Picked up that bloody loota box.

Going to turn the burnas into more looted guns so I atleast get a reasonable amount of mans out of it.

from the last thread on the topic of stolen models;
in my house I keep my minis on a shelf of a bookshelf in my loungeroom, and the owners (we're renting tenants) are selling, so they've been having open homes.

during one of the open home days one of my two commisars went missing from amongst the fifty-odd guardsmen i had sitting there
just the commisar
pocketed by some shitlord, from my own home.

also update on my nearly finished Custodes
>>
>>47835139
That's fucked. I don't know how people can just take shit from someone else.

I had one of my chaos bikers stolen back in 3rd ed days. We were showing some kid how to play at the gaming club and he must have pocketed it from my casualties at the side of the table.

Get some shade into that red. It's looking aggressively flat. The swords could use a little something too. A bit flat and too shiny looking.
>>
>>47835120

>not getting some shitty snapfit AoBR boys and riding across the field with a box filled with flamers
>>
>>47835195
i was doing a watered-down shade on the red, it was wet when i took the pic. it's dried now, but it pooled and fucked up, so i'm going to try another wash and after that, i'll highlight it. the sword i'm going to do the detailwork in a gold.

i picked up that retributor gold paint, and it's amazing to use after trying to layer up to a consistent gold through the other paints.
size comparison of the model again for anyone interested.

Seems there's just scum in the hobby. My local redshirt tells me on average two sets of clippers disappear from the painting area each week.
>>
>>47835207
Been playing since second ed man. I already have about 30 of the metal burnas.
What I don't have is lootas.
>>
>>47835210
You've got to apply it really sparingly in many layers otherwise you're just hoping the surface tension and capillary action is kind to you.

He's a good termi size.

Not sold on the weird little arms on the dread looking thing.

Why isn't there a wip general op image with based Duncan as the emperor?
>>
>>47835281
yeah, the bigga boy is a bit silly. I was hoping they'd be good primarch stand-ins, but theyre just lil' boys in big armour.

but for $9AUD i figured it's worth it just to paint for fun

>9 dollarydoos

Nice, are they from a particular company? I wouldn't mind having a look at what they've got.

Grabbed a ka-bu-ki steel knight to convert into an iron father during the combat company sale last week.
>>
>>47835398
the mini is from Scibor miniatures, some euro-based company. that model usually goes for i think 35 euro, but my local shop is clearing them so everything is under cost. the painted one I posted i snagged two of for a dollar fifty each.

Because until now, that had never occurred to me. See, I already did the one with him as Ollanius Pius; he seemed like more of a regular guardsman who, through his heroic action, should be revered as a saint.

That, and I could crop and rotate his head to fit the flag pretty well.

so I'll say this for cheapo jewfag acrylic paints being used for painting miniatures:

1) light colors suck. Like green, flesh colors, beige, etc. Shitty coverage. For painting faces, I'll probably invest in some good quality flesh colors.

2) dark colors like black, brown, etc. are great. awesome coverage, but they don't water down to make great washes because when you water them down, then they start to get patchy. I'll probably also invest in a good quality black and brown ink/wash.

3) metallics are nice. Work perfect. good coverage, work for drybrushing, etc.

Overall, I'm happy. You're not gonna be winning any competitions, and I can definitely tell the difference in paint from when I was using Citadel ones years ago, but if I knew someone was just starting out and wanted to buy lots of paints, I'd totally recommend it. For a beginner who isn't going to be painting eyeballs and blood veins, they are fine, especially for army-level paint jobs.

Now, my real motivation for getting back into the hobby is Epic Armageddon. For those 6mm minis, I'll probably have to buy good paints, because the minis are so fine and small. But I might be able to use these to paint the titans and vehicles.
>>
>>47835842
That reminds me a whole lot of the dad from that 70s show.
>>
question for everyone.

Can anyone recommend any decent, no-frills 28mm skeletons that dont have any extra bits on the models? I'm thinking of doing a terrain/diorama bit, of a graveyard that's being eroded by river/flooding, and some of the graves have been washed open.

just not sure whats available in the way of really plain simple skeletons that'll work for that purpose, I've not done any modelling for donkeys' years.

>>
>>47837476
The heads need more shadow to give them definition.

Sadly though white undercoat is much easier to work from it really robs you of a lot of the nice shadow and definition. It's almost as much work to go back and add it as it is to work up to bright colours from a black base.

There's a skull in a circle on the transfer sheet for Space Marines.
Unless the new ones look different, but seeing as those are the 2nd/3rd edition termies, I figure you should have a few spares of the old transfersheets.

The icon is in black, but you could apply it and paint over it in white. You'd just have to add the spikes around the circle to finish the halo of the icon.

If you want to freehand it, just draw a circle, put a little box underneath for the upper jaw and add two smaller circles/triangles for the cheekbones on each side where the circle and the box meet.
Then just paint the eyes and the nose on top of that.

Also take a look at these guys. >>47837384

>>
>>47838211
You can still see the auto gun mechanisms. You should trim those down and fill in the ejection hole if you really want lasguns.
>>
>>47838583
Platoons worth. With heavy weapons.
They'll make sweet ally units.
>>
>>47837840
>>47838583
That's a really nice conversion.
Definitely looks convincing.

If you want to avoid doing that for a cohort of conscripts or something like that you can also get 3rd party bits for desert themed armies.
i don't mean to imply you should stop converting or anything like that, just wanted to point out the option. Puppetswar also have heads like that.
>>
When do you guys apply your transfers/decals? Before or after washes/highlights? the final thing before the model is 'finished'?
>>
>>47838839
I'd just leave them with the guns as-is.

Of the gajillions of guard regiments out there, I'm sure some still use autoguns. They also look cooler. Fits with them being like desert-warriors or insurgents or whatever

I've also asked in the Warmachine general and gotten nothing, and I probably should have started here in the first place:

I'm putting together a Convergence Axiom. It's my first Colossal, and I'd like to do something special with it. Just a little conversion to set it apart from all the other Colossals that are built exactly the same way. Any ideas?
One person recommended having another faction's Warjack dead and dragging by one of the Axiom's tow cables, but I was thinking more a change to the model's actual look rather than just an extra bit of flavor.

Why do GW paints dry so fast? I can't even paint before it's dried up. Vallejo stays liquid for ages while Citadel dries up on my brush. The only Citadel paint I like are their reds since the other citadel paints are faulty. I'm looking forward to my order of new Vallejo paints and a new set of brushes that aren't from GW. Everytime I paint with GW products there's a 50% chance the miniature will either look good or like shit.

I am not going to lie, at one point during the paint I thought, "hey, that looks kinda like lava. neat."
water would flow directly over those drainage grates that are the most heavily rusted.
I do appreciate your input, but that of course means I will address those criticisms.
I would image relatively ancient trenches left to the harsh elements would be pretty heavy rusted over in it's entirety.
Make sure to comment again once I post after the washes have been applied.

it's quite messy, especially on the backpack. consider going back and touching up where the paints gone where its' not meant to.
Also it looks like you didn't prime the model first either, you'll get a better coverage if you do.
>>
>>47845641

Appears to be primed in white. No highlights or washes. Paint not even remotely in the lines. Could be good eventually but right now it's solidly in the shit tier

Nice and clean, good colours, perfectly playable! I'd be happy to play against him!

For things to work on next, I'd look at adding some highlighting - just some sharp lines on the edges of armour plates, and the icon on his backpack. (helps him stand out on the table) If you've not done much before, maybe practice on some regular guys first (simpler models to correct if you go too far).
Highlighting really brings out the details in the moulding, and once you've got the hang of it, is a strong, fast technique to improve your models.

I'd also highlight /Drybrush (carefully) some lighter grey onto the base to draw out the texture.

thin your paints with a little bit of water on your pallet

>Implying I even have a game right now

>>47845147
Some washes might help. The thing is, sure, "pure" rust is that color. But these grates are deep in the mud. It's going to be sludgy and muddy and bloody water that's flowing into those grates. You're going to get a much darker corrosion kinda thing going on.

idk, just when most people think trenches, they think "mud", not "rust". Like that rust is fine, but it needs a fuckhuge thick layer of mud and grime layered on top of it.
>>
After testing stripping with super clean and an ultrasonic cleaner my findings are that as dangerous as it is to work with, super clean is pretty much the ideal solution for stripping paint with an ultrasonic cleaner

a few hours of soaking and 30 minutes of ultrasonic and simple green took a ton of scrubbing to get 75% of the paint off

a few hours of soaking and 30 minutes of ultrasonic, models came out pristine bare plastic, no scrubbing needed.

It is not even tabletop quality, basecoating is not enough, he didn't even wash and drybrush, that would have been lazy. But what he did is not even a finished model. He didn't put any effort in it and he didn't even try to cover it up. He butchered the models.

These two will argue over anything.

I wouldn't because irl i follow irl rules, on the internet i am anonymous and vent without following them. Also you seem to be confusing the tone of a post with how constructive it is, as you said the other anon said kind of the same things as i did, the fact that i was mad doesn't make my post less informative. I honestly think the eldar are on par in terms of quality with the deldar just being a bit more messy but fine none the less

I'm not amazing, but I consider myself above-average, at least back when I was painting a lot. Haven't painted minis in a long time other than re-starting in the past days. I'll try and get some pics of my best ones.

I apparently have a few touchups to do.

hey just keep it up, and you'll keep improving
>>
>>47848158
so, the problem I had with this mini was the shape of it made it a pain in the dick to prime with a spray can, since so much was sheltered, so my blobby Bones mini ended up slightly blobbier from the primer, and then looked like that after just enough base coat that I wasn't seeing the the primer color anymore (applied a couple times thinnly as needed) and then a thin styling color (the naggaroth night on the skirt for example) and then a wash to try and blend the colors and give it a nice hue.

And it still just kind of looks messy

Ignoring that I just kind of threw in the towel on the shield and like an idiot forgot to paint the neckline of his armor

Related question, anyone got a good tutorial for painting burns? As though the shield had been hit by firebreath?
>>
Are you supposed to add a bit of soap when doing washes? A website said to add a bit of soap to your water to break up surface tension but when I apply a wash the corners of paint on the figures seem to come off a bit (I suspect the soap is responsible)

The armour looks black instead of metallic but his cloak/cloth/ skirt looks fantastic. Both the base color and the edge color and the wash look amazing on it
>>
>>47848356
I was thinking of trying to drybrush some runefang silver onto the armor to give it a bit of shine while still looking dark, because I kind of like the black armor, but yeah, not quite enough metallic to it.

Also, fuckin' thank you man, eases the heart to know I've made progress since staring two weeks ago.

Maybe, but let me ask you this, anon: are you handling the miniature while you paint it?

What you really need to do is mount the model on something, and handle it only by that thing, taking all precaution not to touch the model wiff yer grubby mittz as you work. If you think soap can be detrimental, I guarantee you the combined action of friction from your fingers and the oil from your skin will rub that stuff right off.

I posted this picture of the old "Space Marine Captain with Terminator Honours" that was the basis for Captain Centos in our last thread as an example of how to mount a model on something to handle it by - in this case, using blue-tac to stick his base to the lid from a medicine bottle. It's also an example of rubbing paint off when I was careless though, too; can you see the bare metal on the side of his helmet?
>>
>>47848529
I'm the same anon from the last thread and got some poster tack (ended up being too sticky but I used it anyway) for my guardsmen and mounted him on an old pill bottle for painting. I admit I might I've picked him up once or twice when cleaning my desk but when I was painting I'm pretty sure I didn't touch him

So I tried to make a ministorum minister/priest.

thoughts?

>>47848529
I may be a scrub, but I want to vouch for hemostats. Clip onto the edge of the base, hook it, fantastic control of the orientation.

May cause slight damage to the base.
>>
>>47848648
the head doesn't really scream priest to me, I like the pose you've got going on though.
>>
>>47848529
Shit, I've been touching my models so much.

How should I clean them up before priming them? Warm water with dish soap?
>>
>>47848684
I agree, it was the only head I had that was suitable. when I get a more suitable one I will replace it.

GOD DAMN

Is there any reasonable way to strip this bitch without destroying the dragonhead? I actually like how the dragonhead turned out but JESUS.

This is what i get for trying to paint her more naked than the model was designed.

>How should I clean them up before priming them? Warm water with dish soap?

Honestly, if you haven't primed yet, I find that step unnecessary ... except in the case of resin/Finecast models. There is inevitably mold release somewhere (perhaps all over!) on the resin models that will mess with your paints when you least expect it, but for metal or plastic, it's never really been a problem for me.

Damn, CAPTCHA... again with the store fronts? Give it a rest!

If he is then he should know that GP5 filters are often asbestos, you'd prob be safer just breathing the resin tbqh familia
>>
>>47848796
You seem half way handy with greebstuff. Why not cut the hat off and sculpt some wild looking hair?
>>
>>47849304
Its not that hard to switch the filter for a modern one. Still cheaper then buying a respirator specifically for paint. Literally any mass produced milsurp gasmask will do, I only mentioned GP5 because its what I've got. [/spoiler] little bit of asbetosis never killed anyone
>>
>>47849453
Fair enough, I have one too, but because I'm an ausfag it cost more to import it than just to buy a respirator at bunnings, also I dont think the russians gave much of a fuck about health and safety at the time.
