So I asked about this on /tv/ but apparently I'm a faggot for watching star trek so I'll put it to you guys instead. I've been watching star trek: the next generation for a while now and one of the few things I don't get is how the holodeck works. I mean, in one episode they walk for what seems several miles but the room itself doesn't look bigger than 20 square metres. How does the holodeck work?!

To answer your question, treadmill-equivalent floors.

It changes based on the episode, so it's hard to say, really. It's a very inconsistent piece of technology, even by Trek standards.

The the physical holodeck is a set space, the world is essentially moving in relation to your position so I can only assume that >>47021875
applies as well so you could literally walk for infinity and never move from your spot

Are you familiar with the Danger Room from the X-Men comics?

Basically, hard-light holograms and regular holograms trick you into thinking you're moving closer or farther away from other people, you're constantly being held in a tractor beam that makes you run in place, etc.

I imagine Trek is something like that.

If I recall, its that the program adjusts itself as you walk in order to trick you into walking in circles.

Not sure how that works when you've got multiple people, but there you go.

I wonder if a treadmill floor would result in motion sickness for those not used to the illusion of movement.

I am guess you would have to have:
1. A larger Holodeck
2. Beam between holodecks (like instances in MMORPGs)
3. Only do holodeck simulations that keep you with close proximity i.e. you are all on a 19th century sailing ship
