Tolkien's Elves were similar to pre-Anglo-Saxon celts in a sense. I think their whole deal was them being a metaphor for the passing of Britain's celtic linguistic roots into legend to be replaced by the rapidly expanding Germanics (Men in LoTR are obviously Anglo-Saxon horsemen)
