Call him something else besides a BArbarian, just use the Barbarian rules. Create an interesting, but succinct backstory (1-2 paragraphs) explaining why this elf is a barbarian. Come up with a clever/cool name in lieu of Barbarian.
Or hang your head and mope. If your GM has no legitimate opposition to this, you're good. if there is a valid reason then you just have to accept it.

If he thinks elves can't be barbarians, point to Wild Elves. Even a certain famous dual scimitar wielding drow had one level of barbarian mixed in his levels of fighter and ranger in 3e.
