This setting is about a struggle to protect the World Tree, which is actually a pretty regular-sized tree. Every one of the World Tree's defenders knows that the Tree is important, but they disagree on why. Some fo them claim it holds up the sky or stops the ground from blowing away, or stops the air from growing too impure. The guy on the wolf-horse wants to log the tree to make a piano, which he believes he will be able to play to magically cure disease.

The world was ascending into a wondrous enlightenment, natural philosophers were delving into the deepest secrets the world had to offer. Riches untold were the shares of the world's vast growing cities, the cosmos was offering up its secrets to the fearless leaders of secret-seekers. Society across the world was being hurled from squalid barbarism to global mastery faster and faster with each passing generation. It was a wonderful time to be alive.
But then, one day, the snow started falling.
And it never stopped falling. All attempts to melt it led to destructive floods, the salt used on roads actually froze, crops withered into brittle black stalks and bulbs and the cities began to buckle under the pressure of the snows. The sky was a filthy grey smear and the sun seemed to be hidden behind more and more layers every day. Humanity retreated ever upwards into the remaining towers and mountain peaks to watch the snows follow.
Generations passed and the enlightenment became an old story. Out of necessity and desperation, expeditions carved out tunnels through the ice into the frozen, night-black cities far below. One day, the mountains shook and there came swarming out of them countless millions of winged dragons, whose fire burnt away the ice - burnt it into flaking ash. Their flames freed up the skies and sunlight began to hazily burn through the clouds. But they also stood in defense of the tunnels men made into the frozen cities below and wouldn't dare let any pass into them.
The truth of the matter is humanity did something back in the enlightenment to bring about the snows and the dragons are there to make sure they don't do it again, so they stop men from going into the old cities and replicating their mistakes. But they're also there to combat the ice and things from the tunnels which sometimes emerge and make men curious to seek out their source. Every human habitations has a guardian dragon. Some obey its wishes to remain above, some don't.

Gods from another dimension invade your world, using Vortexes that pop up wherever there is a concentration of magic, such as in cities with magic universities, great temples and sites of battles where magic was used a lot. These gods claim your world once belonged to them, but they were cheated of it by the current gods.

There are now only legends left of the world of the past. Glorious enlightment,discoveries and cultures matter as much as the wind howling among the ruins howling among the ruins of the older civilisations.
The first sign of the world's agony was the Mist. It came from nowhere and was seemingly everywhere.It devoured city after city,forest after forest. It took many lives of this unaware what is happening.
Then came the worms and plagues. They devoured the trees,the crops,the plants. Few who still remained where left hungry
The crumbling of the reality itself was next. Entire tectonic plates started falling down to the dark Abyss,where no creature lives. Yet some still survived,in their cities of stone and bone. Using magic and technology of old the profane monsters live on, their fortresses keep the world from falling down.
As their final punishment gods took the sun down and sent their servants to hunt down these who still crawl in the dark.
Yet the creatures have not given up yet,they have captured the deamons of light and used them to illuminate their dark setttlements.

Throughout the known planes of existence lie the tunnels.
What at first seems a giant empty stone tubes become passageways to other worlds with the offering of life. Some will accept something as basic as a freshly picked flower, while others require mass sacrifice. This comes from the temperament and morality of the spirits who watch over and control the tunnels.
This system connects the otherwise unreachable realms to each other, creating both trade and conquest.
