getting treated like shit by just about everyone he met, and thus turned into an even bigger shittlord himself. I imagine you'd be pretty fucked up if you'd spent your entire early love being a peaceful, diplomatic freedom fucker and then discovering your Big Daddy E was as big a tyrannical asshole as your foster father.
Or he's a needlessly cruel, archaic fuckwit who enacted decimation on his Legion, and from there on in no one was safe under his command - everyone went into the meat grinder in some of the most grueling warfare in the Great Crusade. In the Iron Warriors, you are just a cog in the machine, and as expendable as a bolt shell.
Or maybe he's neither of these things. Point is, nobody fucking knows because no two authors can make up their fucking minds about him.
