When you RP in a setting like Warhammer 40k, which has serious situations like killing off entire worlds to stop a hive fleet and comedic ones like "Da red wunz go fasta!" do you like focus more on the serious aspects, the comedic ones, or both?

Never take yourself too seriously or risk falling into edgy territory. However, a grim and serious campaign usually provides the best or most memorable jokes when there's an unexpected moment of comedic relief to ease the tension.

Take a moment to remember just how grimdark the comedic things truly are.

Orks are truly terrifying when properly looked at as a regenerative, literally unstoppable mutant fungus that know only war and bloodshed as something classified as "Fun".

Easy Black Comedy.

This is a setting that has a planet full of Rambos,a cowardly commissar who is considered a hero and a daemon who constantly rides a motorcycle though hell. While at the same time is one of the scariest scifi settings to live in.

I try and harness the unique ability the 80s had of being able to do both in many genres. Never go full in any direction. Don't forget the "fun" in the setting but also the scale and terror of it all.

To me the perfect campaign has the same tone as pic related. Really, Really, Balls tinglingly oppressive and dangerous, but also quite funny at times

Orks are not comedic to anyone outside of their own race. They are saying those things in their own gutteral tongue while biting heads off of screaming civilians. To thousands of worlds, the Orks are quite literally the coming of the apocalypse.

Sadly almost descriptions of them make them sound like generic orcs from some fantasy world.

Then read Engine of Mork and Evil Sun Rising. Certainly a match for Deff Skawdron in terms of writing and a good deal darker too.

Full, 100% unapologetic action movie is the only way to go with 40k. Encourage your players to make one liners whenever they do something particularly weird or cool, make the villains so over-the-top evil that it borders on parody, make your heroes so larger than life you can't help but get wrapped up in the absurdity of it all.

This is a setting where your genetically enhanced tacticool operators stop to pull out chainsaws because they don't just want to kill their enemies, they want to send a message. USE that.

Or it's because 95% of their enemies are going to get into melee range with them no matter what, and anything short of full-body mutilation is unlikely to stop them.

>Doktor Eldrid a former mechcanicus scientist has been turned to the dark ways
>He is now using his brilliant mind to turn planets into his own mad science playgrounds
>Its up to Commissar Hawk and his ragtag bunch of Imperial guardsman to save the planet Hermes V from destruction
>Commissar Hawk some call his plans unorthodox but this is what landed him the the Imperiums "Melting pot" company
>An Ogyrn with a heart of gold but dont get him angry or else
>His best friend is the Catachan sniper who has his sights set on Commissar Hawk more than the heretics
>A disgruntled Veteran a medic hailing from Cadia who has seen more action those who lead them has a pessimistic attitude but still cares for the men he serves with
>and having served with the Death Korps of Kreig this Grenadier may lack emotion but his sheer devotion to the emperor puts him in more danger than the squad wants

Cheesy 80s like 40k movie when?
