Gaunt and Cain are really very similar, but Gaunt seems to take everything far more seriously than it deserves. Cain kind of understands the outrageous nature of his ventures and is very self-aware of the lie built up around him. I've enjoyed both series but have to give it to Cain for feeling more down to earth.

Love him or hate him, you can't deny that Kaldor Draigo is probably the most powerful non-primarch, non Emperor human to ever live, being able to constantly survive in the warp with nothing but his willpower.
Yeah sure he's a Mary Sue, but that doesn't mean his deeds aren't canon, and if a hero is measured by his heroic acts I think he wins.

Well, he appears in the material universe during daemonic incursions then is dragged back with the daemons when the link between realspace and warpspace is broken. It also ties in with a major point of his fluff, that he's ultimately powerless; he takes the fight to Chaos in its own realm but his victories don't actually matter, since all the daemons he kills simply reform, none the worse for wear (albeit probably a bit embarrassed). His efforts only really mean anything on the occasions when he pops out of the warp and helps send the daemons he came with back to hell, before he himself goes to rejoin them.

I've heard a theory that Cain is actually in a bizarre way more pious than most Commissars (most being the key word here), for he truly believes that the Emperor has bigger things to concern Himself with than Cain's own immediate welfare.
He seems to really think that the Emperor is dealing with problems that make even the situations Cain finds himself in look like nothing at all, and to cravenly hope and trust entirely to the Emperor would be pretty much wasting his time.
This belief means that Cain looks more to himself, his comrades at arms and his environment to succeed and not just blind faith. He believe in the Emperor, of course, and does pray to Him, but also upholds the idea of God(Emperor) helps those who help themselves.
The greatest hero of the Imperium was Malcador for holding the Golden Throne while the Emperor went off after Horus btw

It's definitely a fact that Cain's nature makes him among the greatest Commissars in the Imperium.
Commissars are primarily Advisory, Political and Morale officers, and Cain excels in all those areas.
The fact that he does it because he's aware that better soldiers make better human shields (or so he claims) doesn't matter.
