I've been working on this off and on for about three and a half years (mostly off, obviously.) It's going to be a photo board for Dystopian Wars models when it's finished, but now that I'm finally down to the painting stage my airbrush is crapping out on me. Anybody have experience with Grex or Harder and Steenbeck units?

C'mon son
>>
>>47163397
Not bad at all, nice weathering on the legs, but the axe and the eyes are a tad weird and thick. The green of the axe was not a good choice of color imo, makes it weird with the whole of the model. Some dark iron would have been better I believe.
The eyes could do with a glaze or at least a tiny dot of white.
Since you want to do them blue, I suggest you read the guide to paint space marines that is in the OP, particularly the Raven Guard part. They have blue eyes as well IIRC, so you can just replicate the method.
Highlights on the inside of the blade of the axe, near the shaft are a wee bit too thick. Migjt be the picture but it seems like almost all the edges of your model are pretty rough. Is it a recast?

Overall, not bad at all, it's just that such a close up make those bad details pop up a lot. Hope that helps.

Hey guys, I'd like to start working on a very easy table: a green rug and a few hills, rocks and trees. Where could I find a green mat about the size of GW's former one? I only seem to find ones about 1x0.75m or huge 3x1m ones...
>>
>>47163944

How the fuck is that relevant to anything? Like we can't objectively call her bad at her job without being as good a painter as her somehow?

Even if she had skills like Rembrandt, I still wouldn't be able to sit through an entire video of hers on the basis that she is extremely annoying to listen to.
>>
>>47164010
That argument I can understand. Objectively, I prefer to listen to Duncan, but someone calling someone else bad when he's not as good as the other is just hypocritical.
And ffs, is it so hard to understand that maybe Duncan wants to be left alone a bit and paint whatever the hell he wantsnto, and not do tutorials all the time? Shit takes time yo.

From what we've seen she's been helping him for quite some time now. She was probably behind the camera beforehand and offered or was offered to do some stuff as well. Why would she turn it down? It's a nice experience for someone to have to do something in front of a camera semi-professionally.
Also, chill out dude, putting one woman in the hobby is not blatant crazy 3rd wave feminism. There are some rare female creatures that are into painting tiny plastic soldiers, just like men.

>>47164104
Well shit, I don't know about you, but if someone does my job better than me, I'm not gonna go "Ha! Look at everything you still did wrong!" But rather "Damn, let's see how that person did to try do a bit closer to that quality of work next time."

>>47164117
You'll notice that I didn't say he was shit at painting. I invited him to prove that hz was better than her. As I explained above, I belive saying someone's shit at something when you're not capable of attaining half the result the criticised get to, is a tad hypocritical. Just my humble opinion though.
>>
>>47164219
The ability of the critic means nothing, just their ability to vocalise it. It's simply a personal attack, i.e. ad homniem tu quoque. You could easily have asked why he didn't consider her to be a good painter, but instead you went for an off topic attack on his character. Even if he were shit at painting, worse than the target of his criticism, it would literally mean nothing if the critique itself was sound.

Your position is basically a red herring.
>>

So it's JUST a coincidence that they chose an obese half-chink woman with a downsey face and an annoying voice to be the new face of the company? Just like the new London mayor immediately removing whitey from places of power and painting ALLAH IS THE BEST over the entire public transport system?

They could have gotten someone with a better voice or just give her a voice over and keep her off camera, but no, that would not have been a big enough fuck you to the customer base.

Not everyone and not always. For bright yellow, red, or white, a black undercoat would an the exception. It would certainly make your task more challenging.

Not that it *can't* work. Check out these White Scars. They were undercoated in black.
>>
>>47167770
you do what is appropriate. white, black, grey, brown, cream, etc.

depends on the colour palette, cool or warm profile, etc.

brown is good for yellow.
grey is good for red.
etc.

I always prime white. Anything else is honestly just going to waste slightly more time. It's easier to paint black over white than the reverse.

Always is a very, very dirty word here.

I recommend picking your priemr based on what you itnend to put over it.

A big prob was the basecoat was really thick; I has trouble completely coating the pieces, so oversprayed trying to get all the spots. Any secret techniques to combat this, or is it just practise?

I also have some of my High Elves from back when kicking around, if anyones in the mood for some THIN YOUR PAINTS content. Post?

Did you assemble before priming? That will make getting to the hard to reach places, well, hard. Try either partial assembly (e.g head, torso, legs), priming on the sprue, or just each individual piece.

Gotta work on that white anon. Looks good on the cloak, but a bit thick overal. Think your paints you not-heretic

>This is perfect thanks a lot.
>I knew i could count on you

Y'know, I (>>47170077) thought I was being helpful - I have a pretty thorough knowledge of old Citadel Space Marines and some of the Specialist Games - and that Black Ark just jumped to the forefront of my mind when you said "dragon skull" ... but the only one I can find on eBay is going for 85 quid!

The new plastic Vampire Counts zombie dragon/Terrorgheist probably won't give you what you're looking for. I've seen the bitz, and they don't seem like they'd fit at all.

Poking around on eBay, I found a few skeletal dragon models, like this one made by Reaper (it's even metal!), but even with the substantial reduction in price, I don't know how economical a purchase like this would be unless you can recast the head.
>>
>>47170325
Took all the pieces off the sprue except the heads (they roll around), no assembly before priming. It doesn't help that I have shaky hands. I thin by between 0-50% depending on the paint.

>no assembly before priming

Putting together part of the model before you prime, like >>47170325 said, should help you tremendously. These ladz, for example, are mostly just torso and legs. The metal beekee heads aren't attached, and the arms are only glued on when the fit was necessary or I knew that what they'd be carrying (like a shoota held tightly across the chest) would interfere with my being able to paint the body details.
>>
>>47170530
Huh, interesting. See, I didn't assemble because in the past it just made painting the arms/torso crazy difficult; every time I tried to correct an error, I'd just make another one. For EG, how do you go about painting the inner arm/side of torso when the arm is in the way, restricting the angles?
>>
Alright, I have deconstructed my multi-armed Daemon Prince of Tzeentch in order to rethink and rePURPOSE his limbs and the replace his head with something more... substantial.

So here he is taken apart, and the 3 head options removed from their Bones bodies. I am actually leaning toward the middle one at this paint.

I have also salvaged the bottom portion of their torsos to potentially use as Tzaangor Chaos Cultists later on.
>>
>>47170807
>For EG, how do you go about painting the inner arm/side of torso when the arm is in the way, restricting the angles?

I would glue *part* of the model to its base - legs, torso, and head - and then test the fit of the arms and shuriken catapult *without* gluing them. I would paint that part, then do the arms and gun separately and attach them later.

With something as spindly as those weedy little xenos, you're going to have to be careful gluing the shoulders to the torso. Use a pin or toothpick to apply the glue in tiny amounts to void getting it on the parts you already painted.

>What one was that?

Lazarus Games in Marysville, Pennsylvania has one for sale in a lot of three with two other models.

I doubt it's a recast, that's the reason I posted it. This shop does a *ton* of trade on eBay, and I imagine items like this are taken in at a brick and mortar location for store credit, then sold on eBay to make up the difference. Look at his other items. Look at his feedback. Look at his sold items. If these are recasts, he likely didn't make them himself and probably wouldn't know it if someone else passed them off on him.

The reason you have to watch out for models that are inexplicably primed and based is that recasters will frequently do this to hide imperfections that might otherwise give them away. Watch those guys, though, and you'll see that they frequently have lots of hard-to-find models available. Then check back after those are sold... and you will often see the *same* models for sale again a short time later. The cleverest of these ladz will even make the auctions private to discourage your checking the history of what's been bought and sold by whom.

I didn't think it was worth wasting our post count (even if it *is* Johnny) defending my find before, especially since I have all three of the models in the picture and really didn't feel like paying that much for more duplicates.

If you're absolutely dyin' ta own it, the item number with the Johnny here is 401114362975.

If it's not too busy, you could go for a kind of Kali approach, with several discrete arms instead of the ones you did earlier which split at the elbow.

Actually, try sketching on paper what you want first. That way, you can try to find out if it gets too busy and muck about with poses. It doesn't need to be more than stick figures, but it might help.

I guess you could also pose the arms out a bit more, and if you paint them bright and the wings dark (maybe dark blue with stars like the tops of >>47171289), they'll act as an impressive backdrop.

>>47171674
Just because Fantasy is dead doesn't mean you have to shelve your models. There are multiple WHFB-like systems that have almost identical factions, as well as being able to use the elves in AoS.

As for washing:
>The ink is pretty thin, but depending on how much coverage you want you can thin it more to get it to behave differently.
>Apply a fair amount, but again how much you apply depends on the look you're going for. The more you have, the darker the model will be post-wash.
>Don't dab off the excess, I find that that mostly just makes things streaky and gross. At best you can use a brush to absorb the wash that's in the wrong spot, but it'll still tint the paint to some extent.

Surprisingly I didn't airbrush this part of my space endeavour as it was a last minute decision. the base is a 50/50 mix of black/incubi darkness with a dry brush flick of white paint for the wee stars. I use one of those cotton stick things with very thin/dark shades to gradually dab on and build up to stronger colours then added some bigger stars.

Airbrush will be the best and easiest way. Right now I'm using an Iwata HP-BCS and a Silent-Aire Scorpion 2. The compressor is kind of a piece of shit- it doesn't put out much pressure and has no regulator or tank. I've had the Iwata for about a decade, and for at least the last half of it it's been refusing to feed paint consistently. I'm looking at replacing it with either a Grex Genesis XG or XGi or an H&S Infinity. I'm also in the market for a new compressor, but there I have less of a clue as to what I want. How's ease of disassembly and cleaning on yours? Have you found any particular problem areas?

You don't need room to airbrush. If you have a small tabletop that lets you paint miniatures, you can airbrush.

You just need a window that's close to the table.

Then you buy a pre-made portable spraybooth with air vent hose. I'm sure your apartment can fit a table and a 1x1 cube.

There is nothing wrong with having standards. If FW wants to sell a premium product, they should damn well make sure that the most fragile pieces are packaged in a way that makes it so that they come intact. I can certainly afford Forgeworld models, but it is easy to see that they are more expensive than mainline GW models, which are well engineered to the point where they don't come damaged.

So this is maybe wip related? I want to start fielding knights, but I don't have the money to buy them individually or in that boxed set yet, but I do have a fuck ton of legos, so I built my own. I'm not quite pleased with the curve of the carapace, so om working on a way around that, and I'm digging through my bins to coordinate colors.

So am I missing anything? Would you mind too terribly playing against it? I've cleared it with my friend but I don't want it to look like ass
>>
>>47176741
so dont field them yet?
>>
>>47176741
You've cleared it with your friend, which is what matters.

I personally wouldn't want to play your proxy knight for more than a couple of games as you tried to work out if it's good for your list before dropping the money on the model, long-term proxying is kinda lame.

Your compressor might be the issue then. You need a tank, valve and moisture trap on your compressor so it can put out consistent 10 - 20psi.
I have the infinity silver line and the AL-Plus. AL gets shit all over it from the mild chemicals I use to clean it so don't get one! Infinity is really easy to use and strip down. I recommend it.
Other thing it could be is your paint thickness. Better to be too thin than thick.

I spray on my table. I'll wear a mask if base coating or spraying large areas and open a window but for most of the work I do I spray tiny amounts and can see every bit of paint come out the tool.
You don't need a massive extractor.

So I have been considering a display project for this summer to give a better look for my army besides just sitting on the shelf when not being played.

Any good tutorials out there?

Ideally I want to make it so the bases are sunk in but this will be ~50-60 models I image.

Bonus Round: How would I make it look like dust is being kicked up by tires as if the army was rushing forward?

Ultranids Termagants.

Paint them in Ultramarines colors, Codex Astartes wise.

HH Death Guard and zombicide minis which I'm using as a plague zombie proxy. I'm a bit too poor for FW heads and shoulder pads but there is just so much extra shit on Blightking sprues that works well.

Seconding Ultranids. Been wanting to see how they'd look for a while now, don't feel like buying gants or Ultramarine paints to do it myself.

Mate, just save up to get a real knight. Shoot, if your friend is cool with it, split the Knight Renegade box between you two.

I'd hit it. Easily. 5/10 face on a 7/10 body, what is that, like a 6/10 total?
>>
Total fucking amateur here. I'm just starting on some Bolt Action French infantry and have been following guides on thinning paints etc but the minis i'm working on are metal. Should my first 2 coats on paint be streaky with parts of the undercoat showing up? do i just keep applying coat after coat?
>>
>>47179022

Lots of little thin coats is fine. If primer is poking through that means your coats are probably a little too thin but it's workable.

Woodland Scenics Snow for fluffy white snowbanks. Secret Weapon Miniatures Crushed Glass for slush and ice.

Accept no substitutes, especially not shit like baking powder, foam, or home improvement filler paste.

Metallics are harder to get a solid coat on. If you put them on top of another metallic or a proper color (grey for silvers and brown for golds) it's easier to get coverage and it looks better.

You can also just buy Citadel Base Balthasar Gold and Citadel Base Leadbelcher. Normally I wouldn't recommend GW paints but for this specific situation, they get the job done by providing a good metallic basecoat that has good coverage and helps further metallics that get put on top of it achieve better coverage.

I'd use Vallejo for the final top layer of metallics though. They look smoother than Citadel metallics.
>>
>>47179105
I second using Citadel's 'Base' series of metallics to lay a solid foundation and then brushing on Vallejo Model Air metallics for a sick-nasty finish.

I'm thinking, didn't we have one nice anon that made a pic basically compiling all the stuff that you need to start, as well as techniques, so that we could basically post it to whoever would be lost when starting?
