What are the most basic, well commonly known, cookie cutter races, sentient or not, in fantasy in general, /tg/ ?
Orcs, Elves, Dwarves, Water Nymphs/Dryads, and Hobbits. First few are common knowledge why. Nyphms and Dryads are usually temptresses in Gladiator-like movies. Hobbits are basically shit in /tg/ but they're well made in the source material

what about gnomes instead of hobbits ?

Nymphs and dryads are a deep pull, bra. I'd put mermaids above nymphs, and if I asked my mother what a dryad was, she probably wouldn't be able to tell me.
Elves, Dwarves, Faeries, Trolls, and Dragons (if you consider the latter two to be races) are the most common, though. Hobbits, Halflings, and Gnomes are sort of fighting for the same conceptual space, so no single one of them can necessarily be called iconic.
The next most well known are probably Orcs and Ogres. Maybe Satyrs and Centaurs as well.

Oh, and goblins.
Kitsune or Catgirl races are fairly common.
That doesn't mean the whole setting isn't automatically shit once they're mentioned, but they're still fairly common.

If it's about being iconic, there's no way trolls fit in there. There's really no common conception of what a troll is at all, except probably monstrous.

this is strangely less disturbing than the original

Things that appear in regular fairy tales are probably well known, so goblins, giants dwarves
