Making some more custom deathwatch. A crimson fist (the midget), son of Antaeus ( the giant), and a black dragon.

The son of Antaeus might look a bit weird. He's got a flamer in his right hand almost like a walking cane. And he's resting his hand on the pommel of his sword with his left.. It looks a bit weird from this angle.

I like the color palette you've chosen, but this looks a little sloppy. some of your highlights need neatening up, and I would consider some brighter highlights (up to white?) on the greys. Your OSL or whatever that blue ink is supposed to be would look like a mistake if it wasn't symmetrical. Consider putting in more effort on that or painting it out

About 90% finished with my first sister. Primer went on a bit thick but other than that I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out, though I'll probably tone down the weathering a bit
>>
>>47893488
I see you applied the weathering with a brush?

Try using a sponge with a bit of the weathering color on it, dab it along the edges. Looks much cleaner.

Other than that, pretty good first miniature -- From now on it's a matter of getting better at seeing the little details and learning brush/paint control

You get some sort of respirator? Acrylics aren't toxic, but the dust still isn't something you want to breathe. If you're dipping into enamels & lacquers (for clear coats, maybe) you're dealing with organic vapors and NEED a filtered respirator.

You might consider scrubbing the paint off with non-acetone nail polish remover. I've had some luck with it when used on the kind of styrene Citadel makes their models out of, but I couldn't pomise you it's not gonna hurt whatever your figure is.

Those aren't highlights on the blue burna boy. Their scrapes and scratches in his coat of blue paint from when he was stored haphazardly in a box with other similar models. GirlPainting is good if you can get past "her" voice. That's a big if, but the work is decent.

While we're on the subject of tutorials, can someone post some for OSL? Pic related is my very first attempt at it. I've seen worse, but it certainly leaves a lot to be desired. I'm starting a Convergence of Cyriss army and there's gonna be a whole lot more, so it's go-time.
Regular brushes would be preferable, but if it's easier to do with an airbrush that's welcome too, although the only 2 I have are a .2mm and a .3 and I've never used them for anything more complicated than base coating, or shading before I base coat.

That I had a few spots too thin and they came out blotchy?

That I tried to do a highlight on the robe and it came out way too strong so I just said fuck, and covered it with base again?

>>
>>47906336
what the hell do you mean by "fix your basecoats"? Saying "it's bad." does not help.

>>
>>47905576
Lrn2cast. @ $30 gets you rubber and enough resin to cast off a couple army's worth of bases.
>>
>>47906266
Hey, not the guy you've been responding to but, you're being a twat.

Your model looks like shit. The paint looks thick and globby, and there are splashes of color where there shouldn't be.
But you know what? It's okay, relax, stop making excuses. Strip the sucker and try it again. We all have to start somewhere, and if you're willing to take criticism (which from 4chan is gonna be a little rough) you'll make it.
>>
>>47906362

The basecoats appear to be showing primer underneath, or whatever those black spots are supposed to be

It's also just generally speaking, a mess. Stop taking this shit personal.
>>
>>47906389
There are no black spots on the model in my hands. Are you talking about under the ribs?
>>
>>47906424

Not him, but the flesh doesn't seem to have a consistent tone, looks like some parts have thin coats where you can see black primer underneath
>>
>>47906477
I absolutely assure you that is not primer. That is most likely me thinning too much and the pigment going blotchy, because it's a layer of Cadian mixed with white over a layer of bugman's glow, primer is completely hidden. But I have to go to work now.

I won't be stripping, but I may just spend another $2.50 and buy a new one eventually.
>>

You can use nail polish remover with acetone, if you can't find anything else. Just remember to use it sparingly, as it does soften the plastic.

>>
>>47900878

>>
>>47899295
I disagree with the "fix your basecoats" consensus. Yeah, smooth and even is always good, and yes, the cloth especially is pretty blotchy, but I say full speed ahead, do some highlights. The fig badly needs highlights, and the areas with the worst basecoat coverage are the raised areas that are going to be covered by the highlights anyway. Do it, anon.
>>
>>47906508
Hacking it off isn't even the easy way to change up mushroom bases, either. Just glue it into a sunken base and putty the gap.
>>
>>47906365

I know how to cast, I just don't want to. My need to have non-repeating bases outweighs the efficiencies of casting.
>>
>>47906538
You gotta believe me that the real skirt looks a lot better than that picture. The color did not come out at all.
>>
>>47906538

How the fuck can you even tell from a 55kb blurry jpg. It's not about smooth and even, it looks like the paints were thinned too much with water and it pooled everywhere, leaving the top layer way too thin while getting paint all along the edges where it shouldn't be.

It looks like it's melting.
>>
Dont have a picture right now but can anyone help me

I've airbrushed up a mini, base colour and shading with the airbrush which makes the model very matte, which is cool.

however, to bring up the edges, I add a few glaze layers (thinned with lahmia medium). This glaze adds a very shiny film, which is visible under lamp light, and stand out as the rest of the model is matte.

How to get around this?

>I like warhammer 40k the most but just how hard or expensive is the hobby?

The rabbit hole goes as deep as you want. Ironically, it's probably not any more expensive than hooking yourself up to a Playstation or Xbox that has $60 games coming out every couple of months.

>I have no interest in playing tabletop

I love the game, but don't get a lot of time to play it. It's what you put aside for in your life, just like any other hobby.

>Is this a fun hobby?
That's subjective, but since the guys here are doing it you'll get an echo chamber of yes here. I can say that it is nice to have a creative outlet that provides you with an outline of some sort (the setting) and lets you put your skills to work. It's rewarding to finish painting or building something and see your skills improve. And if you like the lore you have something to keep you busy while you are not able to actively do something hobby wise.

>I like warhammer 40k the most but just how hard or expensive is the hobby?
As hard as you are ambitious and as expensive as you are obsessive/greedy/a collector.
If I'm gonna spend 20 hours on painting a miniature I can even rationalize and justify GW prices. If you compare the costs to sports equipment, movie tickets or booze you'll find that it's about as expensive as most other hobbies.
You can get beautiful minis that are way cheaper than GW stuff though. I'm a big fan of the Perry historicals and I'm using them for fantasy games or conversion fodder for sci-fi stuff as well.

>I have no interest in playing tabletop but I do like the minis abd I think I would like painting.
Then you should give it a try. Maybe you can swing by a local game store and ask if they can teach you a few basics. If you like it stick with it, if you don't you know you can move on.
Just don't buy dozens of minis or all kinds of paints you don't need to start with.

If you just like painting minis the 'hobby' becomes kind of cheaper than if you are a gamer.
Especially if you are going for display quality paintjobs. You'll spend more time on less minis.

As with anything else really, the only way to find out if you like it is to give it a try.

This might help get you started.

>As an accent, I chose to use a bright orange as the primary color for the jewels on the model and to use a cool lavender color for the face mask. The orange is a natural contrast color for the purple. Actually, yellow is the contrast color for purple, but the jewels are an accent and not a dominant piece and since both the purple and orange have red in them, it minimizes the competition between colors and makes the transition a little more smooth.
>The lavender facemask kept the purple color I was working with, but removed the red aspect of it. This makes the helmet a cooler color, and brighter at the same time. With the pure white edge highlights, it makes the facemask the center of focus for the viewer’s eyes as most of the white edges point toward the lighter colored facemask

Trying to prime white by brush is a nightmare. Vallejo primer is too watery whereas their black is perfect, which pisses me off to no end. I fear I'm going to put too many layers for just the primer (doing WE so it's still like 75% of the armor) and it'll be too thick.

Lavender is still a shade of purple, so it keeps with his paint scheme of doing the armor all purple. But it's both lighter/brighter, and it has less of a red shade to it. Basically, lavender is still purple and so keeps with the theme, but it's a cooler color than purple, so it cools down the color of the model. The opposite of that would be painting the mask a pink color, which is lighter, but warmer.

Seriously, just go read an article on color theory or whatever. It's just warm and cool, lighter or darker, and complementary vs contrasting colors. One half of the color wheel is warm, the other cool. Opposite colors are contrasts, colors beside each other are complements

>>
>>47911561
Try using a smaller brush and wiping off some of the paint on your brush. Loading too much on can lead to problems like that. Otherwise I recommend some stronger shades and highlights. The skull on top should be good with a nice umber wash (OP refers to Agrax for a very good reason) and then a bright white drybrush. The boots could also go for a black or umber wash, with the folds specifically picked up with a brighter shade of brown just to start.
>>
>>47911500
Then wait until you can get a decent pic
>>
>>47911561
Washes are your friend. They'll fill in all the cracks and crevices and little grooves and all the places that should have shadows, as well as all the lines that separate different surfaces of the model. Without that thin darker line separating areas, even if you paint perfectly in the lines it will still manage to look sloppy.

>>

He just means it tones it down. When you out two colors together, they each affect how the other looks. Say you have purple. If you accent it with red, it will make the purple look warmer. If you accent it with blue, it will look cooler. Even though it's the same purple, it looks different. It's like those old optical illusions where it's the same color of grey but it looks different depending on if the background is black or white.
