What chess set is this? Its basically a big one like a table with it on it that you can play with a friend with.

Yes, it is very common practice. In fact, I too used to do it. My friends once tried to dispense of the black ones, but his mother (to whom the whole thing belonged) swiftly realized what was going on and mated him on the back rank.

the board lifts out, underneath there's a space with slots for each of the pieces, and you can flip the board over to make the table just look like a regular table
