Chess problems thread. Other board game problems also welcome.

If you post solutions, please do it in spoilers.

kxe1 is key. At that point, the only moves black can make are to shuffle the queen between a1 and a2. March your pawn up to h8, promote to a knight, and then take the pawn on c4, follows by the rook on b3 when the queen is on a1 for mate.

That was a pretty easy problem, wasn't it? I started with it for the visual impression, though. The thing that might trip up some solvers is that you have to promote the pawn to a knight.

a lot of variations, but I think

1 Rh7 wins

If ... Rxe7
2 g7, Re8
3Rh8 and black has to give up the rook to stop the pawn from queening.

If Kf6, again g7 with similar results.

Here's a puzzle of my own, an oldie but fun. White to play and win

Correct. I looked at >>47460425 for a while and came up with the incorrect guess of moving the rook down the file to somewhere like F1 and moving it behind the knight's pawn.

Kb7
If Rb5+ then Kc8
Now tell me why I'm wrong.
>>
>>47461655
if Kb7, black just plays Rc5 and can draw at will by trading the rook for the pawn.

Let me try again.

c7
If Rd6+ then Kc5

Half the fun of this thread for me is using algebraic chess notation.

>>47461804
if Kc5, then Rd1. Now if you queen the pawn, Rc1+ and you lose, and if you step your king off the file, he still plays Rc1 and forces a draw.

I think I'll give up on that chess problem for now.

Here's an easy directmate problem.
