This is a thread created for the discussion of Quest threads, as well as sharing of advice and guidance for aspiring or current QM's. Posters looking for advice on tabletop games should look elsewhere.

Useful links: http://pastebin.com/x6BqaJ7r
This link contains numerous writing guides, general advice, and various quest tools and communities.

https://twitter.com/Eisenstern/lists/quest-runner-directory
This is a directory containing the tweets of most current QM's. While a twitter is by no means mandatory, it is a useful tool for both you and your players. If you are a QM, simply post your Twitter here to have it added to the directory. Spamming your quest twitter with non-quest related tweets may result in its removal from the directory.

IRC Channels:
[The Cabal] #QMC @ Rizon.net (slightly related to quests; enjoys worldbuilding, mechanics and politics)
[Hugbox] #ques/tg/enerals @ Rizon.net (barely related to quests; enjoys Larro quests and anime)

>QM
Do you think that subconsciously you project your fears and biases in your quest?

>Player
Have you ever cringed at something that your QM or other players wrote?
>>
> QM question

Well, yeah. How you think, feel, believe, and experience affects your b writing. How can it not?
>>
>>46882186
>Do you think that subconsciously you project your fears and biases in your quest?

I am fucking fearless.

Biases, though, oh yeah all the time
>>
>>46882186
>Player, Have you ever cringed at something that your QM or other players wrote?

Oh god yes, Its my job to shitpost not theres. If I need to be the serious one we have major issues. We had that issue with one of the lastest quests I was in.
>>
>>46882186
>Player
A lot actually, typically only when a QM is trying to be dramatic and it falls flat.

The other day in German Hollow Quest the QM started doing something and it really got me good
>>
>>46882186
>Have you ever cringed at something that your QM or other players wrote?

Yeah but then I got used to it. It is a strange feeling, but after using imageboards for years any emotions attached to comments progressively decline. Unfortunately, this also means my smile is gone for good.
>>
>>46882398
what was it? My only issue was waifuing Alex which is REALLY weird cause I see her as an adopted daughter.
>>
>>46882186
>QM

I usually subvert that by appealing to popular opinion. As far as likes and biases go. I haven't managed to put my fears in yet though.
>>
>>46882186
>Have you ever cringed at something that your QM or other players wrote?

Such defiance!

New Hong Kong - A city-wide planet corrupted to the core with a gang war between Yakuza groups in the underground tunnels, police brutality, fascist and communist organizations running wild, drug cartels and crime lords ruling the streets. You were born and raised on this backwater planet that's more of a festering wound upon the galaxy than anything else. You're a seasoned Merc who has been able to make a name for himself on his home planet, but not much anywhere else. However, with the recent planet-wide martial laws imposed by the Federation, all orbital ships that doesn't have the authority, has been grounded.
There's no way to leave and with a price on your head for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, you need to get off the planet, ASAP.

Have there ever been quests that featured drug use or is /tg/ too sheltered for that?

Banished; Opium is common. MC has indulged occasionally. Dune Spice. "Religious" Herbs. Mind-Elevating bat guano flavored magic mush, and much more.

I've run some quests on a different board, in the medium of comics. I was considering taking a stab at it here. My past quest comics have been kind of chaotic, though; Players make liberal use of their scene edit options, to the point of absurdity. On this board, I thought something where the plots and setting were more structured might be a better fit. /tg/ is probably used to only having direct control over a single character.

In my other stuff, I picked suggestions based on my own flippant whims; Whichever ideas inspired me the most, or even just amused me. Is that appropriate here? I saw someone get accused of railroading for that once....

Also, any tips on dealing with the faster pace of this board combined with my full-time job when working in the slower medium of comics?

Seems like a short quest with a clear cut objective.

Subtly acquire a Fed ship or authentication codes to pass the blockade.

If your in a life or death situation and where a second thought wasted could result in your death

>>46882962
Your not thinking of 'what am I gonna do' its 'what is his next move after I block this one or dodge it' but I see your point on the matter.
>>
>>46882935
Was planning to already have a name for the MC since most character creations go to hell from what I've seen and there's no real "class system". You can use learn to use any weapons or tools you can get your hands on in one way or another.

>>46882951
Yeah, figured I'd do a semi-short quest with a very clear cut objective that might have an obvious solution, but it will turn out to be more difficult than anticipated and other opportunities/choices for a means to escape.

In my quest i plan to use visions to describe superpowers, but what kind of vision would a omnipath see?

The other two powers i've worked out are adaptive regeneration - symbolized by a ever growing and ever dying monster, and teleportation, symbolized by a bridge that connects to everywhere and nowhere all at once.

So it's supposed to be kinda surrealistic.

I'm thinking about making the pantheon of my quest be consisted of 6 gods based on greek deities with a small set of Dark Souls treatment.

So far, elves are a thing that are included within it, and I'm unsure if there should be a chaotic/demonic pantheon of sorts that have either a new branch of elven kind or an entirely different race all together, pherhaps as much taller humanoids with draconic features or just different hue and facial structure. I didn't really want to make them orc kind of any sort, but I'm not entirely sure.

First time around here, sorry if it's vague.

I think space battles are too hard, because I already have trouble visualizing fully three-dimensional combat, but I also wouldn't mind anyone giving me tips on a possible way to run mech combat on the ground.

Right now I'm thinking of tracking damage with points in each limb for the player character, and just dramatizing the NPCs
>>
>>46883877
Don't make them humanoid at all, doing that basically reduces in to "and the mother of all was REALLY hot", especially if they're supposed to actively join in the quest.

Instead, see Banished Quests take on gods, where the actual gods are more like "lol fuk u" and the smaller spirits are actually comprehensible to the normal man.
>>
>>46883907
well you know that opens up a whole field of min-maxing whatever armor they get right? Then fact in what the different ammo/weapon types have against the different types of armor.

>Have you ever cringed at something that your QM or other players wrote?
So very often.
>>
>>46883877
You have come upon this place only to be destroyed by your own efforts.

Never beg that thou advanced unwarned.

Welcome to Questing! Firstly, conflict within pantheons is essential for creating realistic mythologies. You don't nessarily require an opposing pantheon. The demon/chaotic can just be different or more violent interpretations of the "standard" pantheon or it can be the ones of previous cultures that were acquired along the way, as oft is the case with many historic pantheons. Especially of the Grecian variety, although I estimate you'd want your peoples to be less flippant than them who went through Gods like candied fudge.

>small set of Dark Souls treatment.
Doubly so because of this. If you mean fallen gods they'll need that sort of conflict in their history. If you mean the other interpretation of the DS gods then you already know what you must do.

But remember; the goal is for everyone to have fun!

>>
>>46882826
For some of them, I could. I dunno what's really interesting in writing it though. I never felt ever better than when I first tested MDMA. Literally never, the euphoria (>inb4 tip fedora) was so intense I still get shivers and tears coming up just writing about it. Is it possible to make my players feel that way without having known that effect? I doubt I have the skills, or will ever have them.

Literally the best night of my life.
>>
>>46883922
The thing is that non-humanoids was reserved for those who are really just antagonical to the general development of humanoid, though they are majorly underground or incredibly concealed, as the current lore states that all of the gods were basically warriors that embodied different aspects and concepts, and fended off those from the surface.

I would make it so that such chaotic/demonic pantheon is seducing this hypothetical new race instead of already being part of their general customs and culture due to the general behaviour of the other humanoid races being suspicious and paranoid due to their differences, and applying sanctions that halt their general developmen due to their worship of more morally questionable and ancient rituals within the older pantheon. Their faith wavers because of this and the above ensues.. Elves don't suffer this so harshly because their seclusion breeds a set of skills that are more benefitial than the other, and such retain a certain passivity towards mankind.

Hey anon thanks. You reminded me of something I had to ask.

Yo WQDT. I have a hypothetical question regarding resource management- not for civ quests.

Say you have three resources only acquirable through felled enemies or explored ruins, or from breaking down equipment. These resources are used for boosting abilities in separate paths and are not directly convertible for reasons of setting consistency.

What could they do with the leftovers they don't need?
So far I'm at a dearth with just "give 'em to companions," and "sell them for what you actually want." I'd wanted to think of something more clever, except it turns out I'm at a bit of wall in this matter.
>>
Should a cyberpunk quest have different alien races alongside humans or deal with androids, robots, and trans-humanism next to regular humans instead?

Players wanted to create supersmart villain manipulator

QM declared open chargen then kept vetoing name ideas, power ideas and supervillain name whilst calling the players idiots.
>>
>>46884288
>"sell them for what you actually want."
This could work. Let's say the players have 50 of a certain resource they don't need. Let them trade 50 of those resources for 25 of the resource they need. It's not a clean cut deal so they can't farm a specific material for super fast and easy upgrades, but it's enough to let them use the leftover resources.

>>
Would players be OK with the MC turning into a monstrous form when fighting? And i'm not talking about some cool kinda monster, i'm talking about literal eyes in the back of the head, mouth that extends back towards the neck and twisted arms and fingers with too many joints.

Or is this to off-putting?
>>
>>46884556
They'd better all have crazy names and powersets too
>>
>>46884492
First, it's going to be a quest about trying to escort a group of rebels to a neutral zone, so the actual mechanics will serve the narrative. But you're right, and as things go on I will allow for new parts to be found and bought, allowing for pretty OP stuff by the end

So, I had a question

I was thinking of cute nicknames people could remember some characters by. What kind of person comes to mind when you think the following nicknames:

Detective
Inspector
Doc

At least one of these will be a woman in her 20s, another a man in his 20s, and a guy in his 50s.

Opinions?
>>
>>46884612
Aw man, a huge part of my interest is naming suits and stuff. I really want to have a /k/ommando dude who gives his rig the edgiest name possible
>>
>>46884617
>>Detective
>Inspector
I wouldn't consider these nicknames
>>
>>46884610
The players can choose themselves. Have some plothooks prepared both ways, and leveling up your monstrous form gives you bonus to intimidation rolls while you become horrifying as fuck.
>>
>>46884660
Okay, sure, they're job titles, but I'm trying to match the name with the face.
>>
>>46884667
It might be quite complicated to think how it actually moves, which could be a challenge to immersion
>>
>>46884579
Sure. If it's used well.
>>
>>46884681
A nickname should really tell you something about an individual. It is either a statement about their personality or appearance, a pun on their name or an in-joke based on a past event. You want the name to give you an idea what kind of person they are. It isn't necessary to relate it to what they do.
>>
>>46884682
I'm thinking the legs are actually more reptile-like, and the rest of the body is monstrous, but for long distance travel the players can bend over and travel on all four legs, breaking open both flesh and bone while their body adapts to the new challenge and promptly regenerates into a new form suitable to the task.
>>
>>46884681
>>46884617
BRUH.

There is a minimum of 632,531 personality/name/character variations you've got with your current variables.

Why?

How about instead of casting a wide net you figure out what you really want the character to be, and then of how that character acts, and then of how that character would be perceived, and then of how their observers would think of nicknaming them. Much easier.
>>
>>46884419
thought you'd like it
>>
>>46882186
>QM
I try not to let my disdain for both sides of the political spectrum show. If anything, I try to make characters who represent both sides fairly nuanced and understandable fellows and not stereotypes of their beliefs.

As for fears, the only thing I've ever projected onto my players is a fear of sharks and drowning.

>Player
Spelling mistakes, grammar errors because I'm an English major. I don't kick up a fuss about it, though, since it isn't worth the time and effort. Other than that, I cringe at waifu arguments that the players get into.

As for QMs...the only time I got really, really irritated was when I had to wait upwards of an hour just for the QM to write a bad end for the sake of 'muh drama' and then reset to the 'checkpoint' where we saved. A colossal waste of time.
>>

In my personal experience, nicknames are never as clever or thought out as they are in media. Most of them are recalls to early childhood, or singular events. Like this guy I work with we call Yogi. It's literally just what his mom called him as a kid, for no other reason than he liked Yogi Bear.
>>
>>46884762

I did. I went to dinner, did my homework and played some vidya while waiting. And then when I came back, bad end. That I would be fine with if I didn't have to wait another long bit for both the players to make a new choice and the QM to spend another forty minutes writing.

>>46884834
I don't mind bad endings or resets. My only gripe was drawing it out unnecessarily. I would have been perfectly fine with "the monster wrecks your face. Everything hurts hurts hurts" fade to black, laugh and then move on.
>>
>>46884932
There's another guy we call Little Anthony, because he's massive but he has the same name as his dad, and was therefore at one point the smaller of the two, and now it's ironic. The point is that nicknames aren't that hard to come up with

Here's my solutions.

>fixed forms - PC must invest time (or XP) to develop new forms or techniques
>morphing takes time - the players can shift into whatever they want, but the effects might take a few rounds to kick in
>slow regeneration - regain HP every round of combat, but generally slower than you are damaged
>regeneration requires focus - you can fix your injuries with conscious effort, but you're open to attack
>regeneration requires fuel - you need to eat something to rebuild the meat you've lost, munching on soldiers helps to rebuild your hit points
All of these options should help keep things in check, pick as many as you need. The last one would be fun if the players are trying to maintain their humanity.

Aliens can fit in a Cyberpunk inspired setting just fine, so long as they're just a different breed of lowlife. Hell, Neuromancer implied the existence of alien AI at the very least at the end of the novel.

Though you are right in that at that point you're straying from the philosophical roots of cyberpunk and more just having yourself some neon space Noir action.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Nar Shadaa in Star Wars is a great locale and Prey 2 looked fucking amazing.
>>
>>46885830
I'm not saying you need to read it in its entirety, but if you're trying to get an idea for how to write combat it would behoove you to read some of the combat sequences.

That's one shitty combat system and way too complicated for the common player. It would only serve to turn players away than bringing them in.

>Are we talking Concentration Camp Supervisor Quest here, or more someone in one of those camps?
Manager. You'd primarily handle your team of quirky Nazi stereotypes, with a few recurring figures among the prisoners, like representatives. There'd be a few basic logistics exercises, and you'd have to keep up links with high command.

Your camp would be producing war goods, probably V2 rocket parts, and you'd receive money for doing so which could be used to further develop the camp.

The main role of the player is to handle crises that would arise disrupting the day to day running of the camp - stuff like planned insurrections, outbreaks of disease or a serial killer. The further into the war you get, the harder things are until every decision is a no-win situation. Gameplay would be mainly driven around character management, since your staff will have different ideas on how to approach a situation, and they wouldn't all get on. There'd be the potential for waifus, mainly because I think it could be hilariously disruptive to efficient management.

I'd probably run it on Akun.
