What's the coolest set of twin villains you can come up with /tg/?
Mine was a death cleric and a oathbreaker paladin, wielding the Eye and Hand of Vecna.

Right. So impossible to see the aura of invisible creatures or objects, but using an action, one can tell that a creature has an Illusion aura if they are under Disguise Self for example. Which would raise some questions.

Furthermore, an Unseen servant is invisible and unaurable by Detect Magic, but what if it is holding something? Do items that enter the servant's "inventory" go invisible? How about with Mage Hand Legerdemain? Furthermore, Invisibility? What happens with your inventory and things added to your inventory after casting? What if you have a tiny creature in your pocket?

no-one's going to answer every single minute nitpicky "what-if" question you have about each spell.

you've received a plain english explanation of how this spell works at a base level, and now it's up to you to use your brain to figure out the rest. if you have any serious points of contention, then work it out with your DM
>>
I have one group that just finished HotQ, and another that is one chapter into OotA.

Why did WotC make the beginnings of these modules so fucking hard? If I run these again I'm giving the players a free level or two for sure. The curve on these are ridiculous.
>>
Which race would deliver the most pleasurable creampie sex?

I vote drow

>>

Third-time DnD 5e player here, I've decided to make a blade warlock in a party with a monk and rogue, what would be the best/optimal build for me? I have a noble background and am thinking of being a tielfing or variant human.
>>
>>46807971
Why Drow?

I'm gonna have to say Dragonborn. For best experience, race-mix a dragonborn and a gnome, as >>46807980 has a good point.

Anon, that's a kobold.

Would Curse of Strahd be appropriate for a kinda-new DM and a brand new group?
I know they would like the theme and overall tone. But from what I've heard, it's sort of daunting/convoluted.
>>
>>46807924
That's Snorlax, obviously.
>>

>>46808006
I feel like the invisibility questions are worth discussion in the general.
>>
>>46808069
it's certainly not made with newbies in mind, but it's also certainly not impossible to run if you put some effort into preparation
>>
>>46807784
Actually you can negate any spell if they fail their saving throw. Then if it is up to 4th level you can also cast it later.

My only issue with it is that by the time you get that ability, most enemy casters will also be very high level, and could have about +10 to their save. Even if you managed to max your Int, that could still be less than 50% chance of negating the spell.
>>
>>46807862
The answers are simple. Things on your person become invisible. If you cannot see something, you cannot see the outline with detect magic. But you will know something magic is nearby.

As for unseen servants etc, if you see a floating candlestick, you're not gonna need Detect Magic to know some magic shit is going down

Crossbow only if you take Crossbow Expert early, otherwise longbow. Once you get Extra Attack, crossbows suck hard.

Longbow if you want to avoid unnecessary feats, crossbow if you don't mind the required feat in exchange for a minor damage boost and you don't want to drop your bow for melee combat ever.

Does anyone have that webm from Prisma Illya where the brown girl grabs the other girl by the wrists and starts making out with her?

Because that is exactly what my sorceress needs to do to an enemy wizardess in order to shut down her verbal and somatic spellcasting components.

However, the book says that for grappling, I need to make a Strength(Athletics) check and I don't have Athletics- will I still be able to grapple, or no? If not, I'll have to leave it up to the party cleric, he threw down like four guys last game who tried to grapple with him.
>>
>>46809569
You can still make the check, you just won't be able to add your proficiency bonus to the roll.
Weirdo
>>
>>46809569
>I don't have Athletics
athletics represents your ability to run, jump, climb, swim, grapple, etc. is your character stephen hawking? no? then you have athletics

what you don't have is *proficiency* in athletics, which means you'll be worse at those aforementioned tasks than someone who does have proficiency, because they get to add their proficiency bonus to any checks related to the skill

everyone has every skill. by your flawed understanding, if i didn't have perception proficiency, then my character would be completely unable to see, hear, smell, or physically feel anything because "they don't have perception". in reality, i have perception as does every character, but my perception is worse than if i had proficiency. get it?

You also skip the bullshit ghost thingy that can one-shot kill (kill, not incapacitate) literally any first level character. The most HP you can get at first level, barring homebrew shit, is 18 (variant Human Barbarian with rolled 18 Constitution and the Tough feat), which just so happens to be the maximum amount by which the ghost can reduce your maximum HP, which instantly kills you if it hits 0.

It's even worse if you're playing a Mariner style character that wants to show off your climb speed by going in through the third floor balcony window instead of the front door. I really should have learned that lesson back in Scales of War when I triggered three encounters at once... "No, guys, they'll never expect us to come from above!"

Though that same tendency ended up saving my life later, when I cowered safely in an alcove and crossbow'd the shambler to death while staying above its maximum reach.

I think I could do another aberration-centered thing, to get a place to put the "protean" class and some homebrew monsters in. Although that would be the point where things would turn really weird, with stuff like person-mimics, parasite-mages and porting the Drakainia from PF to 5th edition.

5e newbie question. When making a character, are my starting skills just the set number of class skills and skills from the background?
At the moment I have four skills and that doesn't seem right...
>>
>>46810200
Those are the skills you have proficiency in. Four is normal.
>>
>>46810214
>Four is normal.

>>
>>46810200

Up to two skills from background
>>
>>46810232

>>
>>46810229
Just to clarify, four is normal for a lot of class/background combos. As >>46810232 pointed out, there is variation.
>>
I just found out about the oathbreaker variant paladin and I desperately want to play one to fulfill my WoW DK fantasies and my DM won't allow it. He's holding firm to the evil alignment requirement. I want to be a good guy, stuck with bad guy powers, using them for good. He's not hearing it.

I've never been bummed by alignment shit before. Or felt so restricted by a DM really. I'm gonna talk to him again but he's pretty stubborn sometimes.
>>
>>46810229
Don't forget, you are allowed to use all of those skills! There's just four you are better at.
>>
>>46810269
The fluff of an oathbreaker is really made for killing innocents and such, using dark powers for good doesn't fit it well. You're better off finding or making a custom oath if you can't just settle for vengeance.
>>
>>46810273
>you are allowed to use all of those skills!
Even specialist skills like Arcane?
>"Kronk know that spell. Kronk read it in a book."
>>
>>46810314
Depending on the situation, yes. Though for things like Arcana and Religion my DM will sometimes just have those proficient in the skill make the roll. YMMV
>>
>>46810172
You're in a situation where a poorly balanced thing isn't being exploited. It's fine for that game, but it's still not a good rule.
>>
>>46810300
What would you recommend anon? In WoW, Death Knights are cursed warriors pressed into service by the Lich King, and endowed with necrotic plague powers and powerful weapon strikes (amongst other things). They wear plate armor and wield 2H weapons and smash shit and infect foes with damage-over-time diseases and empower undead minions. I want to do those things in my first love, tabletop, and right now all I've got is a 5e group.

I'm not super familiar with the system like I was a decade ago with 3.5e, so I guess I don't really know how to get from point A to point B here.
>>
>>46810314
Kronk might have heard the medicine man say something once to some egghead scholar who passed through. Or something. Point is knowledge gets around and otherwise uneducated hearsay is a perfectly valid source of information.
>>
>>46810314
Arcana is just knowledge of magic, which isn't an inherently "specialist" thing in the sense that the average person would know nothing about it.

It'd be like a real-life knowledge of chemistry, say. The average modern-day Kronk would still have a cursory understanding of chemistry from highschool, pop culture, experience, and osmosis through people that know more than him. But he'd be beat out by someone who's more academically gifted than him (represented by higher INT), or has actually studied chemistry in college (represented by proficiency bonus)
>>
>>46810314
And besides... all skills are specialist skills. That's kinda the point.
>>
>>46810349
I don't have a good memory of what custom stuff is any good, sorry. I'm sure a number of dark knight things are floating around, though they're likely more final fantasy than death knight.
>>
>>46810391
So it's likely gonna require homebrew or something to achieve?
>>
>>46810378
I'd say some uses of the skills would indeed be too specialized, and rather than having a high DC that they could get lucky on it'd better to just not allow a roll.
>>
>>46810396
Seems like. What specifically do you want it to do, maybe I can toss something together here with you.
>>
>>46810418
No can do, but I really appreciate the offer anon. We're on a no-homebrew diet, which is why the DM originally said no to the alignment swap for oathbreaker.

5e general threads are so helpful though, damn

Just play paladin. Oathbreaker or Vengeance.

There is like literally one spell that gives diseases in the PHB though and its level 5, so you wouldn't get it until like level 17. Its not on your list, but you could ask your DM for it if you make it that far.
>>
>>46810448
Hey now, we have our moments.

...But generally, yeah.
>>
>>46810462
Yeah just do vengeance. Even if the powers aren't that dark you can be gritty as all get out.
>>
>>46810349
>>46810429
you could start with 1 level in fighter for heavy armor proficiency and GWF, then go all into bladelock.

make your pact weapon any 2H weapon you want. take poison spray (not that great a cantrip, but fits thematically), as well as hex for 1d6 necrotic damage on each swing you make (you'll probably want to pick up war caster to sustain this), eventually taking the lifedrinker invocation for CHA mod (ideally 5) necrotic damage on each swing. other thematically suitable invocations might be devil's sight, fiendish vigor, whispers of the grave. thirsting blade is mandatory

not sure which patron you'd want, none of them really speak "plague", "disease", or "lich king" to me. maybe GOO, i don't know
>>
>>46810349
I've been kind of thinking of converting some Warcraft stuff to 5th edition, since I do like the setting (before they messed it up with terirble writing in later WoW expansions). Death Knigth as a concept is generic enough that it could be used in non-Warcraft setting as well, so I might do that (redoing all existing classes to specifically represent the WC versions is something I'd rather not do unless I was going to make a full Warcraft RPG, and I'm not that crazy/bored yet; besides, I think somebody is already doing that with 4th edition).
>>
>>46810526
>brb, writing Lich King patron

Well, there is the Undying patron from Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide (not to be confused with the similarly named Undying Light patron from UA), which is about undead and stuff.
>>
>>46810448
But look at all these posts!

>>46810462
Yeah, I may have to settle for Vengeance at the moment since Oathbreaker is out. Although....

>>46810526
... This is cool as hell, thanks! It's crazy enough to work! I might give this a shot and fall back to Vengeance if possible. Maybe I can convince the DM to refluff Vengeance despite his stubbornness.

>>46810548
Yeah, it's a mess of a story now but there's some really great stuff thematically. I like the idea of DKs, profane warriors forced to serve darkness and then, with their master vanquished, freed onto an unwelcoming world and left to their own devices, using their evil gifts for good to redeem themselves and reclaim their own stolen legacies... That's cool as fuck to me.
>>
>>46810636
It gets even better when you start as a Paladin and take polearm mastery as early As possible.
Hex + melee attack + greenflame blade + polearm mastery + Smite
Is huuuuge damage.

>>
>>46810799
Do polearm master and those cantrips work together?
>>
>>46810841
Actually, no I don't think they do. Polearm Master requires you to take the attack action, but in this case you're casting a spell as your action.
>>
>>46810841
Nope!
>>
>>46810871
But the spell requires you to make a melee attack, so you Need to specifcaly take the attack Action?
>>
>>46810886
Yep!
>>
>>46810886
Precisely. See the Sage Advice Compendium page 10 for a detailed explanation.
>>
>>46810886
To cast the cantrips you need to Cast a Spell as an action. As a part of the spell cast, you use a melee attack.

For example if an Eldritch Knight casts Greenflame Blade, he can't use his Extra Attack features because he didn't use the Attack action, he cast a spell (ignoring their specific class abilities for now)

>>46810918
Start as Paladin. Take one level in Fiendlock, take Paladin to 5, then work on the rest.
Make it simple, use a Great sword/axe which I think is what most DKs generally use. Take Oath of Vengeance.

By 6 you have your main Paladin features; Fighting Style, consider Defence if you intend to go more heavy in Warlock later, Smiting, some spells, Channel Divinity, Extra Attack. Plus you have a ranged weapon (Eldritch Blast) and access to either Command (Force your targets to approach you) or Burning Hands or what have you.

After that you can fill in your Warlock to get your magic sword or some ritual casting and edgy devil eyes or whatever invocations and take it from there.

>>
>>46811216
rogue*
>>
>>46811216
Because Rangers are sneaky, knowledgeable, hit from range or move fluidly through melee, and so forth.

Sneak attack, stealth, expertise, cunning action, finesse weapons, etc, all suit a Ranger. Heavy armor beat-sticking doesn't.
>>
>>46811249
Fighting Styles, extra attack, dex fighter with some rogue/druid features makes more sense to me than rogue with nature stuff.
>>
>>46811249
Kinda. But they're also meant to be survivalists and fighters in their own right (See their recent attempts at change with a Barbarian hit die as well as 'protecting muh lands')

They also started life as what was basically a Commando Fighter, heavy armour and all.

Fighter subclass would actually suit pretty well, since it means they still get access to their choice of fighting style (TWF, GWF or Archery) better HD etc. Then the subclass can focus on ambushing, tracking and survival.

I'd still prefer them to be their own class, but Fighter subclass works too.

I feel you'd need to throw in an animal companion, even if it was limited to entirely non-combat options, or people would bitch, so i'd go with some sort of size and cr limited feature at 3, making it clear that its for scouting and/or detection, not combat.

Posted a few threads back. I've had a go at ironing out some of the kinks in the class. It's not actually a bad class, but it is suboptimal compared to other options. It requires either the group to be mostly roleplayers rather than rollplayers, or the ranger player to be a better tactician and optimiser than the others.

So what I thought I'd do was have a go at touching it up to see if I could bring it more in line with the other classes.
>>
>>46811481
It's about as poor a multiclass as you can get. That said, it's playable.

But death knights are already a thing. They're in the 5e monster manual. They were a thing in D&D before they were a thing in Warcraft. They're just the fighter version of a lich.
>>
>>46811196
Well, they originate with D&D, but they've never been handled satisfactorily, except imo in 4e, which is the only time they had really nice mechanics that jive with their concept. They also had a lengthly 'ecology' type article written for them.
>>
>>46811481
Why did people generally learn their lesson about making retarded, non synergistic multiclasses in 3e (after a VERY long time), then by the time 5e rolled around everyone forgot their lesson?

Well, you can use a trident, but it has the same stats as a glaive/halberd/polearm, so go with one of those.

Gods typically have magical powers, so some sort of caster or half caster? (I like blade pact warlock, and you could fluff your patron as a GOO Titan that you stole power from)

Get the polearm master and sentinel feats, and if your DM lets you, the tunnel fighter.

My group is thinking of making a party of six clerics, each of us taking one of the domains from the PHB.

Good party? Or best party?
>>
>>46812180
Second best.

All warlock party is the best, especially with a DM and group that can handle party intrigue.
>>
>>46812180
I like this idea a lot. I've thought of having a party of all Paladins using the different Oaths (sans Oathbreaker) and doing a Diablo style game, or a party of all Wizards using different Arcane Traditions (and going one step further and limited the spells they can know to their school + 1 other school) and doing a Harry Potter game.

I want my BBEG to be a skeleton.

However, I've already established him as being a nobleman working from the shadows.

How can I change course without making him a joke character?

I guess I could always have the noble be an underling serving the "real" BBEG who is a powerful, immortal skellington.
>>
>>46812609
I don't see a problem. The nobleman has a skeleton, right?

It's simply wearing the flesh as a suit so as to blend in. Classic skeleton tactic.
>>
>>46812609
Skeleton uses illusions to appear as nobleman.

And yeah, a guy turning into a walking, talking, spell casting skeleton would be pretty horrifying.

>Suspects nobleman is up to no good because of shady dealings
>Party investigates dealings, expects corrupt noble
>Stumbles across old adventurer who thought said noble was dead
>Party follows a trail to some ancient standing stones or what have you
>Discover nobleman was a necromancer...and they also find his skeleton, they know its his because of the gold-tooth or old war wound or whatever
>Other leads include following a trail to said asylum where they can interrogate one of his political prisoners, servants who find it odd how distant he is, never lets anyone touch him etc. Someone who knows noble had an interest in the dark arts many years ago
>End up confronting noble
>Illusion slowly dissipates, reveals sallow scraps of skin hanging loosely from bones
>Bones of an ancient necromancer who killed the noble and took his place when he was raised
>Starts hurling spells at the party

Or you could just have him burst out of a cake with party poppers and a big red nose and honking a horn if you wanted to be lazy.

Lich with False Life is a pretty common thing.

In settings where social shit is a thing, civilization is more than a quick trip to the Waterdeep Magicomart, and people actually do have to care about social niceties, even the lich who wants to do more than be a recluse in a tower is going to have to fake it.

I'm having trouble coming up with a flaw for my character and I was hoping to have some input.

He's a feral tiefling that was abandoned as an infant at the house of helm an orphanage/temple. Raised by a moon elf priest, he feels a deep connection to helm, being the god of protection and attributes his wellbeing to helm, since, most people are afraid of tieflings yet the church pretected him.

Generally, he tries to lead by example and defend those that can not do so themselves. It is important to him to prove he is 'good'.

I really hate the acolyte flaws in the book and I find it hard. Thanks for any and all help on making flaws in general.
>>
>>46813059
I'd play the angle that, because he was shown uncommon compassion as a child, he's entirely unprepared for the fear and suspicion he'll be subjected to in the outside world.

How about he worries more about what other people might think than actions themselves sometimes?

Like hypothetically. Party knows the baron is evil but can't prove it and want to sneak in to find evidence. Tiefling doesn't want to because what would the villagers think of us if they found out?!
>>
>>46813118
It's called a zero day. You use it to introduce your players to the setting and each-other, as well as to establish any house rules. And if you want your campaign to have any semblance of order you HAVE to have it.
>>
>>46813187
I might throw them setting material as well if the background really, really clashes but for the most part it seems generic enough.

One player asked for something like Tiefling which I'm iffy about (they're mainly choosing races on RP and looks than mechanics), but even in Ravenloft I can probably either make it work or tweak with the race lore a little.

I know. I was just talking with one of my friends about our ability to heal (I'm a Paladin, he's a Druid), and I made the point that while he can potentially heal more times than I can, I can heal for far more damage than he could ever hope to, considering Lay on Hands and Aura of Vitality.

I'm not playing Devotion, but none of the class features seem to have anything to do with healing.

>>
>>46814171
Not really. It's still a warlock, and Eldritch blast easily outperforms any pact weapon.

They said, a lot of complaints about Bladelock's effectiveness miss or ignore the fact that the Pact Boon feature is a one-off feature, not a class archetype. The real draw of PoB is having a magic weapon that you're automatically proficient with that can't be taken from you.

That hasn't stopped spellblade spergs, though.
>>
>>46814092
Which lets you stick one dude and has no effect on ranged attackers.
>>
>>46814217
Yes, but that should be obvious.
>>
>>46814171
Kinda. It doesn't work that way without some real work though.

In reality it gives them a bit more options up close than your average caster, but it's not somewhere they should be hanging out for long.
>>
>>46814266
Just wondering if using wis as a dump stay was a good idea for a warlock, I know the primaries are great
>>
>>46814233
Pretty much this. The Pact is a utility choice, not an archetype. Tome lets you break out of the warlock spell list a bit, chain lets you get more out of familiars, and blade gives you any melee weapon as a backup. There's a few invocations that build on them later on - book of ancient secrets gives you ritual casting, voice of the chain master gets you telepresence, thirsting blade gives you an extra melee attack with your pact weapon.

But at the core, whatever pact you pick, you're still a warlock. They're a d8 arcane caster that forgoes wizard utility or sorcerer flexibility for better abjuration/evocation stuff and eldritch blast.
>>
>>46814240
Sticking one dude is still pretty useful for how 5e combat goes though.

The main issue is probably get nailed by AoE blasts. Especially with a dex that low.
>>
>>46814426
Sure.

You can make anything work with warlock, it's the most versatile class.
>>
>>46814438
>>46814233
The problem with blade pact is that it doesn't actually open up new gameplay as the other pacts do. You're always better off simply using eldritch blast instead.
>>
>>46812701
>grave matter
>>
>>46814478
It gives you the option of sticking someone with a Greatsword if they get close, since Eldritch Blast would be fired with disadvantage or you have to Disengage.

On the other hand, you could just take Tome and grab Shillelagh.
>>
>>46814443
True. Still, as a Wizard I'd always prepare at least Mirror Image if I was dedicated to being a hipster and not taking Mage Armour.
>>
>>46814478
Thirsting Blade is pretty tasty though family
>>
>>46814519
I'm glad someone noticed
>>
>>46814526
And pact of the chain let's you cancel the disadvantage with help from your familiar.

So either of the other pacts let you perform as well on melee range. And there is the issue that melee combat isn't particularly new anyways.

There have been a lot of fixes to Bladelock proposed. My idea is simple: make it a bonus action to switch pact weapons, add a magic damage bonus that scales, and add in more weapon type master feats that offer new gameplay, like polearm master+sentinel.
>>
>>46814478
For Blade Pact, imo, giving them a War Magic invocation is an improvement.

I've also considered limiting the DMG Combat options to classes with Extra Attack and Rogues, but I'm not sure it's that big a boost for Thirsting Blade.
>>
My character for CoS is gonna have a pact with a great old one. Any interesting names for a GOO? I don't want to use anything that's from an actual character, but I'm having a hard time coming up with anything.
>>
>>46814636
The problem is upping your damage still leaves you squishy, and even if your eldritch blast were weaker than using weapons it's still a better option 90 percent of the time. Blade pact coming with medium armor and shield proficiencies would probably be wise. Anything else can be new invocations.

I'm mostly content with my tweaks to make guns more crossbow-like (like no retardedly short ranges, they get the same as Light and Heavy respectively). Pistol is bumped to the simple category.

Except I'm trying to think of a replacement for Hand Crossbow and it just reinforces how retarded a weapon it is. So instead I'm thinking of doing this for the exotic martial ranged

>Grenade-launcher, 75gp, Martial Ranged; 1d6 Bludgeoning + Special, Ammunition (30/120), Two-handed, Loading
>Special: Everyone with 10 (maybe 20) feet of the target takes 2d6 Fire damage, half on a succesful DC12 Dexterity save.
It's basically that or a Blunderbuss (same range as hand crossbow, just a flat 1d10 like pistol, but triple or quadruple critical as a special bonus due to multiple bullets)

A lot of 4e concepts got watered down in 5e, to suit the system.

It costs a few actions but for your longsword swing and bonus, what heavy hitter wouldn't give up their reaction for guaranteed damage?
