There are two kinds of violence.
The first one is the "childish curiousity" violence, which encompasses torture and "strong against the weak", the fight without any realy potential tangible consequences.
The second one is the brute "animalistic" violence. It embodies the fight for survival, the willingness to commit necessary atrocities just to survive.
Since time immemorial, we always rooted for the underdog. The gladiator fights in the Coliseum, the peasant uprisings going against the military, the underground fight clubs of the modern days.
There is something inherently beautiful in the fight of the underdog.
There is something inherently attractive in seeing a man fight against odds, to see the violence commited for the sake of it, to see it done professional and polite - after all, there is nothing more polite than takeing your opponent seriously, right?
Not dragging your feet when fighting with him.
That is what we call true chivalry and true sportsmanship.
Arbitrary rules have nothing to do with it, it's the fact that both opponents take each other seriously and fight for their very lives.

Revenge for the loss of his testicles.
On a basic level, the damaged remains of some ancient aliens every so often start to effect the location where they were destroyed and improperly disposed of, and can become like monsters. It falls to the group, as headed by two of the still living aliens, to find when and where this happens and properly deal with them. Supposedly there is a bigger danger to the planet itself, though my character doesn't really believe that and thinks it's the alien characters worrying too much, so just helps out with the usual alien remains cleanup or alien site maintenance, largely because he gets dragged along but also because he doesn't want people getting hurt if he can help prevent it.

At first it was for king and country. Was best friends with the royal family after saving their daughter and served in the royal guard.
Now it's for the complete genocide of a race of anthro creatures. GM had these things go around raiding towns, killing the men and taking the women. Then they'd drug them and impregnate them to increase their numbers. Due to some bullshit magic the babies were born and grew up in a matter of weeks. After a few towns were hit, they had an army of these things. Then they hit the castle at night. They killed the king and kidnapped the queen and her daughter. I was separated from the party and was left almost dead. After we got all healed up, we basically rallied who we could and led a scorched earth campaign against them. It took a month real time, but we managed to solid snake our way into a camp they were holding prisoners in. I was just to go in, and get them out while the party kept a look out/stole all their gold. I saw the queen and her daughter, along with a score of other women, all pregnant and drugged out of their minds. Their eyes were blank and they just laid there mouths open and bodies limp. Instead of trying to get them out, I granted them mercy by killing them. Then I stepped outside the tent and Leroy Jenkins'd the whole camp. I lost an eye, and the party was beat to hell. After I told them what I saw we made a vow to wipe that race off the face of the planet. Session ended there and GM was not pleased with my choice.

He's a master astropath and over 300 years old.
He's been serving on the flagship of a rogue trader dynasty for about a century now and has slowly worked his way to the center of the Ships vast political network.
He's known the current Rogue Trader and Archmilitant since they were children and has become rather protective of them.

Redemption and Guilt. His wife passed away from complications during childbirth and the baby survived. His other 3 children have grown up and married.
Without his wife he can't cope with the PTSD-induced nightmares about his time in the army and the battles he fought. He feels guilt about the people he's killed and the wars he's fought.
So he attached himself to a hopeless but noble cause because he strongly believes in doing the right thing. He figures that if he gets killed fighting to make the world a better place then the gods will forgive him (PTSD isn't understood in a medieval fantasy setting, he thinks he's being punished) and he can re-unite with his wife.
The rest of the party didn't know of course. They just thought he was a crotchety old man who was handy with a musket and a longsword. They recognized his old army uniform but figured he just liked fighting so went adventuring. They only found out his backstory after William made his heroic last stand holding a choke-point against the forces of the empire they're fighting against while the rest of the party escaped with the imprisoned freedom fighters.he survived and managed to escape, returning 3 sessions later to become one of the leaders of the rebellion. After we conquered the capital and overthrew the evil emperor William came to terms with his past and was able to return home and spend the rest of his days with his family. I honestly didn't intend for him to survive and that heroic last stand was supposed to kill him. Still the best character I've ever played

It didn't work, of course. He died a complete failure. And even then, he didn't manage to die right. So whatever passes for life goes on. A new party arrives and their first question is always "What's with the servoskulls?"
The answer is always:
"Ohh, look. More new acolytes. Suppose we should learn their names before we fit them with machine spirits?"
They rarely react well but they'll be quiet soon. Quiet save for their hover drives and the voices only I can hear.
