These books were written by the dutch author Rien Poortvliet, if you search something like "Rien Poortvliet Gnomes" or "Rien Poortvliet Kabouters" you'll find a lot more. His books would make for a perfect setting, with all worldbuilding done already (they basically describe the entire life and culture of gnomes in our world)
