The Gitgud Frog Edition

Why is red now an F-tier color? How much have you spent adapting to the new meta? Do you think allies in BFZ and OGW were a good idea or an attempt at forcing decks? Find out on this edition of the standard general!

I'm running R/W allies with equipment, and G/W clues/ Westvale shenanigans. The only problem is splitting my good white cards between the two (i.e. which one gets the three copies of Always Watching I have)
>>
I got a random question, can't find the answer anywhere basically what I want to know is can a card that says "Add one mana of any color to your mana pool." add colorless/waste mana? Or does it have to be one of the established 5?
>>
>>46843526
It cannot, because Waste is specifically colorless.

Alright lads I got a story for ya.

>Playing at local shop
>New guy shows up with a girlfriend, both sit down and get to playing
>Girl is borrowing decks n stuff from guy, I'm up against her first
>She picks mono-g elves against Angel BR
>Terrible opening hand (Literally all land) but keep it to see what might happen.
>She starts rolling out elves, but isn't attacking
>Literally made all of her elves 3/3s, but keeps only attacking with one while giggling
>Draw new Chandra, not enough mana to play her
>Suddenly draw new Nahiri, play her since no other options
>She ignores her, keeps swinging with her one elf to try rubbing it in
>Nahiri hits 8
>Nahiri into Sol Ring (Lol) into Chandra into -4
>Play Elspeth turn after
>Draw pic related a few turns later
>GG

I think I made her mad.

>>
>>46841542
>do you think allies were a good idea

No.

There's a reason that Allies have only appeared in four sets. In Zendikar block, they were shitty Slivers. You could figure this out by comparing Harabaz Druid (a rare) to Gemhide Sliver (a common better than the aforementioned rare).

In Battle For Zendikar block, the Allies all seemed weird to me. Most of them don't actually mention being Allies, and none of the eight Ally rares that actually mention Allies read very well.
>>
>tfw your kitchen table games are getting competitive enough that people are talking about buying singles to get four ofs and people actually want to start going to fnms
I don't know the power level of my local store but I can see some dreams getting crushed in the future.

Drafting should be fun though.

I've been lurking these threads for a while, I dont really have anyone interested in ever playing casual with me, and so I only ever go to friday draft nights at my local store.

I dont have any strong urge to play constructed, and I haven't really come across anyone at my local store playing anything but legacy or basically just whatever goes, so I only ever play in drafts, and put the deck in a box at the end of the night and never use them again.

to get anything decently competitive to play in a constructed format, I'm gunna have to drop at least a hundy right?
why?
is drafting not a more even format for playing?
gib advice pls, some of you apparently spend shitloads on physical cards, should I stick to my $20 drafts a week and leave it at that?
>>
>>46849503
You can make a fairly competitive deck for less than $50. Especially now with the fetchlands rotated, it depends on the meta of your store if it would be worth playing more seriously
>>
>>46849503
You could try to sell some of the rares you've gotten in draft that are worth some money and use that to build your constructed deck.
>>
Stupid question - do creatures with a subtype of zombie x (such as zombie horror) count as zombies for tribal synergies?

I'm trying to find a list of all zombies in standard but none include cards like forgotten creation. Anyway, are there any acceptable 2-drop zombies besides relentless dead or should I just fill space with Asylum Visitors?
>>
>>46849549
>it depends on the meta of your store
Yeah that's what i'm not so sure of.
we're in a smallish city in New Zealand, so the most people I have ever seen in there is only 30-40.
the first time I saw people playing there they had like 300 card decks and 50 life points, and most of the games I've seen outside the drafts seem to be similar weird games that I don't understand.

>>46849638
yeah that's probably what I'm gunna do at some point, I just try to be wary of ending up like the stories I hear of people spending thousands on decks, which I can see myself doing given the chance.
fuck, mind you, 20 a week adds up pretty fast over a year or two now I think about it.

Who is the best seller to use on TCG in australia? I find channel fireballs postage to be way too slow
>>
>>46849863
No, I don't like it since the timing is limited, inferior to Nantuko Husk and other 3 drops.
>>
>>46850011
Husk is only to end of turn though
Null is the same thing, but with a 2 mana cost for 2*1/1 counters

But yeah, the extra mana cost on turn 4 means you can only play either some kind of 2 drop spell or bear, although it becomes a turn 4 4/4 and turn 5 6/6 assuming you have a creature to sac.

I want it to be good, but it's a bit too dependant on other cards to be able to ramp up to live more than a few turns.

Depends on what your clue generator is but yes. 20 lands with a 3 mana curve is fine.
>>
>>46850122
Since the format has so much exile based removal its best to use husk over null since null can only do so at sorcery speeds. Making the card null. Zombies have a lot of powerful cards. I'm just waiting for someone to crack open the box and let it out.

>>46850122
Idk, I feel like that card takes too much investment to actually be worth it at that cost (if it was a 2 drop itd be nice,id run 3) vs husk/fleshbag marauder/graveblade marauder, something im pretty much always gonna get value out of. Getting to block straightaway with Nantuko Husk and buff it as an instant effect - thats gonna happen way more than you're going to end up getting enough counters on this thing (and wasting mana to do so)
>>
>>46850777

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may have target opponent discard a card at random.
Whenever an opponent discards a card, you may put a 1/1 green Elf Warrior creature token onto the battlefield.

How DOES randomly discarding like that work in the physical game?
shuffle hand and draw the top? present to opponent and let them pick one from the back? I can't find any clear answers.

>>
>>46851349
were you correctly guessing what plays your opponent is making, and then responding appropriately with your hand and deck? If yes you need a better deck.
If no you need to play more and watch some pro play. Learn how the meta works and how to properly interact with cards so if the rare opportunity comes up you can maximize your decks abilities.

I'm not ignoring anything, duskwatch recruiter has certain decks he would operate very well in and it happens to not be that deck. Plus duskwatch is prone to being targeted more often than the others because morons like you see his ability as overpowered.

So basically, you use your spells to stay alive early, then use dark petition to grab seasons past. Seasons past gives you all your cards back. The key interaction is that seasons past then goes on the bottom of your library, where you can search for it again with dark petition. To win, you loop seasons past and dark petition to make sure you never run out of cards to kill all of their stuff with while eventually killing them with kalitas, ashaya, or manlands.

>>
I've made a terrible mistake.

I originally got into magic with a group of people that loved edh. I still enjoy the format, but no one at my local shop plays it, and/or wants to spend 10 hours playing a multiplayer game. I'm looking to make a budget standard deck, does anyone have any suggestions? Well, maybe budget is the wrong word, I have a lot of singles but I don't have any play sets of any rares.

Based on a couple of drafts with this current set, I think a blue-green investigate deck could be pretty mean, but I have no idea how to balance multiple copies of a card. I'm trying to do something with erdwal illiuminators cranking out double clues for various things, then using confront the unknown as a cheap pump spell for tireless trackers to do things, but I don't even really know where to start.
>>
Dude I LOVE the deck team pantheon came up with (BG Past Control)
I have nearly 0 cards from standard. I play modern the most.

So here's my question for you all.

I'm an uni student so my gain per month is negative. Budget problem. I can spend money on magic. However...
Why have I to spend 120€ (by magiccardmarket) to play standard at some level? It ROTATES OUT. The deck is useless without the tutor I guess. I hate standard because of this. Help me, how should I get into standard?

>>46862709
build your deck around 2-3 ideal board states. figure out the cards necessary for that state and run 4 of those.
cards that are generally useful but not necessary for your strat should be 3-4 copies.

Clues there are two ways to go - tutor fatties with briarbridge and tamiyo's journal, or mill out with fleeting memories and sphinx's tutelage.

Okay, cool. Give me 20 or so minutes to see if I can throw something together. I was looking at other standard decks and saw someone came up with:

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ug-investigate-2/

I probably could make something like that, I would just need to pick up the yavimaya costs and 3 more journals. Would it be worth it?

>TFW wanted to try that demonic pact deck
>>
>>46862950
>http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ug-investigate-2/
yeah, that is a fairly reliable strat. I would cut down on the daring sleuths - in my clue deck they don't end up doing a lot of work - and sideboard the root outs.

Also I only run 3 journals, since they are legendary you don't want to end up with a bunch of them in your hand. Up to you.
>>
>>46863056
That's what I noticed playing a few drafts. The sleuths seem better than they are. Would it be worth it to go for a more aggro-approach with some skulk, or throw in some hermits of the natterknoll for defense against counters?

Ruling question for you guys, from a new player. And I tried googling it first.

Say I've got an Archangel of Thune (3/4, Flying, Lifelink, "Whenever you gain life, put a 1/1 counter on each creature you control") and I attack. My opponent blocks with a (usually stolen) Seraph of the Sword (3/3, Flying, "Prevent all damage that would be dealt to [this creature]"). Does the Archangel get the healing?

I'm stuck between:
>Damage is dealt, Lifelink activates, Damage is mitigated. Yes.
>Damage is prevented before it ever happens. Lifelink doesn't activate. No.

>>

I always use the Top 8 as guidelines and then just mix up some cards i have to make it a bit less netdecky, ive been thinking on dropping the collected company on LSVs BG Aristocrats ( They are too expensive right now wooping $22) And trying up some Lilianas Indignation's.

With Cryptolith Rites and Scions and Zulaport drains i could maybe get a huge Liliana's Indignation by turn 5 and kill my opponent.

Much better than spending almost $100 on a playset of CoCo's that are in the next set to rotate out.

There's a difference between making multiple changes and blatantly copying top 8. What you're doing is fine

What are the best things to buy for a new player getting into MTG? Are the starter decks any good? Is there a particular set that has a higher volume of staples than the others, or should I just go for the latest release?

I'm coming from the Pokemon TCG where the starter decks are shit and there's only 2 or 3 sets worth buying from.
>>
>>46859981
M15 didn't really have any modern staples. It was great in standard, but once it rotated the prices dropped hard. On the good side, the set has a lot of casual all-stars like yisan waste not and chasm skulker, which are super fun to play even if they aren't competatively viable.

>>
>>46876867

>>
>>46876790
The starter decks are all garbage.
Start with booster draft. It will help you learn the game and familiarize you with the new set. From there you can work your way up to Standard if you get help from people at your LGS
Do not try to invest in constructed off the bat, you'll only bleed money.
>>
>>46876912
yeah, it still doesn't stop your opponent killing it by giving it a stern look.

you play that turn 3-4, your opponent kills it next turn with basically anything 4 and under on the mana curve.
>>
>>46876790
I recently did this.
I got a SOI deck builders kit, it seems alright, filled with dual and basic lands, a set of meh cards to play with your mates or whatever, and 4 boosters. for 25 bucks i think it was worth it as a new player to get lands and chunk of cards you can make 2-3 separate decks out of easily.

since then i'm just drafting every friday. now that modern is removed from PT It might be more affordable to make a constructed deck if the prices goes down.
>>
>>46876965
You really need to reread the card.
>>
>>46876965

Fleshbag Marauder is usually going to sacrifice itself. In effect it's just a sorcery-speed edict. This means it's generally just worse than To the Slaughter, but I'm loathe to suggest tweaking numbers because I don't really want to encourage wasting time on this pile.
>>
>>46876992
>You really need to reread the card.
shit nigga it's even worse than I thought it was.
>>
>>46876946
Booster draft is incredibly difficult for a new player.
Start by playing with friends using their decks against them, and learn the game. Once you understand the basics, you may try drafting.
>>
>>46876984
I second the deck builders kits.

they're the price of one draft, slightly more, and you get all the lands and other cards for free basically, the cost of the pack was the same as the four boosters in it.
>>
>>46876620
Atm, my win conditions are Sanitarium Skeleton recursion (which has been better than expected) coupled with call the Bloodline, or combining Remorseless Punishment or from under the Floorboards with Mirrorpool and Mage-Ring Network. The single Damnable Pact can be useful in a pinch as well. While I'm aware these are generally seen as bad cards, the deck is designed to keep the board clear. I'm about even on mtgo with win /loss and improving.

The two Languish is a budget constraint at the moment, though I'm running 4 in paper along with two ob Nixilis. Feel I should have another condition in the sideboard for Token strategies. Doing alright against them, but need something to replace from under the Floorboards. Been wondering about Erebos's Titan.

I'll take the Grasp of Darkness into account, run those instead. Been thinking about it, thought I'd see what others thought. I have run into problems with manlands on occasion.

>>46876867
Fleshbag Marauder
2b for a 3/1
When it Enters, each player sacrifices a creature.

it's an edict on a stick, fuels delirium, can swing in for 3, and trades a token or Skeleton (who can be recurred) on my side for one of their real cards. This deck isn't built with beating down in mind, but instead making the opponent keep a clear board so they don't beat down.
>>

>Is SOI the set to go for?

my logic was the previous oathwatch set or whatever will rotate out at some point this year, so the more recent one will have a bit more longevity, plus if you are drafting, it will be from that set.

>>
>>46877119
you can make more than two decks from a single deckbuilders toolkit. just to give you both a flavour of it, I dont see the point in buying two honestly you might need 10 or so extra basic lands if you both decide to build the same colours, but that's not an issue, most game stores have basic lands available for people to use while there.

Excess commons are pretty much worthless.

You get less money from selling them than the shipment itself would cost.

Maybe your lgs buys bulk or something, but probably only in the thousands of cards. Either way, I just save mine in a shoebox and give them away to new players etc.
>>
>>46878365
giving them to your LGS is generally a good thing I find, or there are always kids with no money and shit that hang around.
I guess selling a bulk lot would be fairly easy to do too.

the owner at my local store noticed me giving kids some of my spare shit, and sorting new players out with basic lands, every odd FNM draft he throws me a couple boosters, so it all tends to come back around I find.

Is /tg/ supposed to be a hugbox or something? He's not wrong; the deck is making quite a few subpar choices and is almost certainly not going to put up any good results.

Anon who posted the deck: Sorry to be a spoilsport, because while I do think there is a viable (and quite good) version of BR abusing Goblin Dark Dwellers and Kolaghan's Command, your deck is cluttered with a bunch of unplayables (Neonate, Call, Alms, and in the case of a controlling deck, Heir, Visitor). You might not want to hear this, but you'd be better served just netdecking; brewing only works when you know the format like the back of your hand.
>>
>>46881469
I'm not looking for "good job epic deck :^)" I'm looking for actual criticism or suggestions, not just "it's shit." with no explanation why. Like I said I'm pretty new to this too, so I fully expect a deck I made myself to indeed be shit, but I want to learn how to get better. I also hate playing white and green, so a net decked baby company or whatever the meta bullshit is right now isn't something I'd like to do. I'm not looking to win a grand prix, I'd like to get a few wins with a fun deck.
On to your actual suggestions, yeah I really should take those out. I've found I have a bad habit of over valuing one/two drops. I'm going to take those out. I get a pretty good engine going with call and kalitas, putting counters on Kalyta a while getting 1 mana 3 damage burns off, but is it unrealistic to expect that to get me anywhere?
I'm really looking for general deck building tips, as net decking won't teach me shit nor be anywhere near as fun
>>
>>46881668
it's shit, and you're shit. my only tip is that I'd recommend you git gud.
>>
>>46881668
your deck seems to want to go tall with a few creatures which will get big, you probably want to have some stuff that can deal with the decks that will go wide (humans and CoCo) the alms are really only good in a deck that is trying to blitz down opponents life total, that is not your deck. You would be better served to get 4 languishes in there as well as some other removal, your deck seems to have very similar goals and win cons as the Jon Finkel's deck at pr tour, look at the control he is running and consider some of those. A good thing about looking at pro decks is that they will sort of have a consensus of what the good cards are in the format, so look at some of the decks with red and black from pro tour and you can see what cards you should run. Sorry I got a bit rambley there, I do think you should run more lightning axes, probably cut most of your creatures except kalitas for more removal.

TITI has gradually decreased in price for two reasons. first of all it's just a rare, secondly the only reason it was worth so much was because people thought it would be nuts in standard and like every other format too. then they realized that the card is shit and that they're all retards, so the price is going down rapidly.
>getting only $25 for your avacyn
fucking cucked lmao
