more of the high rate of fire Heavy Weapons transitioned to it.

Well if Britain plans on benefiting from all of the good trade deals that are currently in place for EU members then it will have to agree to pretty much everything they were all ready agreeing to.
If they don't agree to the terms they will likely lose most current trade agreements which would fuck their economy.
>>
>>47938139
I tried that too anon, my FLGS's owner is a bro tier Rogue Trader grognard, but even he can't get Forge World to plz gib. Such is life. I think it's probably just an inability to move product with most FW stuff, though there's probably some bullshit corporate component, or maybe they just can't swing wholesale prices from FW's warehouse.
>>
>>47938146
So basically, prices will go down but the tax to buy anything across borders will become skyhigh in an effort to chastise the UK?

This does mean that you can go to the UK for cheaper since your money will go farther (god knows the pound was very strong just yesterday..), but moving to the UK will now be quite prohibitive I think. Coming from another EU country, now I'll have to jump through hoops.

>how will Brexit being confirmed happening affect our hobby?
GW will cost more

>>
>>47938542
W-Why?
>>
>>47938560
GW is a company that has investment in various nations, and now has to deal with with the fact that their main coin will get pretty much worthless. Also will have a new layer of bureaucracy that didn't have before.
What happen is that foreign investment (shops, stocks, warehouse, personnel, etc) became that much more expensive.
They do acquire a good amount of foreign money which can counter that situation, but UK and EU are still their main market.

Meanwhile, FW, which is a subcompany of GW (and so, have his own balance) have almost all of his investment in UK. They produce in china, but still, the majority of their expenses are in UK.
They trade in pounds and require pounds. From our point of view, it's just a coin we can acquire cheaply.
>>
>>47938646
Interesting. I didn't know they produce in china. I thought FW was essentially owned by GW 100% anyway.

>>
>>47937560
here's some words of wisdom.
you can kitbash tankbustas from the boyz kit.
You can make more lootas/burnas using boy torso, heads and legs and the loota/burna kit. All Hq's can be kitbashed with bits from the loota/burna kit (Painboy head being a burna head, the mek head being a big mek one) and a nob body, with some kustomizations. I have a painboss that has a burna head painted white, a cross painted onto a boss pole, a circular saw arm and a spear gun arm with nurgle's rot to represent 'hurty juice
>>
So basically, wait some time for the GBP to be at its possible lowest and then buy shit before GW pricehike to oblivion to counteract? Hoe long would one ideally wait?

I might buy myself a box of Vargheists cause there's no way in hell am I buying any more models if they get even more expensive at this rate. And Brexit's going to shoot up the price much higher than any yearly price hike ever did, I believe.
>>
>>47938697

Biggest problem I run into with kitbashing Orks is lack of legs.

Torsos are cheap as hell to get. Like 10 for $3 on ebay. Legs end up being >$2 each. At that price just getting a box of boys at MSRP is cheaper.

I think I'm going to learn how to recast. Just for legs and bodies.

>I thought FW was essentially owned by GW 100% anyway.
It is.
But as a subcompany they have their own staff, their own revenue, their own managment, etc.

The main group is called Games Workshop Group PLC, which controls various subsidiary, which may be more or less active and independent (like Forge World Black Library) or dormant (like Citadel Miniatures).
There is then, of course, Games Workshop Limited, which is the main one, and various other Games Workshop (Retailers).

It's a bit of a mess.

Okay, how's this?

>Terminator Protocols: This model may fire its Storm Bolter twice in each Shooting Phase

It buffs the model you want it to, doesn't have any unforeseen consequences, is compatible with existing Terminator models without modification, and is similar to an existing rule (Devastator Protocols) but with its own distinct flavor. What's not to like?

Also, if anything is getting Salvo it should be Heavy Bolters, not Storm Bolters.

I am an auditor by trade, and fuck companies doing this shit. At least GW does it in a *somewhat* sensible way. Seriously, some companies are straight up retarded, and have a conpany for the employees, who are all working on production for another company, whose products are being sold by a third company, by sales personel working for a fourth conpany.

GWs structure at least have a semblance of reason to it.
>>
>>47938989
Make them S5 to match burst cannons from the Tau empire, and give them twinlinked again.

4 S5 AP5 shots that hit on 3s with rerolls is pretty good. Weight of fire at a decent strength is enough to threaten pretty much anything but 2+ saves. I am a Tau player, and I love my dual burst cannons, because a squad of 5 vomit out 40 S5 AP5 shots, so even hitting on 4s is fine, because I will still cause a fuckton of wounds on most things, even terminators doesn't like making 15 saves. Giving something similar to terminators on top of their powerful melee would make them good allrounders that are both dangerous before they hit CC, and will absolutely destroy most things once they do hit CC.

If we don't want to chamge the rules for a storm bolter, incoporate it in the terminator protocols idea, and say they threat them as twinlinked with +1 S and can doubletap them. Or better yet, let them resolve two shooting attacks, so they can fire at two different units each turn.
>>

Might as well just give them a Heavy Bolter. No need to dick with special rules and modifying weapons.
>>
>>47939163
It's leaked, you just have to work to find it.
>>
>>47939163
Have you tried reading the thread? It gives Preferred Enemy against one unit per turn.
>>
>>47939152

You see I disagree with with the idea of increasing their volume of fire. Tactical Terminators need to have options, they need to be able to pop a rhino and get the charge off on the guys inside.

Terminators really need some ranged AV imo. The problem is Centurions have usurped this role in a very bad way.

Sorry about saying your posts sucked. WTF IS WITH THE CAPTCHA TODAY.
>>
>>47939204
Well they do get the cyclone.
>>
>>47939204
Well, giving them 2 shooting phases at a lot of S5 shots could well do this. A lot of transports are only AV11, and especially on the rear or side armour, so S5 is enough to threaten them a whole lot. This means they can pop the vehicle, shoot the people disembarking, and charge them.

We don't need them to destroy landraiders before they even charge them.

We tried something fun with terminators yesterday. We have been toying with ways to make them better, and this seems to be the most popular option.

Remove the invul. Instead, a unit of terminators have a power field that protects them. For each terminator in the unit, they have 1 AV10 shield. A hit or glance removes one shield with no further effects.

This was actually really balanced. It made them fairly durable against single shot guns or small arm fire, but without making them ridiculously unkillable.
>>
>>47938968
Also, what's the best loadout for the Battlewagons in the Blitz Brigade?
>>
>>47939265

You and your opponents are garbage at the game then. Three bolter marines negates their invuln and then just shoot them with plasma melta or grav and they drop instantly.
>>
>>47939295

Nonono, 1 shield PER Termie. So 5 total.

Still seems weak unless all shields came up automatically at the end of each turn. Also do blast weapons count as 1 hit?
>>
>>47939310

Bolters are Rapid Fire. Even a single high shot weapon like an Assault Cannon would drop the shields. This is a huge nerf to Cataphractii as well.
>>
>tfw asleep and missed the GBP going down
>it will only go up from now on

i just wanted the kriegs.
>>
>>47939310
>Also do blast weapons count as 1 hit
Yes.

>>47939335
We havent touched the new forgeworld port, but AV10 means you need 6s to glance with bolters, and you still only have a 66% chance of even hitting in the first place. That is not easy to burn through.

They so not recharge, but when teleporting in, they usually only need to survive 1 shooting phase to do their work.
>>
>>47939356
If Void Shields can be AV12, the terminator ones should be too. Especially considering that they don't regenerate and Terminators will usually be shot at with high S stuff or sitting safe inside an AV14 transport. Small arms fire is not the Terminator's only weakness, especially not in the current metagame where people are spamming strong weapons and not very many hordes.
>>
>>47939356
ideally the invuln would not be able to be stripped by S4 or S5 basic weaponry at all. if the opponent shoots at them in any order of small arms and high S the terminators die. you can make two invulns in a row you cannot survive two in a row if shield is down
>>
>>47939373
of course the small arms would go against their 2+ instead though. like have the shield only work against AP2 and Ap1
>>
>>47939364
5 AV12 shields would make them nigh unkillable for most factions. Again, you generally only get one shooting phase against these guys in the first place, so regenerating or not, if you canno remove them in one turn, they WILL hit CC.
>>
>>47939383

Only if your list has no way to deal with Deep Strike, which means you weren't prepared. You can deny their DS or pod in many ways, including simply spacing your guys out. Literally nobody is playing foot Terminators teleporting in for a reason. And if they're in a LR this discussion doesn't apply anyway.

>>
>>47939453
Would a kannon be better than a rokkit? Only 5 more points and you get to choose shell types.

Doesn't a Killkannon also completely defeat the point of loading up a bunch of boyz/nobz since it drops the capacity.
>>
>>47939474
Depends on the cargo.

Bitz brigade is so big youd have to haul 100 boys to use all the capacity, so it meskes well with 3 MANs and a warboss, or a Bullyboyz formation.

Orks dont really need light anti infantry firepower, so gor me the kannon would just be for looks.

>>47938989
>I think they suck
Awesome counter-argument. I can see that wasting time trying to convince you is pointless.

It's silly to expect terminators to be some sort of uber-unit that can just waste everything in there path without support from the rest of the army. Even if you give them a second heavy weapon, you still end up with the same issue that Terminators and Tacticals already face; the majority of the squad functioning as glorified cheerleaders for the one/two guy(s) allowed to take a different weapon.

I'd add ~50-100 points to let people customize their stuff.

Letting people build any variants that they get the pieces for would also give some of the armies some more options (like CSM).

You'd also have to make up your own formations for Khorne and Nurgle. At that point, why not make Start Collecting formations for every army? Hell, why not just make a point limit and restrict people to 1 HQ, 1 Troop, and one extra unit. Maybe even get meta with it and give them an army MSRP limit as well.

Alright then.

Quid Fornax is a major forge world based in the Duratus Sector, and located in the southern portion of Segmentum Solar. It is an ice world, but is also classified as a war world due to the Feral Ork population, the thinking machines left over from the Age of Strife and the Necrons that haunt the planet. The latter two rarely bother the inhabitants of the planet unless they are thawed out from their frozen prisons, but they are still watched over carefully. The locals of the planet are entrusted to take care of the Ork population to unburden the psuedo-Skitarii that lives in city fortresses that are spread out across the planet and the real Skitarii so that they may guard over entrances to the Necron tombs and Men of Iron factories. The largest of these city fortresses guard the base of the tech priests.

The forge world's early history is shrouded in myths and legends, but there are a few accepted facts even if they aren't fully believable. The official story is that the exploratory fleet that carried the founders of Quid Fornax were carried back in time by the fickle tides of the Warp to Sector Duratus during the Dark Age of Technology just two Terran years before the Age of Strife happened. The story goes that the founders tried to warn the people of sector about the horrors of the future: alien "allies" and machines turning on humanity, monsters from the Warp and mutants spilling humanity's blood, but the people of the past refused to believe the technophiles from the future and branded them as lunatics. They were soon to regret not paying heed to the "lunatics" after those two years had passed, but the tech priests did not even feel the need to say "I told you so". There was only gathering supplies and building a base to do.

If Power of the Machine Spirit isnt in the brb, then its in the Astartes codex.
>>
>>47941777
Not trying to be pedantic, I really don't know. When you say "Power of the Machine Spirit" is it the same as "Machine Spirit"?

I am looking at a vindicator and the rulebook says it may take "Machine Spirit" for 25 additional points.

Try the program battlescribe. It exists to click lists together, but many rules are in there.

Otherwise the codex should have a rules section. Be mindful of the names of the rules, machine spirit, for example is called 'power of the machine spirit' usually.

Oh, HH. So a forgeworld book. Unfortunatly forgeworld is rather notorious for half-assing with rules.

>Men of Iron factories

wut, are these even a thing at any point in known history? I thought men of iron were some ancient myth tier shit that took place during the skynet debacle and don't exist anymore
>>
>>47941829
Ahh I see. I was using battlescribe, and in the highlight it says it confers the "Power of the Machine Spirit" which *is* in my rulebook.

Damn HH book specifically says "Machine Spirit"

The threats of the Age of Strife that ravaged the sector took multiple forms. As myriad alien races, daemons, other psychic predators, mutants, petty despots, the Men of Iron, and multiple factions of thinking machines that viewed themselves as the true rulers of the sector wagged war countless lives were cut short, worlds burned, and humanity's technological and scientific knowledge was lost. The priests from Mars took control over the human element within the sector after establishing the foundries of Quid Fornax, but their rule was inefficient due to the first Fabricator General of Quid Fornax Leto Duratus. Leto was too cowardly to deal with the horrors of the Age of Strife, and too timid to perform the necessary evils that were needed to keep humanity afloat during the turbulent times. He used bionics and DAoT life extensions to keep his guilt ridden life from expiring with a healthy dose of cowardice for good measure. After the death of his best friend Leto's sanity finally snapped and only then did he decide to man up and be a monster for the sector's sake. Con.

Oh no, you would have to go through the trouble of choosing each item individually... drat...

I'm trying to figure out what to put on my vindicator as a pindle weapon. What is a good anti armor or anti air weapon?

My choices are combi weapon, havoc launcher, heavy bolter, heavy flamer, or twin-linked bolter
>>
>>47942194
True, but it does have approx. $30 in savings, and with the £'s value dropping it's about worth $1100 instead of the £1300 it was a couple days ago.

Is this a more sophisticated form of the hidden rebel general?
>>
>>47942202
The cheapest one.
The spare weapons only exist to make weapon destroyed results less likely to take the cannon.

So /tg/, do you play Warhammer with your wife's son?

>The spare weapons only exist to make weapon destroyed results less likely to take the cannon.

What does that mean? You get to choose what weapon gets destroyed if your vehicle takes damage?
>>
>>47942361
no, its random based on a roll, more weapons means less chance you roll on the good weapons getting destroyed
>>
>>47936313
Hey that's great.
There's...really nothing I particularly want

If the Imperium has a problem with the utilization of Xenos technology, then why exactly were they using obviously alien Black Stone Fortresses as Naval installations?

And did they at any point notice that those things are built in the shape of the symbol of the Ruinous Power?

How's now compared to euro?
>>
>>47942361
You roll.
If the vehicle only has one weapon that weapon has a 100% to be destroyed, effectively becoming an overpriced Rhino.

But if the vehicle only has one weapon that weapon has a 50% to be destroyed. Definitely worth the 5-10pts paid.
